Winter is here - cut back on outdoor watering

It’s no secret California is in the midst of a drought. With that in mind, the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District is encouraging residents to conserve water by reducing outdoor water use.
Between December and March, yards require very little water, according to officials, who suggest residents reduce their watering to two to three days a week for 10 minutes a day, and never during the day, with the exception of handwatering to establish new landscaping. It’s also important to turn off sprinklers when it’s raining.
Another way to save more water outdoors this winter is to replace sprinklers with “MP Rotators.” The EVMWD is offering the MP Rotators at cost at just $0.61 each. These sprinklers are multi-stream rotors that use water pressure to rotate across the lawn, providing more efficient coverage and reduced water runoff, according to Conservation Specialist Rob Whipple. MP rotators are easy to install, requiring one to unscrew old sprinklers and screw on the new ones. They are also adjustable and can be set at 45 to 360 degree angles.
Drought-resistant landscaping, or xeriscaping, is also encouraged; officials estimate approximately 50 percent of residential water used is applied to landscape and lawns. Xeriscaping with native plants and utilizing alternatives to traditional lawns can reduce landscape water use by 50 to 75 percent. Alternatives to lawns include the use of groundcover – plants which spread across the ground but don’t grow tall – and clover. Or try reducing the size of an existing lawn by strategically locating flower and shrub beds. Added benefits to landscape and lawn alternatives include less maintenance and reducing or eliminating the need for fertilizers or pesticides.
