Feathered friends

As busy as the Lake sometimes gets with boaters, fishermen, skiers and swimmers, taking time to enjoy the natural beauty and stillness of the waterfowl that live here is always a treat. This serene scene was captured by Greg Sullivan. |

Farmers' Market opens in Canyon Lake
The Canyon Lake Certified Farmers’ Market debuted on Sunday and, according to organizers, “The day was perfect and the people who came were so enthusiastic and excited about the market.” Shoppers perused a colorful variety of fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers as well as flowers and plants from area growers.
Residents urged to write the PUC
Residents are encouraged to contact the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to request baseline changes in the rates charged by Southern California Edison (SCE). The City of Canyon Lake and other cities in the Western Riverside Council of Governments (WRCOG) recently hired a consultant to review a proposal package submitted by SCE that includes rate reductions as well as an adjustment to the baseline.
County mulls Newport's completion
Since the confirmation last month that the developers of Audie Murphy Ranch have pulled out of the project for financial reasons, Riverside County has been looking into options to finish the realignment of Newport Rd. as well as construction of a bridge over Salt Creek to help alleviate flooding and connect Newport Rd. to Goetz Rd.
City Connection: Sky Blue files proposal, site plan for Goetz Hill
After withdrawing their mass grading permit application in June, Sky Blue Investments, Inc. last week submitted to the City of Canyon Lake a pre-application related to a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for the grading of Goetz Hill. According to City Planner Mario Suarez, the pre-application consists of a project proposal and basic site plan along with a deposit fee. He stresses that it is not a formal application for a CUP.
City Connection: Plans for new animal shelter get the go-ahead
Groundbreaking for the new regional animal shelter could occur as early as November, says City Manager Lori Moss, who attended Monday’s meeting of the Southwest Communities Financing Authority (SCFA) in Murrieta. The board of directors unanimously approved the final shelter plans, authorized and directed execution of a ground lease, approved the bid package and authorized the bidding process to begin as well as authorized issuance of revenue bonds to finance the building of the shelter.
City Connection: For sale vehicle enforcement nets 11 citations
The City of Canyon Lake has officially begun enforcing the recently approved ordinance prohibiting the sale of vehicles in the city’s public lots and on public streets, with City Hall reporting that 11 citiations have been issued as of this date. City code enforcement officers will now cite any vehicle left for sale in the Towne Center and two other public parking lots within city boundaries as well as any public street outside the gates.
City Connection: Supervision of teens, kids, makes for a safer summer
Summer in Canyon Lake would not be complete without the many great community events enjoyed by friends and families. These activities provide a terrific opportunity for our young people to take a break from the summer heat and have fun before the school year begins. This summer, most of our events have gone off without a hitch. However, on some occasions, young people who are unsupervised by their parents at these events, have been seen smoking, drinking alcohol and participating in disrespectful behavior.
City Connection: Build a bug
Canyon Lake kids swarmed the City Multi-purpose Room on Monday for "Create a Bug Day.” The craft project is part of the Canyon Lake Library’s on-going summer reading program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” which runs through August 18. There’s still time for kids from pre-school age through young adult to win prizes for participating in various games or by bringing their reading logs into the Library.
City Connection: Mayor asks residents to water only after dusk
The City of Canyon Lake and Mayor Carl Armbrust would like to remind residents they can save water this summer by only watering after dusk. Watering after the sun is setting helps to prevent evaporation and allow all of the water to seep into the soil for use by plants and grass. In addition, the typical household only needs to water four times a week, 15 minutes a day.
City Connection: News and notes
November’s general election will give Canyon Lakers an opportunity to vote for three members to serve on the City Council. Residents who would like to run for one of the open positions are encouraged to do so. The nomination process will run through next Friday, August 8. The only exception to this is that, if any incumbent whose term is expiring does not file for reelection by this date, the filing period will be extended to 5 p.m. on August 13.
Chamber Notes
The Chamber of Commerce regular monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, August 13, at 11:30 a.m. in the banquet room of Pepe’s Restaurant. Riverside County Tax Assessor Larry Ward will be the guest speaker, providing valuable information for help in understanding this year’s tax bill. Canyon Lake homeowners are invited to attend and have their questions answered.
Residents young and old are invited to Learn-to-Ski Day
Skiers of all ages are welcomed at the Learn-to-Ski Day, sponsored by the Canyon Lake Ski Club. The event will take place Monday, August 11, at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Basic equipment will be furnished by the Ski Club; however, participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment if they have it. There is a $5 per skier charge, which will cover the lesson and mandatory insurance coverage, to be paid on site.
Parents should mark calendars for open houses
With the official opening of school on Wednesday, August 13, parents with children in various schools should be aware of the following open house dates. Even if Canyon Lake residents have no students attending classes, they are welcome to come to open house and get acquainted with the facilities and teaching staff.
Exhibit at Temecula's Merc Gallery will feature work of CL artist Paul Price
Women feeling the oppression of modern society’s standards of beauty have an unlikely advocate in the person of Canyon Lake artist Paul Price. However soft-spoken and gentle he is in demeanor, Paul has a warrior’s heart when it comes to defending the causes he believes in – but he does so with a painter’s brush rather than a sword, and with research, hard work and activism rather than rhetoric.
Boat Haven block party pulls in the neighbors
A group of neighbors living on the cul-de-sac of Boat Haven Dr. gathered on Friday, July 18, to celebrate their newly landscaped center island with a barbecue, games, a video presentation on an outdoor screen and even a battle of Guitar Hero, according to Boat Haven resident Alexis Larsen. The cul-de-sac island features a tree, new gravel and two permanent picnic tables, which residents pitched in to buy and install.
Prepare for the school year by planning ahead
Summer is winding down and school preparation is in full gear for many Canyon Lake families. Public schools officially start in 12 days and there will be many local school activities taking place on and around the start date of August 13. Preparation can be the key for a successful start to the school year. The editor of Organizedhome.com, Cynthia Townley Ewer, suggests creating a central calendar where each family member’s activities and events can be tracked.
Spotlight on Seniors: Trenton Paddock
When colleges review applications from prospective students, most are looking for not only academically excellent students but also well-rounded individuals who will be an asset to their school. Temescal Canyon High School Valedictorian Trenton Paddock applied to 15 colleges and universities and was accepted to every one.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The X-Files: I Want to Believe'
Finally, no super-heroes, no super-villains and no special effects in this much-anticipated sci-fi flick. Unfortunately, there’s also nothing super or special about this second “X-Files” feature. Based on the popular TV show, it established a cult following primarily on originality, provocative storylines and the chemistry between its leading characters, FBI agents Fox “Spooky” Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dr. Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson).
It's Miller Time: Overlooking Father's Day but not Dad's heroics
June was a month of "celebrations" – some poignant and others more joyous. There were the June birthdays, graduations, vacations and, sadly, the loss of a close family friend, a pet and an uncle. Unfortunately, in the middle of all those "remembrances," one of the most important holidays – Father's Day – got shoved aside as we struggled to "celebrate life."
Teen Talk: Paper or plastic? Teen answers, 'Neither!'
An estimated 100,000 marine animals perished last year as a result of litter in our oceans. Our demand for convenience and general lack of concern for our world’s plight are disturbing and destructive. With space in landfills rapidly diminishing and oceans continually being clogged with endless amounts of garbage, it is obvious we need to do something.
In Memoriam: Margene Lockwood Ziff
A resident of Canyon Lake for 22 years, Margene Lockwood Ziff passed away peacefully at her home on Little Creek Dr. following a lengthy illness.
Letter: Hopes rumors aren't true
Say it ain’t so Joe! Two rumors I’m hearing that I hope are not true: That the setback issue that was to go to vote with, I’m guessing, 90-plus percent of the community against it, is now going to committee, because they knew they couldn’t pass it and went back on their word for vote? When will they learn “no” means no! Even my wife was able to teach me that.
Letter: Surface mining operation
I have also studied the Surface Mining and Reclamation act of 1975 and feel that the Goat Hill project should definitely be classified as a surface mining operation. I do not believe it should be exempted per #2714 section (b) as it will require the remove of substantial amounts of soil prior to starting the actual construction work of the project and this soil removal is not only a part of this project, but is essential to the project.
Letter: Lost to future generations
I have been reading about the pros and cons to the Goetz Hill project. But nobody has hit on the real impact here. Let’s face it; this project is going to go through sooner or later. Sky Blue will make the noise factor, dust and traffic a non-issue when the grading begins. The project will be a success and the homes promised and retail center will be beautiful.
Letter: Informed opinions
With regard to two issues, I refer to a recent article in the “Letters to the Editor” section of the July 25 edition: Traffic – Willy Lockman, a long term Canyon Laker and former city engineer for the City of Irwindale (a mining mecca), has certainly voiced an important and experienced opinion with respect to traffic concerns.
Letter: Golden opportunity
Wow! Trader Joe’s, Henry’s or Whole Foods in our community – great! It’s about time. Canyon Hills is building a Stater Bros., which does not help Canyon Lake. I suspect a lot of Canyon Lakers will shop there, which benefits Lake Elsinore. Sales tax revenue generated from our purchases go directly to the City of Lake Elsinore.
Letter: Vision for the future
What if no one ever dreamed? I read with interest Barry Talbot’s comments on the Sky Blue project. He said Sky Blue’s vision was like going to Disneyland, which is full of dreams. When Walt Disney first thought of a Disneyland, how many people do you think thought it was just a dream and would not ever be a reality? What about a community in the middle of nowhere about 40 years ago?

An estimated 185 million gallons of used motor oil is improperly disposed of each year in the United States -- dumped on the ground, tossed in the trash or poured down storm sewers and drains.
