Glory

A beautiful sunrise, such as the one captured by Dave Guthery, is proof the greatest gifts in life are free. The winter months are a good time to take pictures around Canyon Lake - when the sun is lower in the sky and clouds are more prevalent.

Rolling out the red carpet for Christmas
There are other holidays celebrated at this time of year, most notably Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year, but Canyon Lake is a town where Christmas is most celebrated for both its secular and spiritual meaning. Clubs especially take this holiday to heart, planning everything from boutiques, concerts and tree-lighting ceremonies to open houses, private parties and even a parade.

Parade of Lights small but mighty in spirit
“The weather was frightful, but the parade was delightful,” says Kelly Marich of the December 12 Parade of Lights, sponsored by the Yacht Club.

Holiday Decorating Contest winners announced
Between now and New Year’s Eve, it’s time to bundle up the kids, elderly parents, neighbors and even pets to take a cruise by car, golf cart and boat through the community’s streets and waterways to see homes that have been decorated for the holidays. Those who turned in forms for the Home Owners Club’s Holiday Decorating Contest were judged last Sunday, December 20.

Christmas Celebration presented for community
Canyon Lake Bible Fellowship (C.L.B.F.), a newly sanctioned Canyon Lake club, held its first community outreach on Thursday, December 17, at the Lodge. The members of the club volunteered their time and talents to bring residents “the real meaning of Christmas” and all of its beauty during this special and magical time of year, according to Chairman Steve Martin.

Here's a collection of 'Holiday Ho Ho Ho'
Among the best uses of the Internet is the distribution of humorous messages and cartoons and Christmas is no exception. Here are a few from seasons past.

New completion date set for Longhorn roadwork
The completion of the Longhorn Dr. Road Project might have been considered a Christmas present for residents living along Longhorn Dr. – or at least the end to a long nightmare before Christmas.

City Connection: Coffee With the Mayor
Residents are reminded Mayor Nancy Horton is beginning to host “Coffee With the Mayor” on the last Tuesday of each month, beginning December 29, at 10 a.m. at the Surfer Bean in the Canyon Lake Towne Center (next to the Canyon Lake Market).

H.O.P.E. gets 'a lift' from Rotary Club donation
The Lake Elsinore Rotary Club donated 20 carts to Helping Our People in Elsinore (H.O.P.E). The community pantry distributes USDA Commodities, a government funded program, once a month to local needy families. The distribution takes place on the second Saturday of the month and, this year alone, they have distributed 102,055 meals, according to Mary Brown of the Rotary Club.

Water district employees adopt families to help
The Adopt A Family program was started many years ago by Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District staff members who wanted to give back to the community. The tradition includes voluntarily donating funds through payroll deduction throughout the year; then using the funds to purchase gifts for needy families during the holidays.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Avatar'
Producer/Director/Writer James Cameron suffers from “bear on a bicycle” syndrome; we expect him to do anything. It’s been 12 years since he created “Titanic,” the most successful movie of all time. Now, his long awaited “Avatar” is a sumptuous feast for the eyes. It is easily the best movie of the year and whichever is second is not even close.

Notes from a road once taken: Road tripper remembers New England yuletide
It was the winter of 1976, a few days before Christmas, and creeks, ponds and some ocean waves were quite frozen. Old timers, looking back, opined that it was the coldest, snowiest, iciest winter in recent memory. Driving along in the middle of it in our motor home, we thought so, too, at the time.

Mom About Town: Enjoy unexpected gifts from the mouths of babes
One of the best gifts I ever received was a mother’s journal. My friend, Tracy Urban, gave me one for my daughter (she assisted with her birth), and suggested writing down all of the wonderful little things she says and does, and then giving my daughter the journal full of memories when she is grown.

Letter: Amazed by wife's strength
On August 4, our lives changed forever when our 22-year-old son, Lincoln, died unexpectedly. I’ve been amazed with the strength and grace with which my wife, Corrie, handled this devastating loss. She began with planning the best possible service with approximately 400 family and friends (thanks also to Pastor Gary Ennis and Lamb’s Fellowship).

Letter: A Christmas wish
My friend Diane Fuess’ husband, Bob, has been in the hospital and now is in a long-term care facility since October. Bob cannot speak because of a tracheotomy.

Letter: Cotillion
Once again my wife Jennie and I were treated to the wonderful experience of attending the outstanding Cotillion event. What a terrific job Ed Strong does with these young boys and girls.

Letter: Thanks for support
On behalf of the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club, I would like to wish the Canyon Lake community and all of your families a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and a wonderful, healthy, prosperous New Year.

Letter: Fix the Lodge
I agree with what Richard Del Nostro, who wrote in The Friday Flyer regarding fixing our Lodge. He said to take out the stairway and move it elsewhere without taking up so much room.

Letter: Enforce current rules
The proposed changes regarding the setback requirement are complicated and will create problems in the future.

Letter: Grinch stole Christmas
Twas a couple of nights before Christmas and all is not well.
