Statistics paint a picture of Canyon Lake's makeup
Would it interest residents to know that, in the 12-year period between 2000 and 2012, the population group for ages 21 to 34 in Canyon Lake is projected to increase by more than 1,300 people? Or that, in 2007, more than half of the households earned between $50,000 and $100,000? These are just two of the statistics listed in the July 2008 “Profile of Canyon Lake” provided to the City of Canyon Lake by the Southern California Association of Government’s (SCAG) Regional Council.
School buses roll into town Wednesday
Public schools open their doors next Wednesday and that means buses will once again be traveling down community streets. City Connection: Open Council seats draw new faces, incumbents

According to City Clerk Kathy Bennett, five of those 10 have returned completed candidacy paperwork as of the deadline for this edition of The Friday Flyer, the next step towards becoming eligible for a spot on November’s general election ballot.
City Connection: Verizon confirms FiOS project on hold
John Davies, spokesman for Verizon, confirmed last week that the company has decided to suspend its FiOS installation project in Canyon Lake, citing a higher than expected cost for placing lines under the community’s streets. According to Davies, the work was much more difficult than anticipated, mainly because of the rocky substructure beneath the streets.
City Connection: It's been a 'bug-tastic' summer at the Canyon Lake Library
Canyon Lake youngsters had a great time during the Library’s final craft day for the summer reading program, “Catch the reading Bug,” making bug mobiles on Monday. The program is set to end Monday, August 18, so those participating have just a few days left to bring their reading logs into the Library to win prizes; Library Manager Trish Jenkins says that kids can look forward to more fun when the winter reading program kicks off later this year.
County tax assessor to speak at Chamber lunch
Homeowners who have questions about their property tax burden or change in valuation, or who want to find out how to file an appeal if they disagree with the assessment, are urged to attend the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon next Wednesday, August 13, at 11:30 a.m. in the banquet room at Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant, where County Assessor Larry Ward will be the featured speaker.

Families requiring bus passes can take advantage of the Transportation Department’s special Saturday hours tomorrow, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Health officials advising public on rare, water-borne illness that caused recent death
Following a recent death (that did not occur in Canyon Lake), Riverside County health officials are advising residents to consider precautions that might reduce the risk of exposure to a parasite typically acquired while swimming. Naegleria fowleri, an amoeba commonly found in warm freshwater lakes and soil, causes a rare but severe brain infection that usually is fatal.

The Canyon Lake Certified Farmers’ Market is operating every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the upper section of the Towne Center parking lot, and excited residents are turning out for the weekly event, as seen in these photos taken by Bert Barbay during the first two weeks.

Resident with rare diagnosis of breast cancer receives royal surprise from 'Bosom Buddies'
Sometimes in life what can initially seem like a bad thing, can turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Such was the case for Canyon Lake resident Gordon Skidmore when he scratched himself in 2001 while working on the back end of his boat. The scratch just below his right nipple didn’t seem like much to worry about and he figured it would heal on its own.
60 years of marriage travels by quickly
When Jeanne and Bernard “Bud” Montag were looking for a way to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary they chose to travel, something they have enjoyed together since getting married on July 3, 1948, at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Van Nuys, California. A GREAT tutor can make a difference for a child
As the economy rolls into a decline and gas prices increase, organizations looking for volunteers are feeling the pinch. Young readers who struggle with literacy and are part of the Menifee Union School District’s GREAT literacy program, may also feel the pinch if more people don’t volunteer.
Responsible parents play a key role in teen success
Canyon Lake families can establish rituals that will have an impact on helping their teens start off the school year on the path to success. “During middle and high school years, teens’ responsibilities tend to increase,” says educator Mary Huser of the University of Wisconsin. “This is an extremely important time to help your child develop good study habits.”

The Wild Side of Canyon Lake: Looking for a frog? Check your watering can
Deep in the swift flowing rivers of Cameroon and of neighboring Equatorial Guiana in West Africa a monster lurks. It feeds on fish, birds, crustaceans, insects and mammals. Its body is more than a foot long, and with legs stretched out it measures two and one-half feet and weighs seven pounds. This is Conraua goliath, a frog; it is the biggest frog known to science.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor'
Suggestion to Brendan Fraser: “In an action blockbuster, try acting more like Indiana Jones and less like SpoungeBob SquarePants.” A movie packed with loads of fun stuff should be, well just an idea: fun. In this third film of the “Mummy” trilogy, Mr. Fraser may have broken the dreaded curse by putting the final nail in the “Mummy’s” coffin.
Teen Talk: Switching schools isn't the answer
It seems every year we lose more and more kids to other schools in the Canyon Lake and Elsinore Valley area and it seems it’s just because it’s the new thing to do. Our parents may have had a choice or maybe not. My parents went to their local high school, no questions asked! I just don’t see the point in leaving just to follow your friends or because their lunchroom is better than yours.
Announcement: New arrival
Dave and Stacy Dillehay, new residents on Continental Dr., are pleased to announce the arrival of their son, Alexander David Thompson Dillehay, who was born on July 11 at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta. He weighed in at 8 lbs. and measured 19 in. long.

Letter: Kids Fishing Derby
The 22nd annual Kids’ Fishing Derby is scheduled for next Saturday, August 16. The Canyon Lake Bassmasters run this event for the children in the community. Our goal is simple: to provide an event where families can spend time together fishing and having a good time. We provide free hot dogs and drinks for all at the weigh-in, as well as trophies for kids who bring in the largest fish.
Letter: Stop with smoke and mirrors
“You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” (Abraham Lincoln) I am just curious as to how many people in this community actually believe they can pick and choose who is going to lease commercial space.
Letter: Vision for Goetz Hill
Goetz Hill history began over 40 years ago with a group of 12 investors purchasing the property from the Corona Land Co. at a total cost $1,000. Most of the original owners are deceased. We know they had vision, because property taxes and POA dues have been paid continuously all those years to the present time.
Letter: Control own destiny
Hooray for Sky Blue! I think it is great that we may get a new retail shopping center in our great City. I saw the model and it is beautiful. I have been in Canyon Lake for years and I really love this area. This center will provide sales tax revenue for our City. I think it is important that we do everything we can to preserve our City and the independence we enjoy today, plus we get this beautiful new upscale center with some fabulous stores.
Letter: Sky Blue doing it right
Why is growth bad? Hasn’t Canyon Lake benefited from growth in the area? Haven’t we enjoyed a great increase in our home values? Hasn’t our POA prospered with the growth? I believe that all growth is not bad. And in this instance, the proposal to build an upscale shopping center is good news.
Letter: Warmest congratulations
I send my warmest congratulations to the City of Canyon Lake for a job well done. You can see the many positive changes that City Manager Lori Moss has brought to Canyon Lake lately. I have noticed when traveling up Railroad Canyon Rd., west from Lake Elsinore, that the road work is now complete.
Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: A visit with Crazy Horse
Carolyn Knight recently enjoyed a trip to South Dakota with her daughter, Kathy Blakemore, and granddaughters, Hannah Faria and Carlee Blakemore. The family visited Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Monument, Deadwood and Custer State Park, where they were “up close and personal” with hundreds of bison and wild burros.
Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: A visit with presidents
Rod and Rosemarie Thompson remembered to bring The Friday Flyer on their recent vacation to South Dakota, where Rosemarie says one of their favorite places to visit was Mt. Rushmore. Just a little closer and the presidents might have been able to read the paper over their shoulders!
Good to Know
The Friday Flyer staff recognizes that new residents may have questions about information appearing in the newspaper – for example, “Is there a charge to place an announcement or obituary?” or “Where is the City Multi-purpose Room?” etc. This column attempts to answer some of those questions.

Don't park on streets when street sweeping is scheduled
Members and their guests play a part in ensuring streets are clean by not parking on the street for sweep day between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Moving vehicles off a street scheduled for sweeping allows the sweeper to thoroughly clean the street from curb-to-curb.
Keeping quagga mussels out of Canyon Lake
The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District strongly recommends that boaters be extremely careful when boating on local lakes, particularly after visiting regional recreational waterways such as Lake Havasu, Lake Mead and the Colorado River, to avoid introducing the quagga mussel into Canyon Lake.
Enjoy live music with dinner in the Lake
Residents who take advantage of their local dining amenities continue to enjoy live music at the Country Club and Lodge lounge on Friday nights. This week’s entertainment will be provided by “Working Poets.” At the Lodge, the mellow sounds of Michael Britton regularly can be heard on Friday nights, wafting out of the lounge doors and across the patio and pool.
