As the sun settles behind the hills of Tuscany and the clouds capture the last of its orange and gold rays, this solitary boater takes the opportunity to cruise through its reflection, as captured by the lens of Barry Talbot.

This Week's Official CLPOA News

Canyon Lake remains Riverside County's safest city
New FBI crime statistics reveal the success of Canyon Lake’s unwavering commitment to crime prevention and public safety. Consistently ranked as one of Southern California’s safest communities, the City of Canyon Lake has emerged once again as the safest city in Riverside County in 2007, based on recently released FBI Uniform Crime Index, according to Chief James McElvain.

Candidates for City Council respond to questions
With many residents focused on the national election and tonight’s debate between Presidential candidates, there are seven men and one woman in Canyon Lake who hope to have an impact on the future of this community by serving on the City Council.

As crowds grow, so will the Farmer's Market
As certified farmer’s markets go, the Canyon Lake Farmer’s Market is truly unique in the sense that it is much more community oriented – many of the vendors are from Canyon Lake and residents visiting the Towne Center each Sunday morning often run into friends and neighbors while shopping, according to organizer/owner Gale Cunningham.

City Connection: Residents urged to drive carefully near bus stops
It’s back to school time, and we at the Canyon Lake Police Department would like to remind you about some important safety tips to keep our children safe. Throughout our City there are several school bus stops where children gather while waiting to catch their bus.

City Connection Police Blotter: Making emergency calls
At the scene of a recent injury accident in Canyon Lake, bystanders trying to call 911 found the line to be busy. Fortunately, a resident living close by was able to get through on her land-line. The incident demonstrates the importance of having an alternative emergency number programmed into one’s cell phone.

City Connection: News and Notes
Residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of confidential documents and help the Canyon Lake Library at the same time. A document shredding event will be held this Sunday, September 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot in front of City Hall.

Let's all just kiss and make up
With all the controversy surrounding the Goetz Hill project swirling through the community in recent weeks and months, this T-shirt logo looks like it could have been created with this year’s City Council election in mind. But the shirt is 15 years old and was created during another administration for a completely different sort of controversy. Does anyone remember what it was? I

Join a Relay for Life team
Cancer never sleeps – so neither will the people who attend the upcoming Relay for Life, to be held October 11 and 12 at Canyon Lake Middle School. Residents are invited to start their own team or join a local team for the event.

Raising guide dogs is a 'priceless' act of love
Taking a walk down the street is no big deal for most people, but for someone who is blind it can be a major event. Using a white cane with a red tip is helpful and also indicates to others that the person has impaired sight; however, even though a cane is helpful, it has its limitations.

Artists invited to participate in the annual Artists Open Studio Tour
The Art Association is inviting resident artists to exhibit their work at the annual Artists Open Studio Tour. The two-day event is scheduled for Saturday, November 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, November 2, from 12 to 4 p.m.

Looking Back: Remembering Septembers of the past
In 1973, Canyon Lake was five years old, and the Canyon Lake Association of Men (CLAMS) held its “first annual CLAM Bake” at Indian Beach with more than 100 guests and members showing up to take part the fun that included hamburgers, horseshoes, volleyball and swimming. According to Don Martin, chairman of the event, the CLAMS then boasted a membership of 55 men.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Lakeview Terrace'
Ever had a terminally annoying neighbor? Some of the best (or worst) neighborhood stories come from loud and late parties, overgrown brush blocking the view and the ever popular fence fights. Of course this topic is foreign to citizens of Canyon Lake, but if you talk to friends and relatives outside our gates, you might get an idea about this movie.

It's Miller Time: Freedom isn't free and it's not a political ploy
My column is usually about my experiences as a member of the Miller clan and, if you read my column, you know that I also have plenty to write about things that happen around here in "Paradise."

Junior College Journal: Attending junior college a good course of action
Tara Reynen, 18, is a second-year student at Mount San Jacinto College. Over the past six years she has been actively involved in community service, especially within the community of Canyon Lake. She participated in many organizations, including Canyon Lake Community Theatre, the Lighthouse Players and the Canyon Lake Library.

Teen Talk: Learning to drive – an interest that unites teens
Former Teen Reporter Erika Czach, a senior at Lakeside High School, learned being a senior and being heavily involved in high school and community theater groups led to a more intense schedule than she anticipated, so she reluctantly had to give up her quest to be a teen reporter for The Friday Flyer. Fortunately, waiting in the wings was Elsinore High School sophomore Lexie Blohm.

In Memoriam: Rod Fletcher
Rod Fletcher, formerly of Kiwi Realty in the Towne Center, passed away on September 20 at the age of 59.

Letter: Mining operation
Those in favor of the Goat Hill mining project – and I understand there might be a few who actually live here and may even have written their own letters – endeavor to misdirect our attention to their answer for the City’s purported abysmal requisite for increased revenue. The real focus needs to be their clandestine effort to abscond with approximately $100,000,000 worth of our granite.

Letter: Need new management
I was pleased to see so many new faces running for City Council. It is a perfect time to elect new people and start turning Canyon Lake back to being “A Little Bit of Paradise.”

Letter: Sky Blue opportunity
Now that the Sky Blue commercial development issue has been resolved, the three owners have an opportunity to contribute to their own welfare and to the welfare of our community. They have an opportunity to develop property, as does any property owner in Canyon Lake. A large body of rules and regulations closely govern what and how that property may be developed.

Letter: POA dues write-offs
I hear of POA dues write-offs and I wanted to thank the Property Owners Association in advance for next year's increase in property dues. In an overpriced market, banks eventually sell a foreclosed property as the market drops back to a fair value. Now I read that our nationís leaders are proposing a bailout for bad loans that banks had. What a deal.

Letter: Cut out waste
The Treasurer’s Report by Randy Bonner states we are not meeting our budget due to lower income than expected from boat registration, slip leases, Golf Course and the Lighthouse Restaurant being 100 percent over budget. All but the Lighthouse had drastic increases in the yearly fees.

Letter: Great dining experience
This past month, I’ve had the opportunity to have dinner at the Lighthouse Restaurant three times. I must say that, whether with local Canyon Lake friends or out-of-town guests from New York, the food and service were great. No matter what was ordered, it came as requested (rare, medium, etc.) and was delicious.

Letter: Need volunteers at Campground
In cruising through our city, you most probably end up at Happy Camp, where you notice some improvements have taken place – the new mobile home for the manager, the grass area surrounding the new horseshoe pits, fencing at the storage area, relocating the swings and the Marine Patrol office.

Letter: AFV is asset to community
I just wanted to make the community of Canyon Lake aware of a service that Animal Friends of the Valleys provides. Last week we had to make the painful decision to let our beloved family pet of 16 years rest in peace. I wanted his last moments to be at home where he was comfortable.

Photo of the Week: Sunset cruise
As the sun settles behind the hills of Tuscany and the clouds capture the last of its gold and orange rays, this solitary boater takes the opportunity to cruise through its reflection, as captured by the lens of Barry Talbot.

Adopt-a-Pet: Daygo and Tiger
This week’s pets include Daygo, a cute and friendly 1-year-old male puggle, and Tiger, a friendly 1-year-old gray tabby male. To adopt either of these pets, contact Animal Friends of the Valleys at 674-0618 and ask for intake number 25523 for Daygo and 24942 for Tiger.

GM's Nuts and Bolts: Assessments as important as mortgages, taxes
When you sit down to pay your bills each month, do you consider your Association assessment a low priority? If so, think again.

Controller's Report: Association was under budget in August
Below is a brief description on the variances in the budget for the month ending August 31, 2008. The variances described are on the last line of the data set and are labeled “(Over)/Under Budget.” For the purposes of this analysis, this report looks at each area that exceeded a $5,000 and five percent variance in either direction.

Did You Know: Want to teach a skill? Consider a POA class
Did you know that, unlike most cities, the City of Canyon Lake does not have a Parks and Recreation Department? Therefore, in an attempt to better serve members, the POA Activities Office offers many classes for members of all ages.
