Harvest Moon

According to folklore, the light from September's Harvest Moon was said to help farmers bring in their crops and was so named because it provided greater light at harvest time. Often, this orb seems to be bigger or brighter or more colorful than other moons. This optical illusion has to do with the seasonal tilt of the earth and the moon staying lower on the horizon, according to astronomers. Capturing this Harvest Moon was Irma Covarrubias.

Ever wonder what a deputy sheriff does during an ordinary patrol? Movies highlight exciting things, like vehicle pursuits, chasing bad guys through dark alleys or investigating major crimes. It is true there are times when adrenaline is flowing and things get exciting. A police officer’s day can be very routine but is in no way boring.

Arts, Entertainment and Haunted Happenings
October is a busy month in Canyon Lake and the surrounding areas with many fall festivals and Halloween activities on the calendar. Canyon Lakers especially will want to mark their calendars for local community-wide events sponsored by Canyon Lake clubs.

'A haunting we will go' decor invitation
Many residents like to get into the “spirit” of the season with fall décor and haunted houses. Vickie Spring, with neighbor Dottie Shea, has held a “haunted display” at her home on Fairweather Dr. for the past several years. She invites residents to stop by again this year. It’s an annual tradition for The Friday Flyer to list the addresses of homes with “spooktacular” Halloween decorations, haunted houses and/or mazes that will be open to the public for Halloween.

New Hope ready to serve from the Towne Center
A lot of prayer and sacrifice were involved when New Hope Church and its leaders decided to make a major move to a new location, and even more was needed since it also involved relocating its school, New Hope Learning Academy. The prayers, sacrifice and hard work by leaders and the congregation have all been rewarded with a blessing by the City in the form of a final occupancy permit that was received recently, replacing the temporary occupancy permit under which the group was operating.

'My Fair Lady' finishes on a high note
Rave reviews for Canyon Lake Community Theatre’s musical production of “My Fair Lady” continued coming in to The Friday Flyer after last Saturday’s final, sellout performance at Indian Beach. Producer Debbie Miller says she and Director Lisa Tousseau loved that there were so many of CLCT’s founders and old favorites in the show, as well as returning to attend the show.

Canyon Fitness Center celebrates re-opening
Fitness opportunities are back in town with the recent re-opening of Canyon Fitness Center on Railroad Canyon Rd. A year ago, the day after Thanksgiving was truly a “Black Friday” for David Garcia’s business – but not in a good way. David is the owner of Canyon Fitness Center (CFC) and, as residents may recall, that was the day the second floor of his fitness center, housing racquetball and basketball courts, became a blackened, charred skeleton of melted metal following an early morning blaze.

What happened in October of past years
In October of 1974, the Raymond Poche family had just moved to Canyon Lake, memberships were solicited for the Quail Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Ernest C. Pruett was the POA General Manager. Rough grading and the removal of 10,000 yards of soil was underway because the three-acre parcel on the corner of Sorrel Ln. and Railroad Canyon Rd. was being prepared for the proposed Canyon Lake Community Church.

Sign up for Parade of Lights
It’s time to plan a float for this year’s Parade of Lights. The 2009 Parade of Lights is dedicated to the memory of Yacht Club Commodore Steve Volkoff and the goal is to increase the number of boats that participate in our community," says Parade of Lights Chairperson Kelly Marich.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Zombieland'
Anyone who has ever seen a zombie movie knows generally what to expect from the undead. More importantly, we know what to expect from the powerless and defenseless human victims. But, if you want to expect the unexpected, “Zombieland” delivers a terrific concept more in the spirit of “Shaun of the Dead,” only with an American style of humor.

Mom About Town: Teatime ritual brews up a potluck of giggles
I am sure we'll all agree: there's nothing like a cup of tea! If I were to tell you I often pay around $20 for a couple of tiny finger sandwiches and a small scone, you'd probably think I have more money than sense. But I do it, and even though I am notoriously cheap, I consider it money well spent. I am talking about having tea.

Canyon Lake Ink: New column will feature art of the tattoo
Welcome to this new series highlighting one of Canyon Lake’s more prominent art forms: tattoos. The Friday Flyer’s new “Mom About Town” columnist, Betsy Semmens, is adding a new beat to her “about town” profile by asking residents to talk about their tattoos – a highly personal form of art that has been around since the Bronze Age or earlier.

Letter: Move POA Admin to Lodge
To respond to the letters that support raising our monthly fee to keep the Lodge open as a restaurant, I beg to differ. In this economic time, the Board has a responsibility to find ways to trim the budget, cut back on all expenses, and lower our fees.

Letter: Open our restaurant
We have been residents of Canyon Lake long enough to see several changes to our community. One of our greatest joys was to frequent the restaurant and bar on Friday and/or Saturday evening with an occasional “Sunday Brunch.”

Letter: Supporting Progeria research
On behalf of the California Chapter of the Progeria Research Foundation and the Foose Family, I want to thank everyone who came to the Car Show and bought tickets and made donations to The Progeria Research Foundation. With your generous support we raised $7,151.00. The money will go 100 percent to help fund the second clinical trial.

Letter: Driveway storage
Permanent storage in the driveway or front yard area of our homes is not allowed under the rules in our CC&Rs. Our current rules and regulations state the following: “No inoperable vehicle, or vehicle that is not used regularly, i.e. at least once a week, shall be parked or stored on any lot in such a manner as to be visible from any other lot, street, Lake of Golf Course within Canyon Lake.
