Fit for polar bears!

Brrr . . . this wintry scene captured by Art Zasio says it all for Canyon Lake skiers, barefooters, hydrofoilers and wakeboarders who are planning to brave the Lake's chilly waters without wetsuits tomorrow, January 3, for the Ski Club's annual Polar Bear Day. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. off the shores of Sunset Beach. Towboats will be on hand to pull skiers; some ski equipment will be available for those who do not have their own. Participants can fill up on hotdogs, hamburgers, chili and other goodies. Spectators also are invited to partake of the shoreline repast for a small fee. The cost for the day's event is $7 for the ski ride and official 2009 patch or badge, or $20 if the participant wants a T-shirt as well. Others who want a Polar Bear shirt may purchase one for $15. |

This Week's Official CLPOA News
Animal shelter coming
Not all real estate news is bad these days. Canyon Lake residents are invited to celebrate with other Southwest Riverside County citizens in the long-awaited groundbreaking for the new Southwest Communities Animal Shelter on Monday, January 5, at 10 a.m. at 33751 Mission Trail in Wildomar.
A new year means new laws
With festivities marking the New Year passed, and the reality of sticking to resolutions now looming, it’s easy to forget about another annual tradition: January 1 is the day many new state laws take effect. While 2009 doesn’t usher in nearly the number of laws that 2007 and 2008 saw, there are a few that Canyon Lakers should know.
City Connection: Mayor offers a message for the new year
There is an old Chinese proverb that is both a blessing and a curse – “May you live in interesting times.” This year has certainly been interesting – an understatement for sure! Hopefully, next year will be interesting, but different!
City Connection: Animals becoming victims of housing crunch
Almost every day, a family comes into the Animal Friends of the Valley (AFV) to give up their beloved pets due to the recent loss of their home. For the families and the staff at AFV, it is heartbreaking to watch the upset family – including crying children – walk away as the confused dog barks and frantically tries to escape the kennel to follow the family.
City Connection: New 2009 calendar available
Residents are invited to stop by City Hall and pick up a free 2009 calendar. Provided through a grant obtained by the Riverside County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, the focus of the calendar is on protecting and preserving the environment, with each month offering tips and suggestions on how residents can do their part.
Canyon Lake Little League offers girls' softball
There’s a new game in town! This spring, in addition to baseball, Canyon Lake Little League will offer girls’ softball for ages 8 to 12. Softball teams will compete against neighboring communities. In order for this new venture to operate as smoothly as possible, the CLLL board of directors hopes there are volunteers who will take a leadership role in the formation and organization of the team or teams.
Actors feel the story behind 'Frank' characters
Kate Chapin, Alec Jenkins and James Szepkouski understand they are portraying real people in history who helped a Jewish family stay alive long enough for a young girl’s story to be told to future generations. The young girl was Anne Frank; the people who helped her family were Miep Giles and Victor Kraeler. An elderly dentist, Mr. Dussel, was with the family in hiding.
Community Theatre presents 'The Story of Us'
Sometimes, reality is better than fiction. Every couple has a story – whether it’s how they met, hardships faced together or even the moment they fell in love – and Canyon Lake Community Theatre wants to include those stories on February 14, when it hosts its annual Valentine’s show. As always, the night will be filled with romance, entertainment, dining and dancing. This year, the performance will not only showcase local talent, but also local couples.
Nominate deserving persons for recognition
Do you have a friend or neighbor who volunteers his or her time to make Canyon Lake a better place to live? Perhaps you know a teenager who serves the community and is an example of everything that’s good about the younger generation. Who would you say should be Citizen of the Year or Business of the Year?
Making resolutions 'an act of significance'
Every New Year, millions of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. Whether the resolution is to get out of debt, to spend more time with loved ones or to quit smoking, these resolutions have one thing in common: they are goals to make one\\\'s life better. "Unfortunately, this ritual commitment to self-improvement is widely viewed as something of a joke - in part because New Year's resolutions go so notoriously unmet," says Alex Epstein
'Rose princess' still afloat with memories
Since 1890, when members of the Pasadena Hunt Club decided to hold a festival to tell the world about California’s winter paradise, with its blooming flowers and oranges, many girls growing up in Pasadena dreamed of being selected for the Tournament of Roses Royal Court. Others, like a girl named Jetsy, were happy to live close enough to the parade route to collect fifty cents for valet parking in their backyards, never dreaming they one day would be part of the parade.
Rescued horses in need of local support
There is a place in Murrieta called the Dudette Ranch, established by Pattie Roberts, a familiar face around Southwest Riverside County for her work promoting good causes with local radio station KFROG and her own marketing agency. The concept for the Dudette Ranch was a take-off of the vacation destination “dude ranch.”
The Friday Flyer welcomes fitness columnist
Just in time for New Year’s resolutions that are sure to include a desire for better health, The Friday Flyer welcomes new columnist, Dustin Graham, a Canyon Lake resident and fitness director for Menifee Valley Athletic Club, who will be writing a new column on health and fitness. Dustin has been involved with the fitness industry for about 10 years, the first five as an athlete and fitness enthusiast and the last five as a fitness professional.
Notes from the Road: Aliens and an outlaw are an improbable mix
It came to pass in late September that Dorothy and I set out on a drive around the Southwest. Our route took us first to Dallas, Texas, then to Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico, and finally Bullhead City, Arizona. This narrative begins as we left Roswell, New Mexico, westward along Highway 380 toward the little mountain town of Ruidoso Downs.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' 'Valkyrie' and 'Doubt'
This holiday triple feature delivers top stars, brilliant performances and intelligent storylines. Just as important, expect an abundance of Academy Award nominations.
Teen Talk: Sometimes teenagers need an ear - not an opinion
As a sophomore in high school, I know firsthand how much teenagers need friends, family and alone time. Throughout my personal experience in high school so far, I don’t know how far I would have gotten without the support of my friends. But what happens when your friends can’t help, or are too busy with their own drama to deal with yours? What would you do if you were alone, with no shoulder to cry on and no one to console you?

Photo of the Week: Nature's gift shines on Christmas morning
For those who like a change of pace in the weather and enjoy rain, Christmas Day offered a special treat this year. An added blessing was the rainbow that lingered over the community for about an hour that morning. Several residents went to the trouble of sending their digital photographs to The Friday Flyer.
