Sky Blue Investments' request to remove CC&Rs discussed
In the most recent development in the ongoing saga of Goetz Hill is the request by Sky Blue Investments that the POA Board of Directors give up the Association’s jurisdiction over 29.73 acres of the property. A copy of Sky Blue’s July 30 letter to the Board was printed in the August 29 issue of The Friday Flyer. Directors are scheduled to vote on Sky Blue’s request at the next Board meeting on September 16.

Concerned Citizens speak out on CC&Rs request
In the interest of fairness, The Friday Flyer is printing the major portion of a letter to the POA Board from Concerned Citizens spokesperson Barry Talbot, in which he responds to Sky Blue’s request for the removal of POA CC&Rs from the Goetz Hill property.

Residents invited to 'Sondheim Under the Stars' event tomorrow

City Connection: BLM contractor to conduct brush clearing beginning Monday
Beginning Monday, September 8, a contractor for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will begin clearing brush to the north and west of the community. The work will be performed by hand crews as well as by mechanical means, utilizing weed-eaters and brush-cutters, to provide firefighters an area of defensible space from which to take action on future wildfires.

City Connection: EVMWD approves 'green liens' for foreclosures
The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District board of directors voted last week to approve the use of so-called “green liens” in an effort to keep the lawns of foreclosed properties green. The emergency program, which goes into effect immediately, allows banks, lenders and other owners of foreclosed properties to place a lien on the property to keep the water meters on, thus allowing for the watering of lawns and other landscaping.

City Connection: Police Blotter
All in all, the Labor Day weekend went smoothly for law enforcement, with no major incidents to report, according to Sgt. Joe Belli of the Canyon Lake Police Department. ìWe didnít really see anything more than was expected for a major holiday weekend,î he said, adding that the number of visitors to the Lake was a bit lower than planned for, especially after the record number that came in for the 4th of July weekend.

City Connection: News and Notes
Residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of confidential documents and help the Canyon Lake Library at the same time. Two separate document-shredding events will be held on Sunday, September 14 and September 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot in front of City Hall.

Find food, friends and fun at the Farmer's Market
The Canyon Lake Farmers' Market is much more than just fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers, as anyone who has had the opportunity to stop by has found out. Local vendors offer everything from tiki-inspired planters, hand-carved wooden toys and figures and even jewelry, while freshly prepared food such as roasted corn, salsa, tamales and barbecued meats tempt shoppers as they peruse the rows of goodies.

Giddyap to the Lions/Lioness Western Barbecue hoedown
If kids are cool enough to enjoy western dancing, why shouldn’t adults don their cowboy hats, kick up their heels and reserve a seat for the annual Lioness/Lion Western Barbecue hoedown on Saturday, September 20, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Holiday Harbor. Canyon Lakers, their friends and families are invited to enjoy a dinner of chicken and ribs, coleslaw, barbecued beans, salads and dessert for a $20 donation per person.

Kerrs are patriarchs in 90-year tradition in Indiana
When Mavis Kerr tells friends she and her husband Bob recently attended the 90th reunion of the Kerr family, they look at her in amazement – Mavis and Bob aren’t even 90 years old. Indeed, Bob’s family was getting together before he was born, as seen in a large photograph of 70 family members, among them his mother, who was pregnant with Bob at the time the picture was taken.

Camp outreach benefits local young people
In times of family hardship kids often fall through the cracks unless someone steps in to help out. Three Canyon Lake children, Amanda Keener, 12, Chris Moran, 17, and Justin Moran, 15, who are being raised by their great-grandmother, were fortunate to be helped out as recipients of camp scholarships given to them recently, through Community Outreach Ministry.

Movie Review: 'Babylon A.D.'
Babylon A.D. is bad on so many levels. It fails as a sci-fi adventure, the plot is scrambled and it takes itself far too seriously. The mood and setting of this flick is as dismal and hopeless as “Children of Men,” but severely lacks similar intellectual depth. Yet, action hero Vin Diesel (“Fast and the Furious”) kicks some serious butt once again.

Teen Talk: Making the right choice
Teens of our era have much harder choices and more of them than our parents’ generations. As minors, there are the temptations of drinking or doing drugs and it is a hard place to be at times – especially if you are at a ripe age of 15 to 16 years old, finding new freedoms and choices. How we find ourselves in these situations, I have no idea, but it is something we must deal with.

Good to Know: Submitting information for The Friday Flyer
The Friday Flyer staff recognizes that new residents may have questions about information appearing in the newspaper – for example, “Is there a charge to place an announcement or obituary?” or "Why isn't there more school news in the paper?"

In Memoriam: Jessie Shoemaker
Born January 8, 1920, a daughter of Herbert and Bessie Cook, Jessie Cook Shoemaker passed away after a short illness on August 21 at Menifee Valley Hospital.

Letter: Sky Blue's request
We respectfully request the POA Board of Directors not to remove Sky Blue’s development from the domain of the POA. This project is too risky to our water, air, homes and our lives. There is no bond that could be put up that would guarantee a timely performance. This project could end up like the project outside our East Gate.

Letter: Need Association control
I’m concerned about some information floating about on the attributes of the developers’ proposal for Goat Hill. The developer has not proposed a signal modification to solve the traffic problem. Should such a signal plan become part of the project, it would be reviewed.

Letter: Are we being selfish?
Are we being selfish because we don’t want three years of bad air quality and noise pollution? Are we being selfish because we don’t want to spend the next three years with our windows shut because our homes get so dusty when they are opened? Are we being selfish because our children will have to play inside the house due to air pollution? How would you like having little ones inside for three years?

Letter: Abide by CC&Rs
I am livid that Sky Blue Investment is requesting its property, known as Goetz Hill, to be removed from the jurisdiction and CC&Rs that govern this community! I am not against progress but I am against those who think rules should be bent or done away with because of who they are, or who they think they are!

Letter: Supports Sky Blue's request
Impressive! That is the word that came to mind as I read the letter from Mr. Carlton of Sky Blue Investments regarding their proposal to the POA Board. I can’t imagine anyone not agreeing with the conclusion that, without some type of revenue generating development, the City of Canyon Lake’s future is dismal. It’s just logical.

Letter: Mineral rights
Sky Blue’s letter of July 30, printed on the front page of the August 29 issue of The Friday Flyer, was very interesting. Mr. Carlton requests that the POA Board vote to authorize the removal of Goetz Hill from the domain of the POA. The letter suggests that the POA Board then directs the POA’s attorney to meet with Sky Blue’s attorney.

Letter: The other hill
If you have lived here 10 years or more you might remember the controversy surrounding the other hill in our City! It is the Estates section of town – a 100-acre hill with 2,150 ft. of frontage on Railroad Canyon Rd. Using just 200 ft. of depth alongside the highway would produce 10 acres. In 1997, the City was granted $35,000 to research and seek professional guidance towards a solid financial footing for our new City.

Letter: Seize the opportunity
I agree with the developer that the POA should support the commercial development of Goat Hill. I have been a longtime resident and have watched the community grow and prosper. I have enjoyed a great business within the community and appreciate all my family and I have received from Canyon Lake.

Letter: Fiduciary duty
Sky Blue has asked the POA to remove rights the POA holds on 29.73 acres – all for our benefit. A front page letter in The Friday Flyer telling me why another brand new project will benefit me. Oh what joy! I’m already enduring the “benefits” of the Indian Beach project, the dredging project and the Audie Murphy “brand new” Newport Rd. project. So what can possibly go wrong with another new project? I don’t know.

Letter: Keep 'bit of paradise' as is
I am writing in response to the letter addressed to the POA Board of Directors that appeared on the front page of the August 29 The Friday Flyer from Sky Blue Investments, Inc.

Time to update Directory listings
The Golding Publications staff is preparing for the 2009 edition of Canyon Lake’s Residential Directory. With new escrows closed every month and, lately, foreclosures, it is an overwhelming task to keep the phone book current each year. Residents are reminded that being listed is not mandatory nor automatic.

Photo of the Week: Evening light
The sunset's warm glow is difficult to capture in print; however the dark and light greens in this dappled scene provide a hint of the rays' effect on gently arched trees in Pebble Cove in this photo snapped by Sharon Rice.

Adopt-a-Pet: Frankie and Jewel
This week’s pets include Frankie, a white and brown male rabbit; this friendly guy recently came in along with two other 4-month-old bunnies with similar coloring. Also available is Jewel, a 5-year-old black and white female Dalmatian mix that is already spayed and ready for a new home.

September a busy month at the Senior Center

Non-motorized boats must be registered
The decal on the non-motorized paddleboat of this young fisherman ensures the owner will not be subject to a new fine schedule approved at the August Board meeting. Effective immediately, non-registered, non-motorized boats will be subject to fines that start at $100 and get progressively more expensive.

Water aerobics schedule remains the same this month – synchronized swimming anyone?

According to the ACC: Signs
With major elections just around the corner, this is a good time to remind the community of acceptable practices for signs. While the Association can direct a sign to be placed outside the Community Setback (POA property), we do allow signs to be a minimum of six ft. back from the curb.
