Letter: Red tailed hawk family

     Editor, The Friday Flyer:
We were very pleased to see in Ken Cable’s article “Spring in Canyon Lake”(The Friday Flyer, May 5) that Homer and Henrietta Hawk were mentioned. We have enjoyed watching them and their offspring for the past five years. Bert Barbay took pictures of the chicks in April (The Friday Flyer, April 21.)
We have named the chicks every year since spotting Homer and Henrietta and we felt this year should be no different.
Therefore, continuing with the aviation theme, this year’s brood has been christened: Neil (Armstrong) and Michael (Collins) of Apollo 11 fame. The other two are Jan (Davis) and Mark (Lee) after the first married couple in space. The chicks are now changing color and “getting their wings.” As we have said previously, they must be taught to fly by Henrietta. Apparently, they are not born “flight worthy.”
There are so many interesting birds, animals, etc. in Canyon Lake. We want to thank The Friday Flyer, Ken and Bert for bringing the “other residents” of our Bit of Paradise to us. We will do our part by continuing to christen the chicks each year – a family tradition.
     John and Joanna Spiller
