Centerpiece

Just as many Canyon Lake families place a centerpiece on their tables for the holidays, the Lighthouse serves as the community's centerpiece, reflected in the Lake's mirror and illuminated by the rising sun in this photograph by Anthony Arendt. This Week's Official CLPOA News

Holiday events open with Thursday's concert
The next two weeks are busy ones in Canyon Lake, so residents will want to mark their calendars for the events they’re interested in attending. Several clubs and organizations have put a lot of effort into creating a festive holiday season, so residents may want to consider making this their year to become more “community minded.”

Settlement Agreement announced in Bolanos lawsuit
The Friday Flyer learned this week that a “settlement agreement and mutual release” has been reached in the case of Mark Bolanos vs. the CLPOA, the City of Canyon Lake, the EVMWD and Allied Security.

Business license ordinance discussion to continue
The Canyon Lake City Council will meet Wednesday, December 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the City/POA Boardroom to discuss and potentially take action on a modification to the current business license ordinance, which would confirm that the requirement is actually a business registration requirement.

City Connection

City Connection: Library activities planned for kids in December
A Thanksgiving Ceramic Workshop was held in the City Multi-purpose Room on November 18.  With the help of Ceramics to Go, youngsters were able to make ceramics with a Thanksgiving theme. They were also able to pick up the Halloween ceramics that they made in the last session. These works of art had been fired in a kiln and were ready for the youngsters to take home.

Spark of Love toy drive ignites this weekend
The Spark of Love Toy Drive, sponsored by Riverside County Firefighters, begins accepting donations for its 17th season this weekend. The toy drive is an annual campaign that benefits less fortunate children by providing them with gifts for the holidays. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off in specially marked boxes at Fire Station 60, located at 28730 Vacation Dr., through December 24.

Charitable giving calls for wise choices
“With the holiday season upon us, many good-willed individuals express their generosity by giving to those less fortunate,” says Lawrence Loesch, former NYPD Deputy Chief and Vice President/General Manager for AlliedBarton Security Services. “Unfortunately, that can also create an opportunity for scam artists to take advantage of the kindness of others. It is important to make certain your generosity is received by those who need it most.”

Chamber Notes
Upcoming events include the Tree-lighting ceremony and December luncheon.

Join the Parade
Clubs, individuals, families and groups of friends are welcome to string their boats with lights and join in the Parade of Lights on Saturday, December 12.

Titan football boosters looking ahead to 2010
The Temescal Canyon High School Titan football season ended November 13 for the 2009-2010 season. It was emotional as the varsity seniors escorted their parents onto the field for their last ever Titan football game. Prior to taking the field, each parent was handed a letter written by their Titan player that was sure to draw many tears.

Bird-watching is a favorite pastime of residents
Throughout the year, The Friday Flyer receives many pictures of Canyon Lake wildlife, primarily birds. Some of the photographers send stories along with their pictures, such as the one ACC Inspector Marlon Johnson tells about seeing a red-tailed hawk perched on a pick-up truck’s hood.

Arts and Entertainment
This section features arts, entertainment and activities in Canyon Lake, as well as performance dates and locations where residents can enjoy and support entertainers who are Canyon Lake residents.

Movie Review: 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon'
Love sucks. Well, that’s what we learned last year from the vampires in “Twilight.” In this stunning sequel, we’ve progressed to an entirely new level. Love bites! We now have teen werewolves with more teeth than the entire Osmond family. Who let the dogs out? But, this is the best werewolf/vampire combo since Lon Chaney Jr. and Bela Lugosi.

Mom About Town: Black Friday a day to get out the red and green
I am rather in denial that the holidays are upon us. It ain’t easy to get in the spirit when the thermostat is reading 85 on most days! Sure, there have been a few cool days in recent weeks when the temperature has dropped. On the first chilly morning, I eagerly pulled the flannel sheets out of storage, put a pot of soup on to simmer and dreamed of crackling flames in the fireplace after sunset.

Day Tripping: Have an awesome beach day and a free lunch
Ah the beach. I love the smell of the ocean – a mixture of salt, brine and sand. Hard to describe, but most beach lovers know what I am talking about! The waves are soothing to me and the sand makes an excellent walking path. A day at the beach for me is relaxing, fun and therapeutic and can occur any time of the year because we live in Southern California!

Letter: Knight in shining armor
These are the times when I remember all the good things that have happened to me during the past year and even years past. Every year it makes me think about a Good Samaritan that came into my life for one day years ago. I had to refill my car with gas. It was a cold, dark, windy day ready to rain when I pulled into a local gas station. When I went to get back into the car after pumping the gas, the door was locked with my keys and purse still inside.

Letter: Front Yard Storage
The major problem with the Setback Committee’s recommendations was they were limited to the sole issue of a six-foot setback and not the overall concern of excessive front yard storage that impact property values. This has been the issue that residents have been raising concerns about for the past three years and was not addressed at the annual election.

Letter: Staying informed
I read with interest and curiosity David Carlton’s ad hominem attack on Travis Montgomery for staying informed about what is happening in his local community by attending City Council meetings.

Letter: Passing of Ruthe Lee
My dear friend, Ruthe Lee, passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, November 18. She was living in Tehachapi, California, near her daughter, Pam Miller.

Near and Far: Schiavis enjoy a reunion and a roam in Rome
Not much has changed in the past 55 years in the small town of Gallinaro, Italy, which is where Canyon Lake’s Community Patrol Manager Vince Schiavi grew up. His family moved away in 1954 but Vince always talked about going back to visit the town, as well as his mother’s hometown of Atina. He had been promising his wife, Mary, for 34 years that he would take her there and was finally able to fulfill his promise in September. They began their trip on September 1 and returned 29 days later.

In Memoriam: Robert Horton
Robert B. Horton, 77, passed away at Menifee Valley Hospital on November 13, 2009, where he had been hospitalized. His wife was by his side. He was born in Fresno, California, on April 3, 1932 and has resided in Canyon Lake for the last 16 years.

In Memoriam: Ruthe Lee
Longtime former resident Ruthe Lee passed away in her sleep on November 18, 2009 at her home in Tehachapi, California.

In Memoriam: Douglas Whiting
Douglas Mark Whiting passed away on November 12, at his home in Canyon Lake. Doug enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending time with family. He was a member of Canyon Lake Community Church and a former member of Sunridge Community Church.
