Add this emergency number to cell phones Canyon Lakers using cell phones now have a direct line to Riverside County’s 9-1-1 emergency dispatch. In an article that appeared in last week’s The Friday Flyer, residents were reminded that calls to 9-1-1 are routed differently depending on whether they are called in via a landline phone or cellular phone. Landline calls go directly to the Riverside County 9-1-1 dispatch, where operators can pinpoint the location of the caller, making response time much quicker. Cellular calls, however, first go to the San Diego or San Bernardino County California Highway Patrol dispatch before being routed to Riverside County – and then only after the dispatch operator is made aware that the call is coming from a Riverside County jurisdiction. According to the Canyon Lake Police Department, residents can now dial a direct, seven-digit number on their cell phones that will put them through to Riverside County’s emergency dispatch center. The number, according to Sgt. Todd Kelly, can only be used to report emergency incidents within Canyon Lake, and residents are advised to continue to utilize 9-1-1 when outside the community. The number is 951-776-1078; emergency calls via landline phones should still be made to 9-1-1. Cpl. Chad Loeffler, CLPD, recommends residents save the number in their cell phone speed dial listing for quick access during an emergency. “Precious moments can be lost while calls are routed from San Diego or San Bernardino’s CHP dispatch centers to Riverside,” said the Corporal, adding that response times can now be much quicker if residents utilize this method to report emergencies using their cell phones. |
