Warm days

Ever since New Year's Day, when this picture was taken by Bert Barbay, Canyon Lakers haved enjoyed delightful weather. "Warm weather in the middle of winter is one reason so many people live in Southern California," says one resident. |

This Week's Lead Stories
This Week's Official CLPOA News
Police chiefs praised for improved crime stats
At last week’s City Council meeting, members praised Canyon Lake Police Chief James McElvain and former Chief Guy Kestell for the fact that crime statistics continue to reveal that Canyon Lake is one of the safest cities in Riverside County.
2009 Residential Directory on its way
Residents will find a copy of the 2009 Canyon Lake Residential Directory in their mailboxes, beginning today. “They may or may not actually arrive at the same time as The Friday Flyer – sometimes the post office likes to distribute them the next day,” says Publisher Chuck Golding.
City Connection: Tentative agreement reached in trail crossing
The legal tussle between the cities of Canyon Lake and Lake Elsinore is likely over with a tentative settlement reached Tuesday night regarding the location of an equestrian trail in a proposed commercial center that will abut Canyon Lake’s North Gate.
City Connection: Council not done tackling ridgeline preservation
A proposed moratorium on hillside development that could have been enacted immediately failed to pass during last week’s City Council meeting when it fell short of the required four-fifths vote, but Council will revisit the issue during February’s meeting, when it will only need a simple majority to approve it.
City Connection: Councilman appointed to transit agency board
Canyon Lake has tapped a new representative from the City to sit on the Riverside Transit Agency’s (RTA) board of directors. Barry Talbot, who joined the Canyon Lake City Council in November, will be handling the important issue of public transportation as a member of the RTA governing board and its Budget and Finance Committee.
City Connection: News and notes
Residents are being asked to complete a pet census and return it to the City so that the Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee is better able to care for the community's pets during an emergency. Those who complete and return the survey will receive the brochure, "Preparing Your Pets for Emergencies" as well as a sign to place in the front window indentifying there are pets in the house.
Longtime resident's photo chosen for Directory cover
When Jon Wade’s photo showed up at The Friday Flyer with this scene from his infinity edge swimming pool overlooking the East Bay on the 4th of July, it was an instant favorite. Not that it’s the most beautiful photo ever turned in for the Photo of the Week feature; it just was . . . so Canyon Lake – with a group of parents and kids enjoying a hot afternoon in the pool, while watching other Canyon Lakers cooling off in the Lake on the busiest boating holiday of the year.
Residents asked to make note of needed corrections in Directory listings
Starting today, Canyon Lakers can expect to find copies of the 2009 Residential Directory in their mailboxes. Residents should check their listings and make note of corrections that need to be made in the 2010 Directory. With hundreds of escrows closed in the community each year and foreclosures on the rise, it is an overwhelming task to keep the phone book current; however, every effort was made to ensure its accuracy.
Fire damage removed at Canyon Fitness
Demolition of the burned out portion of Canyon Fitness Center finally got underway last week and owner David Garcia is optimistic the center will be remodeled in time to reopen in February. While workers from TC Company hustled outside to clear away mounds of twisted and charred metal, David provided a quick tour through the darkened interior, where the smell of smoke still lingered from the November 28 fire that destroyed the upstairs racquetball and basketball courts.
Nominate deserving persons for recognition
Do you have a friend or neighbor who volunteers his or her time to make Canyon Lake a better place to live? Perhaps you know a teenager who serves the community and is an example of everything that’s good about the younger generation. Who would you say should be Citizen of the Year or Business of the Year?
Lioness collecting pull-tabs
The Canyon Lake Lioness Club will be taking aluminum tabs from beverage or soda cans for the Ronald McDonald House in Loma Linda on March 6. This is an ongoing project for the Lioness, according to Joanna Spiller, who says, “It takes 1,276 pull-tabs to make one pound and last year the club delivered over 100 pounds.” Pull-tab donations come from organizations, individuals, corporations and businesses all over Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
Eightieth birthday party includes a bit of history
A party at Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant and Cantina on Saturday, December 3, celebrated more than an 80th birthday for Genevieve Lopez; it celebrated memories of the days when she and her husband, Jose Lopez, owned and operated the popular Canyon Lake eatery from the mid-1970s to the mid-’80s. In fact, Jenny and Joe, as they were known by family and friends, were responsible for the name “Pepe’s” and for the large landmark sign that still stands in front of the restaurant.
CL Blue Thong Society chapter donates money to AFV
The Canyon Lake chapter of the Blue Thong Society presented Animal Friends of the Valleys with a check for $1,583; funds were raised through participation in the Lake Elsinore Outlets Shopping Extravaganza on November 8, 2008. Each year, the Shopping Extravaganza provides charities the opportunity to sell tickets for a day of shopping, lunch, pampering and raffles.
Veteran actors play Anne Frank's parents
Depicting the parents of Anne Frank and the suffering they endured is an opportunity that Leslie Vecchione and Steve Morrison don’t take lightly. The actors will be challenged to depict the lives of Edith and Otto Frank during Canyon Lake Community Theatre’s production of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” which opens at the end of January.
Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Job takes Canyon Laker to 'The Ice'
Antarctica is a land of black and white. Blue skies and the play of sun and shadow across the white expanse of snow and ice provide a beauty that is difficult, if not impossible, to describe. Few people ever have the opportunity to experience that harshest of continents, but Canyon Lake resident Jeremy Rice, a 2008 graduate of Azusa Pacific University, has been there since early October when he accepted a “summer job” with Raytheon Polar Services to work in the dining hall at the United States Antarctic Program’s McMurdo Station.
Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Best of 2008
From the looks of most Near and Far photos sent to The Friday Flyer in 2008, Canyon Lakers seemed to stick with tried and true trips of comfort to tropical destinations like the Caribbean, the Bahamas, the South Pacific, the Mexican Riviera and Costa Rica. A few ventured to tourist destinations in Europe; one went to the Holy Land.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Gran Torino'
For tough guy Clint Eastwood, an “all-nighter” might now be defined as not having to get up at night to use the bathroom. But, it’s scary how the 78-year-old director gets better every year. And, although Clint “retired” from acting with “Million Dollar Baby” (2004), this is the role featuring everything we want to remember him by – the good, the bad, the ugly.
It's Miller Time: Winter home life could be called 'Frost/Miller'
It’s that time of year again – and I’m not referring to anything that has to do with the recent the holiday season – except that in the Miller house it’s not just a verse from a Christmas song. In my house, Jack Frost really is nipping at our noses. You see, my mom, as I have written many time, suffers from what my dad calls “power surges,” or in medical terms, hot flashes.
In Memoriam: Bill Woll
Long time Canyon Lake resident, Wilbur “Bill” Woll, passed away January 5, 2009.
Letter: Cancelled Community Forum
I was disappointed when I received a call last week telling me the POA Community Forum was being cancelled the next day and in the future. I was surprised when I also learned that not all members of the POA Board were aware of the cancellation before the decision was made. As a former POA Director and President, I welcomed the opportunity to hear from our members in a less formal setting than the monthly Board meetings.
Letter: Lioness largesse
On December 22, Canyon Lake Lioness Club members delivered Christmas food baskets to 11 families through the Elsinore Head Start Program. This year’s families included 48 children and each child received gifts purchased by the members, who picked their names and shopped for them. Thanks to the generous donations of our members, we were able to distribute homemade crocheted blankets as well as store bought to each and every family.
Letter: Increase incentives
I honestly don’t know if we have the best staff possible in all our available jobs; but then, not knowing their pay scales (which should be posted occasionally), I’m not sure we’re paying for the best. If we have to cut personnel costs (rather than look in other arenas), we must be more creative; i.e., weed out the ineffective or least senior personnel. That might make for a few unhappy souls but wouldn't damage the whole.
Letter: Website for Bill von Zabern
I cannot begin to describe the feeling of loss that so many of us have with the passing of Bill Von Zabern. He was a good friend and a great man. He will be missed by so many people within this community. With help from website master Marc, we have built a memorial website in honor of Bill at www.BillvonZabern.com.
Letter: Learn more about ordinance
At the last City Council Meeting, our newly elected Councilman Jordan Ehrenkranz voted against an ordinance that would ultimately protect 23 ridgeline vistas that we currently enjoy. I believe I heard Councilman Ehrenkranz say that he has been here for 39 years and sees no need for such an ordinance. Might I remind everyone that the “powers that be” in the past saw no need for a sphere of influence to be put into place around the City of Canyon Lake.

Plan to watch playoffs at the Country Club
It’s time for the football playoffs! And where better to watch them than with friends and neighbors during the Country Club’s Sunday Brunch? Getting into the spirit of the competition, the dining room staff and bartender are wearing team jerseys, while new large screen TVs are tuned to the action.
Find forms at POA website
The POA website, www.canyonlakepoa.com, makes it much easier for residents to get forms and documents to take care of business in Canyon Lake. The links column on the left side of the home page has a section called “Document Center” that gives residents access to every document the POA provides.
Committees impact Canyon Lake operations
Residents have the opportunity to get involved in many aspects of community life by volunteering to serve on Property Owners Association committees. Committees currently looking for additional volunteers are Community Patrol, Appeals and Lake and Marina.
ACCording to the ACC: Community Setback, easements
The Community Setback adjacent to each lot is actually part of the private street lot owned by the Association. The Community Setback typically should only be improved with softscape landscaping. This would fall into the category of grass, bark or landscape gravel.
Did You Know?: Non-golfers should remain off Golf Course
With the warmer weather right around the corner, I thought I would talk about a couple of safety issues that are a major concern at the Golf Course. While it seems like the Course would be a nice venue to walk around with family or friends, unfortunately, and for good reasons, it is not permitted under Association rules.
