News Briefs Titan baseball fundraiser The TCHS Baseball Boosters would like to invite residents to join them for a Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon Baseball Booster fundraiser on Monday, January 26, from 5 to 9 p.m. at 18601 Dexter Avenue, Lake Elsinore. A Lone Star flyer can be printed off at www.tchsbaseball.com and 15 percent of all sales, minus alcohol and tax, will be calculated and contributed back to the TCHS Baseball Boosters. The flyer must be presented to the server when the bill is given in order for credit to be calculated. The boosters would like to thank the community for supporting its teams. LEUSD open enrollment During the month of January, parents can apply for their children to be transferred to a different Lake Elsinore Unified School District campus from the one they are currently attending. Open enrollment ends Friday, January 30. Parents can pick up transfer requests at their child’s school or at the District Office Student Services Department, 565 Chaney St. in Lake Elsinore. Certain schools may be closed to transfers or have limited space. Yacht Club scholarship The Canyon Lake Yacht Club announces its scholarship program for 2009, open to high school seniors who reside in Canyon Lake and attend a local high school. Casino bus trip The Canyon Lake Woman’s Club has planned a bus trip to Pechanga Casino on Wednesday, February 11, as a club fundraiser. The donation is $15. The casino will give each passenger a $5 coupon upon arrival. The bus will leave the Lodge parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and return from Pechanga at approximately 2:30 p.m. Those who have a current Pechanga Casino card should have this number available when making reservations. Bosom Buddies Bosom Buddies is a volunteer support organization dedicated to helping women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Women receive support and resources from other breast cancer survivors. Contact Bosom Buddies if you or a loved one has received the diagnosis of breast cancer. The Canyon Lake Lions and Lioness Clubs host Bingo the first and third Sundays of each month at 1 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. The next Bingo will be this Sunday, February 1. Caregiver support group Carmen Estrada of Inland Caregivers Resource Center will make a presentation on services and provide information on self-care at the next Caregiver Connection meeting on January 26. Connection Support Group for caregivers and their patients meets at Canyon Lake Community Church on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in room C5 and C6. Census Bureau jobs The Census Bureau is currently hiring workers, 18 years or older, for the 2010 Census and will conduct employment tests in Canyon Lake. Testing will be held every Monday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., beginning January 26, in either the POA or City Hall buildings, depending on the date. Positions are available for Census takers, crew leaders, crew leader assistants and recruiting assistants, with some positions available now. The test takes one-half hour and is a basic skills test. Free tax preparation The AARP tax aid volunteers will be available to assist taxpayers with low and middle income, with special attention to those 60 years and older. The free service is not limited to seniors. The service includes preparation of all tax forms and e-filing returns. Free trees The Arbor Day Foundation is offering residents of California five free Crapemyrtle trees when they make a $10 contribution and become a member of the organization. Grief Group Talking with others often helps relieve some of the pain that is experienced with the passing of a loved one, according to organizers of a Grief Group that meets at Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church, 30400 Grand Ave. in Lake Elsinore. Senior softball Softball players 55 and older are needed for a senior men’s league in Menifee. Basketball sign-ups Southwest Family YMCA is now taking registrations for its spring basketball season. Teams are formed by school and local area and are open to boys and girls in kindergarten through high school. Games are played on Saturdays in Murrieta and run from March 7 to May 16. Computer Club The Computer Club of Menifee Valley welcomes all who have an interest in computers. Hospital volunteers needed Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. Senior bowlers wanted Residents interested in bowling on a senior league on Mondays at 1 p.m. are invited to join other seniors at the Trevi Bowling Center. Teams consist of four bowlers. Child advocates needed The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. Thank the troops Xerox Corporation has created a simple way for citizens to thank military personnel overseas at www.letssaythanks.com. The sender selects a design and message, which is then personalized with the senders name and town. Xerox then prints and sends a postcard to a member of the military stationed overseas. It only takes a few minutes to send a postcard and say thanks. Donate a mammogram The Breast Cancer website invites people to click on its site daily so it can meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one thing. Corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. |
