Reporter Budget cuts and decreases in school funding can’t hold back 38 spirited members of the Canyon Lake Middle School Cheer team, which qualified for the USA Junior Spirit Nationals at Disney’s California Adventure Park on March 1. The excited girls are on a mission to raise the $4,000 they need to compete. While the cost of competing in Nationals is daunting, the cheer squad, song squad and stunt group are determined to raise the money by the February 14 deadline through a variety of fundraisers, according to their coach Tammy Howard. Residents will be able to show their support for the team by attending a garage sale and bake sale tomorrow at 30390 Sparkle Dr. from 8 a.m. to noon. Other fundraising activities planned are a car wash and a Build-A-Bear fundraiser, with the bears being donated to hospitalized children. The girls also are considering a fundraising movie night or bowling night. Along with fundraising and planning for the competition they continue to be involved in regional competitions, including a competition last weekend at the USA Regional at Great Oak High School in Temecula, which gave them the points they needed to qualify for Nationals. They also will compete at a Sharp International competition in Hemet on February 7. |
