The Friday Flyer apologizes for one-sided reporting
A front page article in the in the May 30, 2008, issue of The Friday Flyer entitled “Citizen group invites residents to learn more about Goetz Hill project” contained inaccuracies, misconceptions and innuendo regarding Sky Blue Investment, Inc.’s intentions for future development of Goetz Hill.
Enjoy \'Art at the Lake\' tomorrow at the Lodge
Residents are invited to a free “Art at the Lake” event featuring the work of local artists tomorrow, June 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge. Guests will enjoy the original paintings and sculptures of such local artists as Ella Weatherford, Joanne Dietz, Christy Bruce, D.J. Wilson, Phyllis Lippen, Joan Fakhoury, Ines Miller and others.
CR&R clean-up day will be held next week
Residents who have an accumulation of e-waste (electronics, computers, etc.), old furniture and appliances will be happy to know that CR&R and the City of Canyon Lake are partnering together to provide an opportunity to conveniently dispose of these bulky items. The collection will take place at Canyon Lake Community Church, 30515 Railroad Canyon Rd., on Saturday, June 14, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
City Connection: Police Blotter
The driver of a Hyundai mini van lost control of the vehicle early Tuesday evening near the Equestrian Center, resulting in a single-car accident late Tuesday afternoon.The incident was reported at approximately 5 p.m. on Longhorn near Dover.
City Connection: On a cell phone? Use this number to reach 9-1-1
Canyon Lakers have a direct line to Riverside County’s 9-1-1 emergency dispatch if calling on their cell phones. Residents have been reminded from time to time through articles in The Friday Flyer that calls to 9-1-1 are routed differently depending on whether they are called in via a landline phone or cellular phone.
City Connection: News and Notes
The date of the June City Council meeting has been changed to Wednesday, June 11. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. with the agenda posted the Friday prior to the meeting.
EVMWD approves budget, encourages conservation
“Use water wisely – It’s a way of life” is the overriding theme for the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District’s budget this year. Even with slowing growth and serious drought conditions, the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District board of directors unanimously approved its budget with only modest rate increases.

Chamber Notes
The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce will meet Wednesday, June 11, for its regular monthly luncheon and will feature state Assembly candidate Brain Nestande as the guest speaker. Members of the Chamber as well as the community are invited to meet the candidate and hear his views on issues important to Canyon Lake and the surrounding communities.
Chamber Golf Tourney set for next week
The 11th annual “Ray Chenette” Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament is set for next Saturday, June 14, at the Canyon Lake Country Club. Named this year for Ray Chenette, the tournament is being hosted by the Chamber and Auto Care USA and is an annual fundraising effort, with the proceeds benefiting the Canyon Lake Jr. Golf Clinic.
Dress up and decorate a table for the dinner-dance
It’s not too late to reserve a table or a seat at a table and join the fun offered by the Fine Arts Guild at its summer dinner-dance concert in the park on Saturday, June 21, at 6 p.m. During the Guild’s annual fundraiser, Holiday Harbor Park becomes an outdoor dining room, with guests bringing their own tableware, libations and dancing shoes.
CLLL closes regular season, welcomes TOC
Families were the center of attention Saturday when Canyon Lake Little League hosted its closing day ceremonies and carnival at Gault Field. Parents and kids mingled on the upper field to play games, eat free sno-cones and cotton candy, climb on bouncers, get free face-painting and tattoos and join their teams under easy-ups for picnics and trophies and listening to the music of Kasey “TC” Crawford and the Threshold Church band.
Lions and Lioness receive special recognition
At the recent convention in Bakersfield the Lions Club was honored to be named the “Top Club in Category B” and “Club of the Year” for the entire district. Lioness Joanna Spiller was presented with a “Certificate of Appreciation” from the international president of Lions International, the highest award a Lioness can received.
Butterfield youth present 'Annie Jr.' at TCHS
Canyon Lakers Ilene Moore and Barbara Egbert once again team up to lead students from Butterfield Magnet School of Performing Arts as they present “Annie Jr.” at Temescal Canyon High School on Thursday and Friday, June 12 and 13, at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 14, at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 15, at 3 p.m.
Resident rescuer is a blessing at Talledega
When the box office hit, “Talladega Nights, The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” starring Will Ferrell, needed a NASCAR emergency response scene, the producer selected real life footage of Canyon Lake resident Scott Cameron’s fire rescue truck. Scott is the crew chief in charge of fire rescue at Talladega Superspeedway.
Host a student, have an international experience
Students from various countries are hoping residents of Canyon Lake will open their homes this July and become a short-term host family for 28 days. EF Educational Homestay Programs (EFEHP), a non-profit organization, is looking for host families to open their homes to international students for an academic summer program. Students and chaperones will arrive July 2 and depart July 29.
Spotlight on Seniors: Chelsea Howard
Chelsea Howard made the daily trek to Linfield Christian School in Temecula for the past 13 years. The senior has attended the private school since kindergarten and was on the honor roll during all four years of high school. In addition to school, Chelsea also devoted much of her time to local activities.

Teen Talk: Berlin leaves teen bedazzled, breathless, broke
Last week I got a once-in-a-teenager’s-lifetime opportunity to visit Berlin, Germany, and it was amazing! I spent some time with family I haven’t seen since our last reunion a year ago. It was just a chance that was too good to think about passing up, so I took full advantage and went for it.
School Daze: Celebrating the successes of public education
Several Canyon Lakers were honored on Tuesday, May 20, by the Riverside County Office of Education for their work in public education. Even though they were not ultimately selected as the top county winners, in the eyes of those of us from the Lake Elsinore Unified School District, these people shine like stars.

An old Victorian home from the late 1800s that has been transformed into a tea parlor and boutique was the setting for the Scarlet O’Hatters Red Hat Society group of Canyon Lake to experience a “Princess High Tea.”

Tara Reynen, an 18-year-old student and resident of Canyon Lake, was voted ASB president of Mount San Jacinto Community College (MSJC) for the coming school year 2008-09.
Announcement: 'Bridging' in San Francisco
Three Canyon Lake Girls Scouts, Amanda Freyre, Mandy Houska and Bailee Vargas, along with six other local Girl Scouts from Troop 1004, recently went to San Francisco to attend a bridging ceremony.
In Memoriam: Theron Dunn
Robert “Theron” Dunn, Jr., 51, passed away on May 13 after complications from surgery on May 9.
In Memoriam: Genise Cortes
Genise Sue Cortes, 38, entered into eternal life on May 28, surrounded by her loving family and a close friend.

The popular and generous Stan and Rose Hanover felt they had to take Margie and me to dinner for a simple DVD I made of Stan’s birthday. Not having been to the Lodge for several years for similar reasons mentioned in a recent Letter to the Editor, we went with great fear and trepidation.

Does anyone care? I have to wonder if any of our residents ask the same question I do when they drive by – is this project widening Railroad Canyon Rd. ever going to be finished? This roadway has been tied up forever and no work has been done for a very long time.

The Canyon Lake Travel Club recently advertised an event to take place in December, six months from now. Within a day of the receiving the newsletter, I sent my check for a reservation. Two weeks later I received my check in the mail with a letter stating the event was full.

On Saturday, May 28, at around 3 a.m. my cat “Gary” was killed by a coyote. This happened right in front of my house on the corner of Gulf Stream Dr. and Channel Way Dr.

I would like to give a big thanks to all the people who came to the Campground Club’s inaugural "Welcome to Summer Luau" at the Campground. We had an estimated 200 people of all ages who were enjoying the music and friends to help raise funds for more future improvements in Canyon Lake’s own campground.

POA salutes Canyon Lake pioneers
The Property Owners Association celebrated Canyon Lake’s 40th anniversary by sponsoring a float in the Fiesta Day Parade for property owners who purchased lots here in 1968, the year the community was founded.
Taco Tuesdays, movies et al mean fun for all
The next Family Movie Night at Holiday Harbor will be on Friday, June 13, featuring “National Treasure 2.” The movie will begin at 8:30 p.m. Families are invited to bring blankets or chairs to sit on the slope overlooking the large screen.
Learn to swim with 'Sponge Bob'
“Oh, barnacles!” Sign-ups are now underway for swimming classes at the Pool, and this year’s theme will be “Sponge Bob Square Pants.” The session times are June 16 to 20, June 23 to 27, July 7 to 11, July 14 to 18, July 21 to 25 and July 28 to August 1.
Reserve 4th of July at Happy Camp
Reservations for the 4th of July will be accepted beginning at 6 a.m. on June 20. For Labor Day, reservations will be accepted beginning at 8 a.m. on August 16.
Street sweeper in town this week
Residents are asked not to park their cars on the street the day the street sweeper, Interstate Sweeping Services, is scheduled to clean. The street sweeper is in the community the second and fourth week of each month, with sweeping taking place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Make exercise a social occasion with POA classes
Chair Volleyball meets Fridays at 9:15 a.m. in the Holiday Bay Room and there is no charge to participate. The group is calling itself the Canyon Lake Lakers. There are two teams that consist of whomever shows up that day. Players remain seated while a beach ball is volleyed over a short net.
Country Club offers new discount
For the first time at the Country Club, Food and Beverage Manager Loretta Dudziak says there will be a 25 percent discount on Friday nights on the second entree of same or lessor value. This special is not valid with any other discount.
Protect Canyon Lake's water from quagga mussels
The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District strongly recommends that boaters be extremely careful when boating on local lakes, particularly after visiting regional recreational waterways, such as Lake Havasu, Lake Mead and the Colorado River, to avoid introducing the quagga mussel into Canyon Lake.
GM's Nuts and Bolts: Calling all homeowners! We want to hear from you!
All Community Forum and regular meetings of the Association Board are open meetings. Residents are encouraged to observe meetings and read approved minutes. Residents who wish to address the Board are always welcome to do so during the homeowner forum conducted at the beginning of each regular business meeting or at anytime during the Community Forum meetings.
