Frosty freeze

Like the Christmas Day rainbow pictured in last week's issue, the sight of snow-clad mountains following the rainstorms in December prompted a number of photographers to send in photos. In particular, the first morning after the rain, as clouds finally drew back like curtains on a stage, snowy peaks were the star of the show, inspiring Kathryn Kanaan to snap this scene from her home on Yosemite Dr.

Polar Bear Day ends tragically
Exactly two months to the day after breaking two world records in flips on a hydrofoil, Bill von Zabern, 42, was with people he loved, doing what he loved best by skiing in Polar Bear Day on January 3. Tragically, it’s also when his life ended. Observers in the boat and on shore say Bill had just finished a front roll on his hydrofoil and was doing a wake back roll when he let go of the line and collapsed into the water.

The Community Forum cancelled
One of the only avenues for public discussion between residents and the Board of Directors was abruptly closed this week when POA president Kreg McCoy cancelled the Association’s monthly Community Forum meetings. In June 2006, the Board of Directors unanimously voted to hold these informal meetings each month at which residents had the opportunity to speak to the POA Directors and senior staff about community concerns

Council rejects ordinances in first meeting of the year
The new year got off to a busy start for the Canyon Lake City Council Wednesday as members were brought up to date on the City’s redevelopment plans and discussed a number of hot-button items. One of those items, a 45-day moratorium on the granting of permits for development along ridgelines in the community, did not achieve the required 4/5 vote after Marty Gibson recused himself and Councilmember Jordan Ehrenkraz voted against it.

City Connection: Don't forget to include pets in disaster planning
The Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee (CLEPC) has spent a great deal of time and effort over the past few years to make sure that residents know what to do and where to go in the case of a natural disaster or other emergency, but what about pets? The committee, through the work of long-standing member Mayor Mary Craton, now has prepared a plan for pets in the event of a disaster.

City Connection: Animal shelter groundbreaking draws hundreds
Local dignitaries, donors and animal lovers were on hand for Monday’s groundbreaking at the site of the new regional animal shelter in Wildomar, with reports of between 200 and 300 people in attendance. Canyon Lake Mayor Mary Craton joined with officials from the County of Riverside and the cities of Temecula, Murrieta and Lake Elsinore in using her golden shovel to scoop up a ceremonial chunk of earth, commemorating a day that was more than a decade in the making.

City Connection: News and notes
The City of Canyon Lake welcomes new contract City Planner Lori Charpentier of Hogle-Ireland. Lori took over City planning duties from Mario Suarez, who was reassigned within the company. Lori brings with her considerable experience in both public and private planning in the six years she has worked in the field, having provided contract staff planning assistance to several other cities, including Murrieta, Adelanto, Hesperia and Big Bear Lake.

Nominate deserving persons for recognition
Do you have a friend or neighbor who volunteers his or her time to make Canyon Lake a better place to live? Perhaps you know a teenager who serves the community and is an example of everything that’s good about the younger generation. Who would you say should be Citizen of the Year or Business of the Year?

Van Daan family roles challenge play's actors
Haley Wagner, Devon Fava and Chris Howell portray the Van Pels family in “The Diary of Anne Frank.” Little is known about the Pels, who were also hiding in the Secret Annex and who Anne refers to in her diary. In both the published version of Anne’s diary and the play, they were known as the Van Daan family. The play presents a caricature of the Van Daan family but with questions about where they came from and how they ended up with the Franks.

Community Theatre presents 'The Story of Us'
Every couple has a story and Canyon Lake Community Theatre wants to include those stories on February 14, when it hosts its annual Valentine’s show. This year, the performance will not only showcase local talent, but also local couples. Residents are invited to submit their real love stories, along with their song, and photo (recent or past). Organizers are hoping to receive stories and songs that span the decades.

It's the right time for the right Price
Sara Price has had another good year with Monster Kawasaki Team Green and is looking forward to going pro in May. One of her big wins this past fall was the Winter Mini Olympics in Gainesville, Florida, over Thanksgiving weekend, where she took 2nd place in Women’s Amateur motocross and 3rd in supercross.

Find fresh produce for winter recipes
Canyon Lake Certified Farmers’ Market vendor Deirdre Darrow, a Pampered Chef Consultant and Canyon Lake resident, encourages residents to keep coming out to the Farmers’ Market on Sundays in the Towne Center. She notes it is especially important to eat healthy fresh fruits and vegetables to ward of the cold and flu season, and buying produce from local growers insures it is locally grown, vine-ripened and brimming with essential nutrients that fruits and vegetables shipped from other places might lack.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Of dolphins and pirates
The Novins family traveled to Cancun for nine days over the Thanksgiving holiday, staying at Dreams Cancun, where guests have the opportunity to swim with dolphins.  Christy Novins calls swimming with the dolphins “one of the highlights” of their trip. Mark, Christy and Trevor kept busy every day they were there.

Letter: Time to cut back
Times are tough everywhere in this country, not only in our City of Canyon Lake. It’s time to make some tough choices. Time to renegotiate our outside service contracts to save money. Time to cut POA personnel. No more hikes in monthly dues, fees and fines on the backs of Canyon Lake property owners to balance the budget.

Letter: New Year's Eve traffic jam
Having lived in Canyon Lake for less than a year, yet in/under POAs and HOAs for many years, I am pretty used to bone-headed ways of doing business. Indeed, most of the time now it is just quiet resignation, if not tolerance and understanding, when something goofy goes on.

Letter: Canyon Lake comes through
I want to thank you for running the article (December 12) on Animal Friends of the Valleys’ needs over Christmas. Canyon Lake came through unbelievably. It looked like a pet store in my living room. The Canyon Lake Association of Men (CLAMS) even got involved in a very generous money donation to the shelter.

Is this your year to serve on a committee?
Residents have the opportunity to get involved in many aspects of community life by volunteering to serve on Property Owners Association committees. Committees currently looking for additional volunteers are Community Patrol, Appeals and Lake and Marina. Committee members meet together regularly to discuss areas of concern within their jurisdiction, researching possible solutions and making suggestions to the POA Board of Directors for changes or improvements.

Greg Veach, Radio 60 at Country Club tonight
Enjoy dinner and live music tonight at the Country Club. In addition to the regular menu, tonight’s dinner specials are coconut shrimp for $11.95 and almondine trout for $12.95. Country Club favorites include the two cuts of prime rib – an 8-oz. cut for $14.95 and a 10-oz. cut for $18.95; and baby back ribs – a half slab for $12 and a full slab for $15.35.

Sign up for computer classes
For residents of all ages who desire a convenient way to expand their knowledge of computers and various applications, the POA is offering a new schedule of computer classes, beginning in January. Classes will be held at the Senior Center, are limited to eight students and are open to all residents. Some classes fill up early, so register now at the Member Services Counter, making checks payable to the Senior Committee.

Don't park on streets during street sweeping
Members and their guests play a part in ensuring streets are clean by not parking on the street for sweep day between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Moving vehicles off a street scheduled for sweeping allows the sweeper to thoroughly clean the street from curb-to-curb. One parked car equals nearly three car-lengths of space that can’t be swept because the street sweeping equipment must leave room to avoid it.

ACCording to the ACC: Holiday decorations
Happy New Year to one and all! The ACC Department would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the Association’s Rules and Regulations regarding holiday decorations – specifically AG-Q, which states: “Decorations for the end of the year holidays may be placed on the property no earlier than the fourth Thursday of November, and must be removed no later than January 15 of the following calendar year.”

Did You Know?: Exercise classes meet all over town
Did you know it’s lonely down here at the Pool? We’re looking forward to reopening in mid-March. Has everyone been keeping his New Year’s promise? That’s what it is – a promise to do better and be better for the new year. I think it’s a great way to reflect on where we need to improve. I don’t know about you, but I try to make a promise that will help me personally and one to help me physically.
