The Friday Flyer Editor The Friday Flyer was pleased to attend the opening performance of “The Diary of Anne Frank” on Thursday, January 30. Although the staff members in attendance are not experienced theater reviewers, they were deeply moved by the presentation and offer the following observations of the Canyon Lake Community Theatre show, produced by MaryAnne Stevens and directed by CoCo Morrison. To imagine a more depressing story in history would be difficult. Unfortunately, the play is based on a true story – one of many such incidents – that occurred during the Holocaust, when Jews were hunted and systematically killed by the millions during WWII. The depressing storyline might have been a deterrent to some people attending the show – and that's too bad. The actors in the CLCT production, most of them high school students, did an outstanding job depicting their characters and were very believable in an Americanized sort of way. That tears were flowing by the final scene is a good indication they did their job well. The two-level set, assembled just two days before the first show, captured the essence of the conditions under which eight people had to live in hiding for two years in a “secret annex” behind the walls of Mr. Frank’s business. The set was designed by Corky Post and built by Corky, Gary Bolton, Dwayne Fava, Steve Morrison and Lou Smith. The sound system was good, making it easy to hear the actors’ words; the lighting complemented the somber, yet sometimes lighthearted, scenes. Ilene Moore provided tech direction and Corky and Mark Stevens made up the tech crew, with Tony Candeleria operating the soundboard. Other behind-the-scenes helpers included translator Tammy Adler, stage manager Jennifer Ward, costumes Jolie Wagner, prop mistress Breezy Collingwood and programs and tickets Sue Collins. Canyon Lake Community Theatre has announced the following shows for the coming year: “Godspell” on May 14 to 17; the children’s play, “WipeOut,” on July 23 to 26; My Fair Lady” at Indian Beach on September 24 to 26 and October 1 to 3; and another children’s play, “Dear Edwina,” on November 13 to 15.
