Golden day

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it might be easy to take the beauty of Canyon Lake for granted, but one person who doesn't is professional photographer Anthony Arendt. He not only captured this rare view of the dam framed by vividly colored scrub and trees, but also captured the first introduction of snow on distant peaks. Anthony hasn't been around much the last three years. To learn why, see his story: Arendt helps director fulfill vision for 'Avatar'

This Week's Official CLPOA News

Rain and runoff pose challenges for City officials
Rain is a welcome relief for most Canyon Lakers. It cleans the air, replenishes bone-dry soil, awakens grass and wildflower seeds on nearby hills and washes away accumulated dust and dirt. But residents who have lived here for any length of time know the challenges Canyon Lake faces when runoff from the area’s 700-mile watershed brings pollutants into the reservoir. Of special concern in recent years has been the runoff from septic tanks in neighboring Quail Valley.

Arendt helps director fulfill vision for 'Avatar'
Imagine a job that requires living in another universe. That’s what Canyon Lake resident Anthony Arendt has been doing the past three years as a virtual/live action camera operator for Director James Cameron’s epic new sci-fi blockbuster, “Avatar,” due to come out in 2D and 3D theaters today, December 18.

City Manager recognizes local hero
The “unnamed neighbor” mentioned in last week’s story about the December 5 fire on Loch Lomond Dr. is Jeff Baygent. On December 10, City Manager Lori Moss sent Jeff a letter stating, “You are the hero of the month. Thank you for rescuing the individuals in the fire last Saturday. Canyon Lake is an awesome community and even better with fine residents like you.”

Meet newly appointed Mayor Pro Tem Barry Talbot
At the Canyon Lake City Council’s final meeting of the year on December 2, Barry Talbot was elected by a vote of 4-0 to serve as mayor pro tem. Nancy Horton was elected mayor. Both were elected to the City Council in the 2008 election.

As the last two new pieces of furniture arrive at the Library the person responsible for overseeing the Library expansion sadly said good-bye. City Connection: Follow '4 Steps for Kids' for child safety
With everyone rushing around for the holidays, City Manager Lori Moss wants to pass on the following information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind residents how important it is to make sure their children are safe when they’re traveling in car seats.

Santa arrived on time for City tree-lighting
A small Christmas tree adorned with energy-efficient LED lighting was not quite grand enough to be the center of attention at the combined Chamber of Commerce and City tree-lighting ceremony on December 4 in front of City Hall. Nevertheless, with a chill in the air and the promise of Santa’s appearance, free hot chocolate and cookies, wine tasting, pasta dinner, entertainment and free hay rides, a significant crowd of local business people, City and POA personnel and residents showed up for a heartwarming celebration of the season’s advent.

Making a list, checking it twice
Santa Claus may not be coming to town for another week, but the Christmas spirit will be checked this weekend by the Home Owners Club and Yacht Club, who will be judging decorations for the annual Holiday Decorating Contest. Today is the last day to enter the contest, which can be done by e-mail.

Join contest for home and waterfront decorating
Residents are invited to participate in the Home Owners Club Holiday Decorating Contest by e-mailing the requested information on the form here and turning on displays Sunday, December 20, between 6 and 9 p.m., when Home Owners Club members will drive around the community looking for the best decorated homes. They will pay most attention to homes whose owners have submitted an entry. Today is the deadline to enter.

Don't call 911 on this 'dummy'
Getting their idea from an amusing photo making the rounds on the Internet, Dave and Maryann Molner decided to replicate this novel approach to Christmas decorations.

Christmas services at local churches
Following is a list of holiday events and Christmas services to be held by some of the local churches:

Arts and Entertainment
This section features arts, entertainment and activities in Canyon Lake, as well as performance dates and locations where residents can enjoy and support entertainers who are Canyon Lake residents.

Movie Review: 'Invictus'
“Invictus” is Latin for “invincible.” Sure, most Latin-Americans know that, but it was more than just a word to Nelson Mandela; and eventually to Francois Pienaar, South Africa’s rugby team captain. Producer/director Clint Eastwood effectively presents these very dissimilar lives, now forever linked in the world of sports, politics and nation building.

Day Tripping: Visit 'new' Old Town Temecula this season
On a recent trip to Old Town Temecula, a one-stop shopping trip turned into a daylong trip exploring all of the “new” Old Town places, as well as some of the old!

Mom About Town: Fun family traditions create holiday memories
Talking with a friend the other day, we got onto the subject of unique family traditions around the holidays. She laughed as she recalled waking up on Christmas mornings as a little girl to a loud, “Ho-Ho-Ho!” and the slam of the front door. Then her dad would call out, “Darn it, kids! You just missed him!” Years later, her own children awaken on Christmas mornings to the same happy sounds and they, too, miss seeing Santa by mere seconds.

Canyon Lake Ink: Tattoos a lasting testimony to love of family
Josh and Dayna Mayne, residents of Canyon Lake since 2007, have much in common that makes their marriage of five years such a success: a common love of off-roading, mutual adoration of 2-year-old daughter, Mylee, and a new-found appreciation of the art of tattoo.

Letter: Senior Center party
There were so many people that made the Senior Center Christmas Party such a huge success!

Letter: Stil collecting stuffed toys
Thank you for the beautiful tribute to our beloved Ellen Kellet in the December 11 issue of the The Friday Flyer. I do have one correction. King’s Daughters of Mountain View Community Church in Wildomar took over Ellen’s Stuffed Animal Project in January 2008.

Letter: Dog hit by car
On December 4, my two dogs got out – a chocolate lab and a yellow lab. I received a call from a resident stating she found our yellow lab but hadn’t seen our chocolate lab, “Bella.” We learned from the POA a dog was struck by a car, but the dog’s location was unknown.

Letter: Christmas decorations stolen
If residents passed by our house on the corner of Early Round Dr., I’m sure they enjoyed the display... Well apparently someone did, because they felt the need to steal some of our lawn ornaments.

Letter: Donations for Mackenzie
I wanted to thank everyone who was involved in the fundraiser for Mackenzie Monteleone. We’re still on a mission to raise money for Mackenzie to return to China for stem cell injections; every little bit helps. I had a child tell me he wanted to give his dollar and it warmed my heart. I thought about it and that little boy could have bought a candy bar but, instead, he gave it to Mackenzie’s fund.

Letter: Parade of Lights
As skipper of the Green Dragon for the Canyon Lake Yacht Club this year, I’d like to thank...
