Masquerade

Much like the name of one of the door prize donors, Be Dazzled, attendees at last Friday's Mardi Gras Masquerade Fashion Show at the Lodge were bedazzled by the colorful and larger-than-life decor that surrounded them on all sides. Here, Diane Fuess makes some last minute adjustments on the catwalk in the Holiday Bay Room prior to the doors being opened for the annual Woman's Club event. This photo of the week and many more on Page B-2, were taken by volunteer photographer Bert Barbay, whose wife Kathy was the lucky winner of the grand prize $2,500 travel package from Canyon Lake Travel, after placing just one ticket in the fashion show drawing.

This Week's Official CLPOA News

Councilman faces criminal investigation
After discussing the matter for more than two hours in a special closed session of the Canyon Lake City Council last Friday evening, Council voted 3-2 to remove Councilmember Frank Kessler, who serves as Mayor Pro Tem, from his various committee positions. The move was made following the discovery earlier last week by City staff of possible inappropriate use by Kessler of his City-issued credit card.

Residents react to Goetz Hill presentation at scoping meeting
Based on the comments of many of the more than 50 residents attending the Goetz (Goat) Hill scoping meeting last week, fears of excessive dust, noise from rock crushing activities, health issues and the effect of 300 trucks per day traveling along Railroad Canyon Rd. to remove aggregate were among the chief concerns voiced to Tom Dodson of Tom Dodson and Associates, the firm retained by the City of Canyon Lake to perform the Environmental Impact Report (EIR).

No parking in Continental Cove beginning May 6
As part of the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District’s construction of a new lift station at Indian Beach, repaving of the Continental Cove Condominium driveway and horseshoe-shaped access road to the complex will begin Tuesday, May 6, and will continue through Thursday, May 8, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

City Connection: Reminder - new cell phone laws take effect July 1
Residents are reminded that two new laws regarding the use of wireless phones will go into effect on July 1. The first law prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless phone while operating a motor vehicle; however, motorists 18 and over may use a hands-free device.

City Connection: Multicultural fun
A “fiesta” celebrated throughout the nation’s library system in April, “Dia de Los Ninos/Dia de Los Libros” (Children’s Day/Book Day) emphasized the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Canyon Lake’s kids were not left out of the party, with the Library holding its event on Monday.

City Connection: News and Notes
The date of the May City Council meeting has been changed from Wednesday, May 7, to Wednesday, May 14. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. with the agenda posted the Friday prior to the meeting.

'Bowling for the Brain' event to be held tomorrow
Pumpkins and brains have very little in common unless they get “moldy.” Three small girls, who were Canyon Lake residents at the time, learned about the “Pumpkin Bug” in October 2005. Ten-year-old twins Nicole and Samantha Marshall explain, “It was on Halloween when we learned about pumpkins and our dad. When carving pumpkins we noticed one of them had mold. Our dad said his brain has a mold bug similar to that of the pumpkin and that it needed to be removed.”

Assemblyman Benoit invites community to barbecue
Assemblyman John Benoit will be hosting a barbecue at Holiday Harbor for the residents of Canyon Lake on Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m. The luncheon, which is free to attend, will feature information for parents about child seat safety, child fingerprinting, updates on current legislation and a bounce house for the kids.

Annual Little League golf tourney set for May 10
Canyon Lake Little League will host its annual golf tournament fundraiser on Saturday May 10. The event will be held at Canyon Lake Country Club with 11:30 a.m. registration and a 1p.m. shotgun start.

Theatre group hosts workshop
“Come on down y’all, and have some fun!” says Producer Sue Collins. She is inviting children from the community to “join the wagon train” for the Canyon Lake Community Theatre (CLCT) workshop, which will prepare them for auditions for this summer’s all-kids production of “Westward Whoa!”

Lodge turns into a bit of Bourbon Street!
The comment was heard time and again Friday, “How will anyone ever top this?” as the doors to the Lodge opened and hundreds of women, with a sprinkling of men, converged on the Mardi Gras Masquerade Fashion Show, hosted by the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club.

TCHS Spotlight Players excel at theater festival
Several Temescal Canyon High School students involved in the TCHS Spotlight Players dominated the two-day “Long Beach TheatreFest 2008” at Cal State Long Beach on April 18 and 19, according to their drama teacher and Canyon Lake resident, Tara Miller.

Marathon mom invites others' support for Avon 2-Day
Training for a marathon takes determination and perseverance. The preparation process is time consuming and the race itself is painful. Local resident Maryann Molner, a mother of two, experienced her share of pain the last time she ran a marathon in 2004. The pain paled, however, in comparison to what her friend was going through as she battled breast cancer, which had spread throughout her body and was in her brain.

Invite an exchange student home this summer
Students from various Austrian states are hoping residents of Canyon Lake will open their homes this July and become a short-term host family for 28 days. EF Educational Homestay Programs (EFEHP), a non-profit organization, is currently looking for volunteer host families to open their homes to international students for an academic summer program.

Public invited to workshop on dyslexia, learning differences
Many of us recall the humor of Charlie Brown spelling the word T-E-A-M and asking his baseball team, “What’s that spell?” only to be chagrined to have Lucy yell back, “Meat!” For people who suffer from dyslexia or related learning difficulties that surround reading, there is new hope and new research that is opening a vast new program for training in education circles.

Send in those prom pictures!
It's that time of year to send in favorite prom photos from the local high schools. Digital photos are preferred and can be sent to news@goldingpublications.com. Hard copy photos can be brought into The Friday Flyer office in the Towne Center.

Nutrition and Health: A high fiber diet can provide 'regular' results
My husband and I decided to increase our daily fiber intake. So, for breakfast, he added a bowl of “Tree Bark Crunch” to his diet, and I had a bowl of “Frosted Sawdust” sprinkled with a few twigs. In our attempts to increase our fiber intake, my husband and I began to feel like we were chewing on trees.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Deception'
“Deception” is a far-fetched story of betrayal, treachery and murder on Wall Street. Sure, corporate betrayal and treachery are business as usual, but murder? Add to that an elite sex club involving “A” list celebrities and “C” level (CEO, CFO, etc.) executives and you get an “R” rated erotic thriller that is rather stimulating. (Can we say that?)

Teen Talk: A day at the beach means summer's almost here
Have you ever had that feeling like you’re just meant to be at a certain place at a certain time? It’s where planning, opportunity and elation meet! That was the feeling I had when I stepped out of the car and saw the beach this last Friday.

School Daze: Nothin' like a musical - nothin' in the world
Stealing the famous song lyric from “South Pacific” that goes, “There is nothin’ like a dame – nothin’ in the world,” I submit that there is nothing like a high quality, high school production of Broadway musicals. Right now, all three high schools are offering Canyon Lakers the opportunity to see students at their very best – singing, dancing and performing in three wonderful productions.

In Memoriam: Gerald Jones
Gerald D. Jones, 69, passed away on Friday, April 25, at his home in Canyon Lake after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

In Memoriam: Minori Kato
Longtime resident Minori “Min” Kato, 88, passed away on April 22 because of complications following a recent fall.

Benevolent fund established
Friends of Richard Robert, who passed away on April 22, have started a benevolent fund and will be holding a garage sale today and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 22324 Loch Lomond Dr.

Letter: Grateful for Lighthouse Restaurant
Chef Scott Sebring, his entire staff behind the scenes and Manager Loretta Dudziak did a fabulous job for the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club Fashion Show this past Friday, April 24. The food was delicious and that means the bread, too!

Letter: Goetz Hill meeting
On Wednesday April 23, over 50 Canyon Lake residents attended the scoping meeting on the Goetz Hill Project. It appeared no one was in favor of the project and many people were very upset. Tom Dodson, contracted by the City to do an environment impact report, conducted the meeting and was asked many tough and emotional questions.

Letter: Another satisfied customer
We are regular customers of “our restaurant” at the Lighthouse Restaurant. My husband and I were quite surprised after reading the “Food an embarrassment” letter in last week’s The Friday Flyer addressing the author’s poor experience. We were more surprised that he could write a letter of this magnitude and not have the decency to complain to the management before leaving.

Letter: Front yard storage
I agree with the letter by Mr. Wilson about the POA enforcing the existing rules regarding the parking of large trailers and RV’s in the front of homes. The current rules do not allow this type of permanent storage. The POA should enforce the existing rules. :

Letter: thanks for successful event
On behalf of the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club and as chairman and co-chairman of the Mardi Gras Masquerade Fashion Show, we would like to extend our thanks to the many businesses, members, friends and underwriters too numerous to mention for their generous support.

Letter: Huffing Freon
My husband and I are submitting this in an effort to help get the word out to all parents and residents in our local community. Huffing Freon is the new and latest high for our children. “Freon?" you’re asking – at least that’s what we asked!

Letter: Talented and hardworking
Wow! What a wonderful group of talented, hardworking and giving women we have in this community. As Ways and Means Chair for the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club, I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of the fantastic women (and a few good men, too) who put together the fashion show this year.

Letter: Pull tabs donated
The Canyon Lake Lioness Club would like to say thank you to all who donated aluminum can pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House “Collect-A-Million Day.” The club turned in 86 pounds, which equates to 109,420 tabs.

Letter: Lake level dropping
Notice to all Canyon Lake users: the Lake level is dropping fast due to EVMWD draining five million gallons of water per day. After e-mailing the POA General Manager, who was not aware of anything going on with the Lake other than the usual use by EVMWD, the GM forwarded my e-mail to the Operations Manager, who called EVMWD.

Letter: Vote on fence height
Is it getting time to replace a fence in your yard? Are you looking for more privacy in your yard? You need to vote on the ballot that you received in the mail to raise the fence height to six feet. To build a six-foot fence is more cost effective than a five-foot fence.

Letter: Excellent menu, great food
This is in response to Howard Berkowitz’s letter to the editor in the April 25 The Friday Flyer. My wife and I have dined at the Lodge quite often since Loretta Dudziak took over the management and Scott Sebring has become the chef, and we have not had the same experience Mr. Berkowitz had – quite the opposite!

Letter: More on Goetz Hill
I was at the meeting on Wednesday, April 23, to voice our opinions about the future development of Goetz (aka “Goat”) Hill. Many residents expressed their concerns about the project and asked Tom Dodson (the person contracted to do the Environmental Impact Report) questions about the project.

Letter: Young columnists appreciated
Like many people in Canyon Lake, when I start reading The Friday Flyer, the first place I go is Letters to the Editor. Or at least I used to. Then I started reading Teen Talk, which by the name led me to believe that it was just for teens. However, when I started reading it, I realized it was just the opposite.

Near and Far with the Friday Flyer: Hola, mi familia
Two local families shared a Mexican cruise to Ensenada on Royal Caribbean’s Monarch of the Seas from April 11 to 14.

Pyrotechnic booms may be heard at dusk
Though Treasure Island residents hope they aren’t disturbing anyone else with the noise-making pyrotechnics they are using to frighten away the cormorants in their trees, they want to let residents know these “booms” are likely to take place at dusk, not earlier in the day as the signs posted at the gates to Canyon Lake indicate.

Deadlines near for Fiesta Day participation
For individuals, organizations and businesses who would like to be involved in the Fiesta Day events of May 24, several deadlines are looming.

Evening water aerobics classes begin next week
Pool Manager Valerie Grillo announces a new schedule for water aerobics classes that will include an extra class each morning and the beginning of evening classes starting Monday, May 5.

Work out with others at POA-sponsored classes
The POA is now sponsoring a karate class on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Blue Bird Hall. The class will focus on teaching the basic, intermediate and advanced techniques used in self-defense.

ACCording to the ACC: Improvements
Absolutely no construction can be commenced until an application and plans have been reviewed and stamped approved by the all-volunteer Architectural Control Committee (ACC) in writing. This includes, but is not limited to, concrete, fences, block walls of any sort, patios/covers, lakeside improvements and all new home construction.

Did You Know?: Some park facilities can be reserved
Parks are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the months of April through September. During the fall and winter months, they close earlier. With two exceptions they cannot be reserved and, if you would like a special table or area, you just need to go to the park early to secure your spot.
