Out to lunch

Mid-afternoon winds blow across the Lake, rippling its calm surface as sunlight glints off the choppy peaks in this unique perspective of Canyon Lake. More unique, though, is the reason for soaring over the community, according to Lisa Monte, who submitted this Photo of the Week. She, along with Pat and Robb Smith had taken wing with Marty Hairabedian in his Beechcraft Bonanza V Tail some months back for what they jokingly referred to as $200 buffalo burgers in Catalina; Lisa snapped this shot as they returned home around 3 p.m. "With gas prices today, that burger probably now costs $250," says Lisa.

At the request of Sky Blue Investments, Inc. the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association Board of Directors will vote at the next Board meeting, scheduled for September 16, whether to remove from the jurisdiction of the POA the approximately 29.73 acres of property owned by Sky Blue known as Goetz Hill. Following is the full text of the letter dated July 30 and sent to the POA Board. The letter is on file at the POA and was provided to The Friday Flyer by General Manager Clint Warrell.

As economy falters, impact is felt in Canyon Lake
The Inland Empire is facing its most challenging economy in over four decades, fundamentally due to the impact the housing market is having on a wide variety of sectors, according to the Inland Empire’s Quarterly Economic Report, published in July by the Western Riverside Council of Governments (WRCOG). And, as if that’s not bad enough, the report also indicates 17,500 people have lost jobs in the Inland Empire.

City Connection: State of the City presented at Chamber mixer
Mayor Carl Armbrust presented his State of the City speech at Wednesday night’s Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce mixer, hosted jointly by the City of Canyon Lake and the POA at the Country Club. Carl’s speech highlighted many of the accomplishments the City made over the past year as well as indicated some of the issues the City will be focusing on over the next several months and into the next year.

City Connection: Residents urged to become involved in CLEPC
Canyon Lake is a community in the truest sense of the word, with residents able to take pride in the active role many take in improving not just the amenities but also the quality of life behind the gates. Clubs, organizations, committees and fundraising efforts boast members and supporters who work tirelessly behind the scene – and on their own time – for the greater good and to ensure no detail is ignored, no demographic is forgotten and those in need of assistance receive it.

City Connection: Guarding against West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus (WNV) is again making the news, with word from the California Department of Public Health that the state’s first confirmed death this year from the disease occurred recently in Orange County. In addition, officials say that the high foreclosure activity has had the unintended effect of creating fertile breeding grounds for mosquitoes, a result of abandoned and neglected swimming pools.

City Connection: Public hearing notice
A public hearing will be held during the course of September's regular City Council meeting, scheduled for next Wednesday, September 3, at 7 p.m. Peter Riley, owner of Sports Stop Bar and Grill, located in the Towne Center, has requested a modification to Conditional Use Permit (CUP) 07-015/CUP Case No. 08-25/MCUP to conditions pertaining to landscape and gross sales of food respectively.

City Connection: Don't miss the Market!
The Canyon Lake Farmers' Market operates every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m in the upper section of the Towne Center parking lot and features fresh produce from local farmers and fresh flowers from area growers as well as handcrafted items and freshly prepared food such as roasted corn, salsa and tamales.

Buy a gourmet picnic basket for evening concert
Music aficionados may now order gourmet picnic baskets for next weekend’s inaugural “Composer Under the Stars” event, featuring the music of Stephen Sondheim and Jason Robert Brown. “Sunset Beach and the Lodge lawn are the perfect setting for an evening of spectacular music, and a beautiful way to close the summer,” says Canyon Lake Community Theatre member Tara Miller

Tickets are now on sale for Western Barbecue
The 5th annual Lioness/Lion Western Barbecue Hoedown will be held Saturday, September 20, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Holiday Harbor. Canyon Lakers, their friends and families are invited to enjoy a dinner of chicken and ribs, coleslaw, barbecued beans, salads and dessert for only a $20 donation. Once again, the Palomino Express will provide the music for dancing and listening.

Time to update Directory listings
The Golding Publications staff is preparing for the 2009 edition of Canyon Lake’s Residential Directory. With new escrows closed every month and, lately, foreclosures, it is an overwhelming task to keep the phone book current each year. Residents are reminded that being listed is not mandatory nor automatic.

Jr. Golf Tournament results are announced
The 2008 Jr. Golf Clinic concluded on August 8 with the annual awards and prize drawing at Holiday Harbor. This year’s event had 193 kids participating in an hour-long clinic each day and, on Friday afternoon, the kids went out on the Golf Course to practice what they learned during the week.

Keep children safe while enjoying the water
Labor Day weekend is upon Canyon Lake, drawing scores of families out to enjoy the Lake or backyard barbecues where the swimming pool is the main attraction to mark the traditional end of the summer season. Danger can lurk in those waters, though. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional or accidental injury-related death for children ages 1 to 4 years old in Riverside County

Looking Back: What happened in August of past years?
In 1973, the three-bedroom home on Lot 66, Tract 3718 was listed for sale at $39,500, complete, furnished or unfurnished. The choice 71-ft. waterfront Lot 17, Tract 3716 with house plans was also available for $15,750 with a “small down and financing available.” Another parcel, Lot 132, Tract 3863 could have been yours for a total price of $7,500, with $500 down and 10 years financing.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Rocker'
The summer blockbuster season is officially over. If it seems your choices in flicks are bad or worse, “The Rocker” could be a pleasant surprise. It’s merely mediocre and only mildly offensive. On a more positive note, this musically themed teen flick is also fairly amusing, thanks mostly to Rainn Wilson (TV’s “The Office”) in his first starring role.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Costa Rice adventure
Jack and Ann Custer recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica – a trip they say was “fabulous.” After landing at the San Jose airport, they continued to Los Suenos Resort, visiting the rustic town of Jaco to shop and sightsee. They also ventured out on a river for a “Jungle Crocodile Safari” and watched the guides feed crocodiles.

Announcement: Wakeboarders head to World Championships
A crew of Canyon Lake wakeboarders recently competed in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for the Air Nautique World Wakeboarding Association (WWA) National Championships. The event was presented by Rockstar Energy Drinks and was held August 7 to 10.

Announcement: Local boys kick off college football season
Two former Temescal Canyon High School football players, Miles Eden, who graduated in 2004, and Nolan Owen, who graduated in 2007, will be starting tomorrow, August 30, as the college football season kicks off. Both are Division 1 football players. Miles will be playing as the starting quarterback for San Jose State against UC Davis and Nolan will be starting as long snapper for Northern Illinois against Minnesota.

Announcement: Young fisherman
Tyler Aspengren, 8, has become quite the fisherman since the Fishing Derby, according to his mom, Trisha Aspengren. “He may have not caught the ‘Big One’ for the Derby, but everyday since he has tried his hardest,” she says, adding that bait has included her garlic chicken and meatloaf.

In Memoriam: Thelma Rice
Former resident Thelma Ivadell Rice, 89, passed away on August 17 at her home in Riverside, with her husband, Chuck, and son, Jeffrey, at her side.

Letter: A note from the Editor
It recently has come to the attention of The Friday Flyer staff that some Letters to the Editor may have been attributed to persons who did not write or agree to the content of the letters. For that reason, all future letters must be signed by the writer. In addition, the tract and lot and a phone number (that won\\\\\\\'t be published) must be included with the letter to verify authenticity.

Letter: Holiday Harbor amphitheater
Friday Night at the Movies at Holiday Harbor is a well-attended (and apparently thoroughly enjoyed) experience, as are several other events staged in the park. A comment by a recent movie-goer stated a flaw in the setting was the steepness of the slope making it sometimes difficult to manage chairs.

Letter: Excellent dinner and service
On behalf of the Emergency Preparedness Committee, I’d like to thank Loretta Dudziak and her banquet room staff for making our committee’s “Support Our Lodge” dinner such an enjoyable evening. The chicken cacciatore, service and Pool View Room arrangement were excellent.

Letter: Consider needs of City
The more I hear about the few who want to “live out their waning years” I cannot help but ask, “When you were up-and-coming, did you embrace growth and progress?” What did you think of the people who protested against progress, even though that progress was a necessity, only because they did not want their circumstances to change?

Letter: Ever-present gripers
What was that about a duck? Well in Canyon Lake, all you need is for the Concerned Citizens to say it’s a duck, then it is. I have never heard such convoluted rhetoric in my life as listening to these same few gripers from the Concerned Citizens group. They seem to show up at every Board meeting, repeating the same tired claims about Sky Blue’s project.

Letter: Financial comparison
Last week’s Treasurer’s Report stated that we had a cash shortfall in 2007, which was funded by the Community Facilities Development Fund. Controller Ron Phipps also stated that declining revenues and bad debt will cause an increase in dues or reduced services. I agree, but he failed to point out the expenditures in 2008 exceeded 2007 by $600,000.

Club News: Car of the Month
When asked why she loves her 1958 Chevy Corvette so much, Anne Landin’s response is, “It’s red, it’s shiny, it’s fast and it’s fun to drive!” According to her husband Joe, the couple purchased the body and chassis in 2003, then spent the next two years working on the frame-off project – locating all the missing parts and completing the interior, bodywork, paint and trim.

In observance of Labor Day, Member Services will be closed Monday, September 1; however, members will be able to call in their guests as usual.
