Looking like one of the pods hanging from this sycamore tree, a tiny hummingbird is silhouetted against the vermillion clouds of a January sunset. Photographer Kathryn Kanaan called the sunset on January 19 an "awesome blossom of color." |

City Manager 'blogs' to provide information
It’s the Information Age and communication between the public and private sectors has never been more available than it is now via the Internet. In an ongoing effort to provide up-to-the-minute information to Canyon Lake residents and businesses, City Manager Lori Moss this week launched the new “4 Your Information Blog,” which can be found on the City’s website at www.cityofcanyonlake.com.
Committee sets disaster goals
While many would prefer not to think about what might happen if a large-scale earthquake were to hit the area, there are others who only think about that scenario so that, in the event it does happen, they are prepared to leap into action and provide assistance to the community in the hours and days following a temblor.
Protect pets during widespread disasters
A major goal of the Emergency Preparedness Committee last year was to develop a pet safety program, with Mayor Mary Craton taking the lead on the project. This includes a pet census designed to help the CLEPC protect pets during a disaster and determine shelter needs.
City Connection: Mayor selected to chair regional committee
It was announced this week that Canyon Lake Mayor Mary Craton was selected as the 2009 chair of the Budget and Implementation Committee for the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC). City Connection: Library celebrating Year of the Ox
Celebrate the Chinese New Year at the Canyon Lake Library with two upcoming events next week. On Wednesday, February 4, at 4 p.m., storyteller Barbara G. Wong will present folktales and magical stories, some of which are thousands of years old, to help usher in the Year of the Ox, which began January 26. On Friday, February 6, continue the celebration with pre-school story time from 11 a.m. to noon.

The meeting also is carried live on Time Warner public access channel 29 as well as via a live webcast on the City’s website at www.cityofcanyonlake.com. Two separate public hearings will be held during the course of the meeting.
Holocaust story continues through weekend
Producer MaryAnne Stevens and Director CoCo Morrison are sure audiences will be moved by Canyon Lake Community Theatre’s production of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” which opened last night at the Lodge and continues with three more performances tonight and tomorrow. Set in the summer of 1942 through January 1944, it is the impassioned and poignant story of the life of a young girl and her family who sought shelter from the Holocaust.
Happy camping during Presidents' Day weekend
Canyon Lake Campground Club President Alex Cook wants to let residents know about a President’s Day Special at the Campground the weekend of February 14 to 16. Residents are invited to stay three nights and get the fourth night free, or stay seven days and pay for only five. What a great way to spend some quality time outside on a long weekend,” says Alex.
Fashion show tickets to go on sale soon
In less than three months, the Woman’s Club’s annual fashion show will be held on April 24. The popular event never fails to sell out, so Nyla Finch, who serves as chair for the event, and Marilyn Moreno and Suzi Delia, who serve as co-chairs, urge women to buy their tickets early. Tickets will be available for $40 each, beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, February 18.
Wartime romance has a sweet fairytale twist
Being in love and sharing special moments with a sweetheart during times of war has its unique set of challenges. Those challenges were overcome more than 66 years ago during World War II by two well-known and romantically determined Canyon Lake sweethearts, Carl and Dorothy Armbrust. Carl, an aviator, and his fiancée Dorothy were separated during the war in 1942 while Carl was stationed in Florida.

Local scooter riders score extreme wins
If something has wheels, it usually doesn’t take long for someone to figure out how to turn it into an extreme sport, as was the case for the Razor and other brands of scooters. To some, scooters may look like a metal skateboard with handlebars; however, with reinforcements and modifications, thrill-seekers are exploring the boundaries of gravity and creating new stunts and acrobatic tricks with their scooters.
Monteleone T-shirt fundraiser
Fundraising T-shirts are being sold to benefit former resident, Mackenzie Monteleone, who was injured in a golf cart accident on November 4, 2007. She was 10 years old when the accident occurred and still remains in an acute vegetative state. According to her mother, Chantelle, she has shown some improvement following stem-cell injections in China, which cost $25,000.
Consumers warned about foreclosure scams
If you think you or someone you know may be facing foreclosure, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, wants you to know how to recognize a foreclosure rescue scam. And even if the foreclosure process has already begun, the FTC and its law enforcement partners want you to know that legitimate options are available to help save your home.
Tax Tips: Be aware of suspicious e-mails
Be aware of e-mail scams that fraudulently use the IRS name or logo as a lure. The goal of the scam is to trick people into revealing personal and financial information, such as Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers, which the scammers can use to commit identity theft and steal your money.
Looking Back: What happened in January of past years?
In 1974, Canyon Lake celebrated its sixth year of existence. Local parents faced circumstances that assigned Canyon Lake students to three separate school districts inasmuch as district boundaries at the time depended on where the pupil’s residence was located within the gated community. Therefore, some Canyon Lake students attended the Elsinore Union Schools, while others were assigned to Perris or Menifee schools.
Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Family visits once war-torn country of Vietnam
Unless they served in Vietnam, the images most Americans hold of that small, Southeast Asia nation come from war movies like “Apocalypse Now,” “Platoon,” “We Were Soldiers” and “Forest Gump.” Yet, with so many Vietnamese immigrants becoming a part of the melting pot of American culture, more U.S. citizens are visiting Vietnam as tourists and even relatives.
Where Are They Now?: Hoopster goes pro in Germany's 'Regionalliga'
Living up to the Southwestern League MVP award he earned in basketball in 2001, Joseph Roberson, 25, continues to accumulate accolades in the sport he has been playing with passion since he was a young child shooting hoops with his dad at the East Gate. Most recently he was voted to be a starter in the Regionalliga All-Star game, playing for the city of Treis-Karden, Germany.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Wrestler' and 'The Reader'
This heavily Oscar nominated double feature includes serious melodramas with powerfully physical acting performances and an ample supply of nakedness. Enjoy these movies this weekend; or in this case, maybe mid-week, say Wednesday (hump-day).
Teen Talk: Confessions of a newly-converted football fan
I have never understood the attraction to watching football on TV. I have watched my mom and her friends, cheering as if the greatest thing in the world just happened or yelling at the TV as if it could respond back. All the while I'm thinking, this is fun for them? I thought adults must have forgotten what real fun is. I mean, really. I’m a teenage girl, so this kind of stuff doesn’t excite me to an extreme.
Announcement: Preparing for a May wedding
Randy and Mavis Schutz are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jessica, to Joseph Jacques of Menifee. Jessica is a graduate of Temescal Canyon High School and Halafax University in London, England. She is employed in management at Enterprise Car Rental in Murrieta.

Letter: Golf memberships
Could there possibly be a worse proposal than opening up our “private” Golf Course to limited outside membership? What next? Will we open the Lake to limited outside boat passes, the Equestrian Center, or how about reopening the Lodge and allowing unlimited traffic to non-residents to dine? Didn’t we just go through a lawsuit to protect our right to private access to the Lake?
Letter: What's happening with Lighthouse?
I was dismayed to learn the Community Forum had been cancelled just days before I intended to approach the Board for an update on the Lighthouse. I wanted to ask what progress has been made toward re-opening this important amenity in April this year as was reported in The Friday Flyer at the time of its closing.
Letter: What improvements?
I was astonished to read in last week’s The Friday Flyer that an EVMWD director actually believes that the Continental Lift Station project provided “a new and improved Indian Beach.” Due to the project, the beautifully wooded Indian Beach Park lost over 100 trees. The scenic neighborhood fishing pond, enjoyed by kids and adults, was converted into an ugly drainage ditch.
Letter: Lost item
On Monday, January 26, I was at Pack, Wrap and Post making copies of an article from the Canyon Lake Golf Bulletin about my husband, Harvey Malcolmson, and his passing on April 28, 2008. In my haste, I accidentally left the original in the copy machine. After returning home and realizing what I had done, I returned about an hour later to retrieve the original, which was in a clear plastic holder to protect it from damage.
