After previous attempts to take pictures of fireworks were unsuccessful, Josh researched the subject last year and, using his SLR digital camera and a tripod, was able to capture this sparkling shot, chosen for the cover of the 2007 Residential Directory. Below, this photo of a play from the Yukaipa/Vista Murrieta playoff game garnered Josh Owens an honorable mention in a national photo contest sponsored by Canon and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

New Directory cover bursts with fireworks

There is an art to taking pictures of fireworks and Josh Owens mastered it well enough that his photo of last summer’s 4th of July fireworks was chosen to grace the cover of the 2007 Residential Directory.
The Friday Flyer has been fortunate to be the recipient of numerous photographic jewels since the Photo of the Week feature began in 2004. Memorable pictures of sunsets, rainbows, lake activities and more have been the subject of the Directory’s front cover over the years, but this is the first time the editor has chosen a picture of Canyon Lake’s fireworks display.
A 1998 graduate of Murrieta Valley High School, and 2004 graduate of Cal State San Marcos, Josh shares a passion for photography with his father, Butch Owens, who was the first principal of Vista Murrieta High School. Over the past few years, Josh has been perfecting his action photography skills while attending football games at Vista Murrieta and taking team pictures of the 2006 Southwestern League champions.
On December 20, a story appeared in The Californian about one of his action photos being chosen as a finalist in a national photo contest offered by camera-maker Canon and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The contest was entitled “Why Do You Love Football?” The winning photographer was to be offered four tickets to the Super Bowl.
Josh learned this week he wouldn’t be going to the Super Bowl, but his photo did receive Honorable Mention. He says it was an honor even to be selected as a finalist since judges included photographers from Sports Illustrated and the Associated Press, as well as the Cleveland Browns’ team photographer.
As if to make up for the news his football photo didn’t win top honors, he learned the same week that at least his fireworks photo earned top honors by being chosen for the Canyon Lake Residential Directory cover. Still no Super Bowl tickets, though.
Josh moved to Canyon Lake in 2002 after investing in a home here with other family members. He is single and lives with his sister, Erin Bunch. His parents also have property here, and he has been in town many times for the 4th of July. He has attempted to take pictures of the fireworks in the past; but after doing some research and learning how to use his digital SLR camera and tripod, this year’s attempts provided the results he sought.
Josh, his dad and his uncle, Lawrence DePorto of Corona, are currently building a photo studio at the La Cresta home of Josh’s parents; Josh and Lawrence are working together to build a business called Dual Exposure Photography (www.dualexposure.com) specializing in wedding and sports photography.
The two specialties may seem mutually exclusive, but Josh proves that a good action photographer can capture some of a wedding’s most memorable moments, as seen in the portfolio on his website. In the meantime, while making the transition from hobby to career, perhaps even to become a photography teacher, he works full time as a supervisor at Best Buy at the new Corona Crossings.
