Serenity

A lone fisherman, visible through the foliage of Bob Givens' backyard, basks in the glow of a Canyon Lake sunrise, the sereneness of the moment broken by nary a ripple on the Lake's placid surface, which mirrors the jeweled hues of the painted sky. Bob captured this quiet moment of reflection from the back deck of his Big Range home. |

Hillside ordinance a step closer to passing
Step outside and what do you see? Chances are good some part of your Canyon Lake vista includes at least one hill, maybe more. Most homes here are built on hills – although for many, the hilly contour disappeared under an earthmover’s blade more than four decades ago. Around the perimeter of the community, some hills and ridgelines already have been impacted by development and some still rise in a fairly natural state.
Hillside and Ridgeline Overlay map
If adopted, the City’s Hillside and Ridgeline Ordinance would pertain only to those properties specifically contained within the identified Hillside Overlay Areas, which are seen in the crosshatched sections of the map.
Cities reach agreement on commercial center
A mutual settlement agreement approved by the Canyon Lake City Council last Thursday officially put an end to a lawsuit filed by Canyon Lake against Lake Elsinore regarding the location of an equestrian trail in a proposed commercial center that will abut Canyon Lake’s North Gate. The settlement, which was approved by the Lake Elsinore City Council at its meeting on January 27, will place the trail crossing at the future location of Dowling Rd.
City Connection: Ordinance provides guidelines for development
Introduced at last Thursday’s meeting, City of Canyon Lake Ordinance No. 112 would add a chapter to the City’s Municipal Code regulating development on hillsides and ridgelines that, because of their topography, require special consideration to ensure they are developed in a way that “substantially maintains their natural character and environmental and aesthetic values” and to promote the goals and objectives of the City’s general plan, specifically with regard to open space.
City Connection: Kessler pleads guilty, sentencing set for May
On Tuesday, former Canyon Lake City Councilmember Frank Kessler pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement as part of a plea agreement that reduces his possible punishment from almost five years in prison to no more than 180 days in jail. City Connection: Warning signs removed
It’s okay to go back in the water. Warning signs posted February 10 in accordance with State of California Department of Health Services regarding possible contaminated water as a result of substantial runoff from the recent rains were removed on Monday, as test results indicated the Lake to be clear of any contamination. Residents can call the POA hotline at 244-6841, ext. 700, at any time for information regarding Lake conditions.
City Connection: City accepting bids for surplus equipment

The City will entertain bids from interested purchasers through noon on Wednesday, March 11. All items are sold as is, with no warranties of any kind, and are not available for inspection.
City Connection: Correction
In the February 13 issue of The Friday Flyer, an article regarding Councilmember Jordan Ehrenkranz’ recusal from discussion and voting on two hillside ordinances provided incorrect information concerning a loan he had made to KC Flooring, a business owned by Sky Blue principal Dave Carlton, and paid back through Hixavo Partnership, another of Dave’s holdings.

Looking Back: What happened in February of past years?
In February of 1974, the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club was actively forming a community Blood Bank to serve the needs of local residents and their families. The nearest medical facility was then the Lakeview Community Hospital off State Highway 71 (now Interstate 15) and Bundy Canyon. “Ernie’s,” a Mexican-American Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge, opened its doors next to the Canyon Lake Motel on Railroad Canyon Rd.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Rachel Getting Married'
“Hey, didn’t I see you on ‘Cops?’” That’s not exactly what you want to hear from a perfect stranger; or from anyone for that matter, especially if it’s true. But, poor Kym, a recovering addict, played with unqualified conviction (pun intended) by Anne Hathaway (“Princess Diaries”), is continually reminded of her troubled past by everyone she meets.

Letter: Weren't prepared in emergency
As new grandparents, we want to say a big “thank you” to our Canyon Lake Station 60 firefighters and the American Medical Response team in the Canyon Lake Towne Center who both came in record time – an unbelievable four minutes – to our emergency last Thursday night! Our grandson, Luke, who is 17 months old, suffered a febrile seizure (a seizure caused by a high fever) and went unconscious.
Letter: Hillside ordinance
I am writing this letter to thank the Canyon Lake City Council for moving forward with a long, overdue hillside building ordinance for our area. Our surrounding natural topography is a huge component of our property values and I am glad the Council is interested in protecting homeowners.
Letter: Roadrunner Park
According to The Friday Flyer, the POA is planning to go ahead with a restroom at Roadrunner Park. Because of the location of the park, they will also need to build a lift station. With summer approaching, will this become another Indian Beach fiasco?
Letter: Open house with Director Johnston
I have been deeply concerned that when the POA Open Community Forum meetings were cancelled in January, the POA Board and Staff lost a very important informal method of communicating with residents. I have said to a number of people that I would be hosting an open house on Tuesday. I have changed the location to my home at 22434 Loch Lomond Dr.

Two of Canyon Lake’s golf teams are going to the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) playoffs. Learn to golf
There are many residents who take advantage of one of the community’s most beautiful amenities – the Golf Course. But there are others who don’t – many because they simply don’t know how to play the game. Golf Pro Dave Lindeman would like to help Canyon Lakers solve that dilemma by offering a beginners’ golf clinic for women and a beginners’ clinic for couples.
From the Director's Chair: Welcome packet
For the new owners to Canyon Lake, the Association is in the process of creating a welcome packet. The Association would like to give the new residents an opportunity to learn about the community, understand some of the amenities and to provide some helpful information to new residents. The staff has created this in hopes of making new residents feel welcome and at home in the community.
ACCording to the ACC: Screening
Along with everything else these days, the cost of electricity has skyrocketed. The cost increase has led many folks to consider alternate sources of power. Some members have elected to install propane tanks and others have gone with solar panels.
