Happy Mother's Day!

When Jully Marilla's kids, Amanda and Brianna, 6, and Conner 4, decided to do a tribute to their mom for Mother's Day, they created pictures rather than writing words, as seen in the photo and drawings here. But then, pictures have always been worth 1,000 words. |

Chuck Bishop's 'Prologue to Cityhood': Remembering 'Pinacate' and 'La Laguna'
No history of this area would be complete without mentioning the considerable influence of the Temescal Water Company. Formed in 1887 to supply agricultural water to the citrus growers of Corona, it has conducted a continuing search for water and water rights throughout Riverside County. Corona, at the turn of the century, was called South Riverside, or the Queen Colony.
Notes From the Road Once Taken: Where \'giddyup\' means nothing to an elephant
In far northern Thailand, monsoonal rains contribute their offerings to form the Wing, Wang, Pao and Nan rivers, all of which merge to mingle their waters in the Chao Phraya River that runs past the Royal Orchid Hotel in the capitol city of Bangkok. From the large window in our tiny room, 10 or 12 stories above the river, we could easily monitor the busy water traffic – small boats, large boats, log rafts, sludge and random tree trunks and debris. It did not look inviting for swimming.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: \'Iron Man\'
Bring on the sequel! “Iron Man” is already an ironclad summer blockbuster, and the doors just opened. This high-energy action adventure proves that a red-hot Superhero can prove his mettle even without bright red “cachones.” In this case, Robert Downey Jr. shows that the metal suits him just fine in yet another chapter of the comic book genre.
It's Miller Time: The case of 'Nancy Drew and the Two Super Fans'
I've grown up in a family with books – lots and lots of books. I like history and war books, especially World War II. My sister Tara likes cookbooks and books on travel and theater. My dad likes airplane and art books and my mom has lots of medical and old Sherlock Holmes books. She also has all of her favorite author Mary Higgins Clark's books.

In Memoriam: Harvey Malcolmson
Harvey J. Malcolmson, 92, passed away peacefully at home on April 28.
Letter: Appalled by Council
After reading the articles concerning a Councilman’s possible criminal activities, and the Goetz Hill presentation, along with the letters in The Friday Flyer’s “Letters to the Editor,” I am truly appalled at the current state of our City Council representation.
Letter: Dogs dumped
I would just like to let the person who dumped two dogs outside of the North Gate two weeks ago know there is a witness to this act of animal cruelty and someone who can identify the vehicle you were driving. Your white BMW X5 SUV with Savage dealer plates was seen when you tossed out your dogs along with a loaf of white bread and some bologna.
Letter: Disastrous project
As a citizen of Canyon Lake I believe the Goetz Hill mining project would be disastrous to our community, what with the pollution of the air, which would affect the lives of those citizens who already suffer from breathing problems, and the noise which could create hearing problems.
Letter: Full-scale quarry
I attended the scoping meeting at which Mr. Dodson gave his presentation. There was a scale model on the table and some drawings. These were discussed at the end of the meeting rather than the beginning, which is a bit backwards, I think.
Letter: Remember to vote
Did you vote for the fence height? Looking for more privacy in your yard or are you looking to save money? Right now the cost of a 6-ft. piece of redwood dog-eared fence picket at Lowe’s and Home Depot is $2.79 per 6-ft. board.
Letter: A mother's warning
I wanted to thank Laurie Saumers for her letter to the editor about huffing Freon. As a parent of two boys in Canyon Lake, I appreciate her honesty and forthrightness in addressing this issue. We are a community and it does, indeed, take a "village" sometimes to protect our children.
Letter: Low lake level debacle
In light of last summer’s debacle concerning the low lake level and the myriad problems that ensued, I was amazed to learn that EVMWD is draining five million gallons of water daily from Canyon Lake. Even more troubling is the fact that this information is made available by an ordinary resident of Canyon Lake and the POA appears to be remiss in management or awareness at a very basic level.
Letter: Good-bye cormorants
On behalf of the Treasure Island Home Owners Association and the residents of Treasure Island, I would like offer our gratitude to The Friday Flyer, the staff at POA Operations, especially Sandy Healy and Jose Gomez, who issued us the pyrotechnics, Lorrie Flannigan and Bonnie Boniti for their phone calls, Canyon Lake residents around Treasure Island for putting up with the whistles and bangs at dusk, and Kathleen Oprian at BirdX for the giving us their support in eliminating our cormorant problem.
Letter: Chance to dance
A couple of weeks ago, we joined friends from Canyon Lake for an evening of dining and dancing to the Robert Holts 20-piece orchestra, which performed at the Trevi Entertainment Center in Lake Elsinore. As members of Twirlers, we thought the music was great, with all kinds of dancing pleasure in such close proximity to Canyon Lake.
Letter: Rock-throwing
On Monday, May 5, at approximately 3:30 p.m., my wife noticed school children exiting a school bus at Vacation Dr. and Compass. A young black male was being chased by four white males who were throwing rocks at him. Is this the type of behavior parents instill in their children?
Letter: Toxic waste
This week the contractor for Indian Beach is removing the asphalt from Continental Way (Continental Cove Condos) and dumping it at Indian Beach with the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District’s blessing. That asphalt is many years old and filled with oil from cars and is, for the most part, toxic waste.
Letter: Bosom Buddies
In the early 90’s Canyon Lake residents Carolyn Knight, Linda Johnson, Margaret McCoy and Cathy Zaitz, all breast cancer survivors, came up with a wonderful support group for women battling breast cancer. It was appropriately called “Bosom Buddies.” The name was so perfect – “buddy” is a good friend, which all women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer need.:
