County gets go-ahead to complete Newport Rd.
The long-awaited completion of “new” Newport Rd. is about to become a reality, according to Riverside Country Transportation Director Juan Perez, who made a presentation at Wednesday’s City Council meeting. The county successfully completed negotiations with the bonding company that had insured improvements to the road when Brookfield Homes and Woodside Homes originally began developing the area more than five years ago.

This is a big weekend for Santa, snow and more

Fundraisers are underway for injured child
The Farmers’ Market, local businesses, New Hope Church, vendors and Grower’s Choice Garden Center in Wildomar have banded together to help raise money for the Mackenzie Monteleone benefit fund. A gift basket fundraiser supported by local businesses and vendors continues. The baskets will be on display and tickets will be sold at the Farmers Market through December 13, when the winners will be announced.

Calling all boats to join the Parade of Lights!
The 2009 Parade of Lights is now just one week away on Saturday, December 12. There still is time to fill out the official entry form and submit it in advance, which would be helpful and very much appreciated by the Yacht Club. However, according to spokesperson Dennis Pitts, “If you really are a last minute person, you can bring your decorated boat to the start of the parade near the Eastport Launch Ramp just before the parade starts and there will be someone there to get you signed up.” There is no fee to enter.

Food needed for H.O.P.E., toys needed for kids
The City of Canyon Lake is asking residents to help fill the shelves at Helping Our People of Elsinore (H.O.P.E.) by picking up grocery bags at City Hall and buying the groceries recommended on the attached list. Toys are also being collected for the Spark of Love Toy Drive, sponsored by Riverside County Firefighters. New unwrapped toys can be dropped off at Fire Station 60.

Gift drive for children
Several local businesses are supporting the non-profit agency, Victor Community Support Services, for a holiday gift drive for children.

Nativity collection finds a temporary home
Every time Leti Shores moved over the last 16 years, she carefully wrapped up the baby Jesus from Spain that her mother had given her as a gift in 1974. Since there was no place for the “little Lord Jesus” to “lay down his sweet head,” she used a small fruit basket as a manger.

Get a head start on mailing holiday packages
As holiday shoppers wrap up their Black Friday purchases and prepare them for shipping, the United States Post Service (USPS) and other shippers are preparing to handle the holiday load. The USPS is preparing to deliver 826 million pieces of mail during the holidays and FedEx expects to deliver 13 million packages, while United Parcel Service (UPS) is expecting to ship 22 million packages worldwide.

Leo Biller's 1970 Olds named 'Car of the Month'
The Canyon Lake Car Club’s November Car of the Month is Leo Biller’s 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass SX convertible, a model that was made only two years and is the same platform as the 442, including the 455 cu. in. 365 hp motor.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Precious'
“Precious” is the most frightening and repulsive horror picture of the year. The raw and disgustingly monstrous characters would seem as comfortable in Zombieland. Set in 1987 Harlem, Claireece Precious Jones is a morbidly obese 16-year-old functional illiterate who is pregnant for the second time by her own father. She is relentlessly abused, emotionally and physically, by her angry and maniacal welfare mother.

Day Tripping: Try hot springs adventure, fault line hike
My first experience with “hot springs” was in the Idaho wilderness, sitting in a rock lined, hot mineral pool that was flowing into a cold river below. California’s version of natural mineral hot springs can be found just 75 miles away in Desert Hot Springs, right across I-10 from Palm Springs. Take the Palm Dr./Desert Hot Springs exit.

Mom About Town: For cookie gifts, 'many hands make light work'
A cookie exchange party is like a baking magic trick: bake up a few dozen of one type of cookie and magically transform them into a spectacular assortment of different goodies! And when the neighbors gasp in admiration of the cookie plate you deliver to their door, gushing about the variety and your obvious skill in the baking department, you can just shrug and smile and skip back to your house feeling only a little bit guilty.

Cook's Corner: With coffee or in a gift tin, biscotti's a hottie
Driving along I-15 this past week, I looked at the peaks west of Lake Elsinore and did a double-take. Were those mountains or giant mounds of brown sugar? I shook my head to clear the sugary mirage from my mind. The awaited time had come. I needed to head home, pull out my cookie sheets and start on my holiday baking.

Teen Talk: Looking within is scary and uncomfortable
There is a war going on. It’s been going on the entire length of human existence without us even knowing it. How can that be when war is so obvious and affects everyone outwardly? This war does not involve armies. It does not involve ammunition. It does not involve money. It does not involve oil. It does not involve power. This war is taking place inside our minds. This war is robbing us of our true potential.

Letter: Thanksgiving thief
I was up with my baby at 2:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. I heard a vehicle and noticed a small dark truck with a toolbox in the back. The driver got out of the truck and I could see the tip of a lit cigarette walking towards my driveway.

Letter: Involved citizen
In the November 20 The Friday Flyer, former Canyon Lake resident David Carlton attacked Travis Montgomery for his interest in Canyon Lake by attending City Council meetings. I am familiar with Travis’ interest and involvement in Long Beach during his 63 years of work or residence in that city.

Announcement: Canyon Lake tennis players excel
This year’s girls’ tennis team from Linfield Christian School of Temecula was led by four Canyon Lakers who excelled deep into the playoffs, eventually losing in the CIF semifinals to View Point of Calabasas.

Announcement: Big bass
Kelly Jenkins’ cousin, Steve Swan, holds a 7.5 lbs. bass he caught recently in the cove off White Wake Dr.

Announcement: Cheerleaders unite for Unity Parade
Local cheerleaders have a lot of reason to jump for joy. The Temescal Canyon High School Cheer, as well as Lakeside High and Elsinore High cheerleaders teamed up for the Unity in the Community Parade and had 80 spirit leaders performing.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
With a month of holiday activities – public and private – planned throughout the community, the Property Owners Association has been busy putting up decorations at the Gates, Causeway, Lodge, Country Club and POA offices.

POA Calendar

Monday Night Football ends
Now that it’s December, the Country Club is changing its tune – from the whoops of football fans to the jingle of Christmas bells. Community Relations Manager Laurie Owen would like to thank all those who participated in Monday Night Pasta and Football last month and says everyone is welcome back for a big Super Bowl party on February 7.

Volunteers needed for Snow Day tomorrow
The POA invites high school students seeking community service hours to head to “the slopes” at Holiday Harbor tomorrow, December 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers will work at the top of the hill to help kids get on discs and at the bottom to catch them and take the discs back to the top.

Give gift of lessons
Here’s a great gift idea for Canyon Lake residents – lessons at the Tennis Courts or Equestrian Center!

Ideas wanted for spring computer classes
Canyon Lake computer enthusiasts are being asked to make suggestions for class offerings for the spring 2010 sessions, according to organizer Bob Mericle.

Feeling fa-la-la-blah?
For many people, the holidays represent a time for celebrations, reunions, traditions and joy. For others, the holidays represent something much different. Losing a loved one changes the holiday season for those left behind, particularly when it is the first holiday season without the loved one. This can be a time of great sorrow for the bereaved.

Christmas party planned
Everyone involved in water aerobics and chair volleyball is invited to a Christmas party on Tuesday, December 8, at 9:30 a.m. in the Pool View Room.

Lodge bar will be open Sunday
The Lodge will be back in the spotlight this weekend with two big events scheduled there: the Woman’s Club Home Tour Boutique/Christmas Tree Drawing and the Jr. Women’s Club/POA Tree-Lighting Ceremony. While enjoying these events, residents are invited to drop by the Lodge bar between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Buy tickets early for New Year's Eve gala
The Lodge will be the setting for a splendid New Year’s Eve extravaganza on Thursday, December 31; and, with only 250 tickets available, early reservations are recommended.

ACCording to the ACC: Setback definitions
The CC&Rs call for front, side and rear setback restrictions for all lots. Each numbered lot also includes a Community Setback, defined as the area between the curb line and the front line. The depth of this setback varies between 4 and 22 ft., depending on the width of the street in front of the lot.

Senior Center Activities: Reserve a spot for next week's Christmas dinner
Seniors are reminded they shouldn’t stay home alone this holiday season. All are invited to the free Christmas dinner-party that will be held Sunday, December 13, at 5 p.m. at the Senior Center. This festive occasion is free; however, the party is limited to the first 80 people who make reservations.
