Talk of redevelopment spurs strong reactions
Redevelopment. It’s a term that engenders strong opinion on both sides of the issue, just as it did last month when the City of Canyon Lake held an informational town hall meeting to discuss its decision to explore redevelopment in the community’s three commercial centers as well as the proposed Goat Hill development.

City Connection: News and Notes

Canyon Lake welcomes new police chief
Much like the community he will be serving, Canyon Lake’s newly named police chief doesn’t fit a standard mold. Certainly, James McElvain rose through the ranks in typical fashion. Joining the Perris Police Department in 1989 following a three-year stint in corrections with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, he started out in patrol, steadily moving up in assignments, first with Perris PD and eventually the Riverside County Sheriff’s Perris station.

Clothes, clothes and more clothes from Macy’s, Robinson May and other clothing companies will be on display during a Valentine-themed fashion show on February 8 as a fundraiser for the Hope Learning Academy.
Titan Thunder Regiment to host fundraiser
Studies have shown that students who participate in music are more likely to succeed in school; however, success has a price. At Temescal Canyon High School, as with most school budgets, there is little to allocate to the music department for extensive instrument repairs, competitions, parade participation, buses, insurance and uniforms – which makes fundraising and community support crucial to the band.
\'Parent Project\' provides classes in parenting
Parenting doesn’t come with a users’ manual, so developing a parenting plan can benefit both parents and their children, according to Chris Suitt of the Menifee Valley Parent Project, which offers a parenting series that begins Wednesday, February 6.
February is a month for loving pets, too!
February is a month when many residents will focus on the people they love and cherish. They also have the chance to do something special with and for their furry friends. Dedicated to promoting the humane care of animals through education and a humane, pro-active animal services program, Animal Friends of the Valleys (AFV) invites residents to participate in the following.

Canyon Lakers awarded at Titan football banquet
Temescal Canyon Varsity Football finished its season with a 6-4 record, coming in 4th place in the Southwestern League. Among their accomplishments, the Titans broke a school record by posting back-to-back shutouts. They also beat Elsinore High in the annual city rivalry, extending the winning streak to five games and maintaining “City Champions” status.
Student aspires to career in politics, journalism
The current president of Temescal Canyon’s Associated Student Body has lofty dreams about what he hopes to achieve as an adult. Nicholas Tousseau, 17, son of Sean and Lisa Tousseau, believes that being involved in the political system is where everything happens. He plans on doing all he can to affect the national political system in a positive and constructive way.
Frivolous fact: this February has five Fridays
For all the trivia lovers out there, this is a significant month for a newspaper called The Friday Flyer because this February will have five Fridays. Not unusual, you say. Oh yes, it is. A February with five Fridays only comes around once every 28 years. The last year was 1980; the next will be 2036. The main reason for the oddity is because this is Leap Year!
Local residents seek donations for animals
An urgent request for donations of supplies for numerous severely neglected cats and dogs, discovered in two homes in another city, was brought to the attention of local resident Mary Dimmler and several other Canyon Lake women who help animal rescue groups.
Business Showcase: Everyone can feel like a star at The Glamour Box
Aaah, the pampered life. Ever wonder what it must be like to be treated like a star? Private shopping sprees in toney boutiques, personalized service at exclusive spas, expert makeup application using only the finest cosmetics. That type of indulgent lifestyle is only available to the rich and famous, right?
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'There Will Be Blood'
Highly nominated by the Academy, “There Will Be Blood” is special, but not necessarily in a good way. There’s not much blood, but plenty of vengeance, greed, religion and oil. Based on Upton Sinclair’s novel, “Oil,” it is technically brilliant and uniquely original. Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance is Oscar-worthy as a turn-of-the-century oil baron, but the film’s primary flaw is a lack of basic entertainment value we demand for $9.
Teen Talk: Keeping up with pets is family chore, responsibility
Recently, Ian and I invested in a pair of puffer fish from Wal-Mart. I’m still not quite sure why we decided to do it, since we weren’t even sure where we would keep them. But I know our motivation. Before we purchased the puffer fish, Ian had read something on the Internet that said you could turn goldfish white if you put them in a dark room for a long period of time – with food, of course.
School Daze: Financial feathers hit the fan
By now, almost everyone in the valley knows some $3.2 million has been trimmed from the local school district’s administrative costs, and an additional $4 to $5 million will have to earmarked for the rest of this year and into the upcoming school year of 2008-09, stretching into 2010 as well.

Longtime resident Charles “Chuck” Raymond Lafferty, 69, passed away from respiratory failure on January 23 at Kaiser Hospital in Riverside.
Letter: Raising dues not the answer
RE: Directors discuss economic challenges (January 18) . . . Hmm, let me see. Times are tough on most people right now, especially business owners and those involved in real estate. We have a shortcoming in POA dues and income and rising costs in fuel and many other necessary costs and, to ‘solve’ the missing dues, we instantly raise dues on those Members in Good Standing to offset the loss?
Letter: Poll tax
As the 2008 Presidential Election draws closer, I have become a political junkie. I watch all of the debates and all the talk shows on politics. It seems with all the media coverage in print, radio, television and Internet you can hardly get away from the election.
Letter: Crime stopper
Just thought you’d like to know our community will be resting a bit better, since, on January 25, my husband, Bill, caught one of the two thieves that have been breaking into our cars for some time now.
