Simple things

Though photographers often touch-up their photos in order to create the perfect image, this gilded sunset scene captured by Jen Kerker at Sunset Beach needed nothing but Mother Nature's touch to achieve flawless beauty in its simplicity.

This Week's Official CLPOA News

Small pest poses big threat to community's lake
The saying goes that “big things come in small packages.” In Canyon Lake’s case, though, the saying takes on a much more sinister connotation when applied to one of the biggest threats facing the community and the future of its namesake Lake, which, if it were to take hold, could devastate the Lake and its ecosystem more completely than an extended drought or runoff from Quail Valley septic tanks.

Enjoy 'Music Classics' at Lodge tomorrow
Canyon Lakers can look forward to an evening of “Music Classics” at the Lodge tomorrow as the Fine Arts Guild hosts the Inland Valley Symphony, directed by Jeanine Trent. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased in advance at the POA Member Services desk or at the door. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.

City Connection: Juvenile crime and its penalties
Juvenile crimes can affect more than just the victim; they can affect the juvenile’s parents and/or guardians, too. Most crimes committed by juveniles are minor, such as petty theft (under $400 in value), vandalism or fighting amongst their peers. You might be surprised how quickly vandalism (graffiti) can add up to a felony (over $400 in value) and result in up to a $10,000 fine.

City Connection: Scavenger hunts aren't just for kids anymore
Scavenging through Canyon Lake residential bins and barrels has become a business for some people, and a major headache to the rest of us. We could blame the poor economy; people may be desperate for extra cash from cans and bottles to pay their bills. Or, worse perhaps, there are those people who scramble through residential trash and recycle barrels to gain access to personal information for identification theft and all that it entails.

City Connection: Police Blotter
The Canyon Lake Police Department arrested two men on suspicion of vehicle theft Monday morning during a routine traffic stop. A second passenger in the vehicle, a juvenile female, was released to her parents.

City Connection: CLEPC meeting next Thursday
The next meeting of the Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee (CLEPC) is scheduled for next Thursday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m. in Blue Bird Hall. According to Nancy Carroll, the meeting will include a fun and exciting team-building exercise led by Jason Maddy, an instructor at Mt. San Jacinto College.

City Connection: 'Cat in the Hat' bounces into Canyon Lake Library
Canyon Lake kids were delighted by the Cat in the Hat, also known as Ginny Furnish, when she infused life into the Dr. Seuss classic last Friday for pre-school story time. According to Mary Munson of Friends of the Library, everyone had a great time and all are looking forward to the next story time, scheduled for Friday, April 3, at 11 a.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room.

City Connection: WeTip can help fight CL crime
A lot of work goes into being named Riverside County’s safest city, but Canyon Lake has consistently been ranked as such, based on the annual FBI Uniform Crime Index. Residents play a large part in that success by being vigilant against criminal activity in and around their neighborhoods and the CLPD wants to remind them they have a powerful ally in WeTip.

City Connection: News and notes
The Canyon Lake City Council holds regular meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Services Building Boardroom. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1. The meetings are televised on Time Warner Cable channel 29 as well as streamed live on the web on www.cityofcanyonlake.com.

Chamber Notes
Canyon Lakers are invited to attend the next monthly Chamber luncheon, scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, at 11:30 a.m. at Pepe’s, when the seven candidates vying for the Canyon Lake POA’s three open Board seats will take part in a Candidates Forum. Residents will be able to hear the candidates discuss their platforms as well as answer questions about specific issues facing the community.

Political signs going missing
It has come to the attention of at least two candidates running for the POA Board of Directors that their signs are being removed illegally. Michelle Gordon and David Johnston say their signs near the Main Gate and East Gate have disappeared. At the recent Board meeting, the Board of Directors approved the posting of political signs in the community setback as early as 60 days prior to the election.

Art on the Green next week
Canyon Lake artists Marge Wicen, Joanie Evarts, Christy Bruce and Dolly Wilson are among those who are looking forward to the Art Association’s first major event of the year – Art on the Green – to take place at the Country Club on Sunday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What is an 'Eco Drive?'
It’s a way to get rid of old TVs, computers, laptops and monitors. It’s a way to raise money for a free after-school program that benefits youths of the community. It’s on Saturday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Workshop children getting Hollywood exposure
Several Canyon Lake kids have had positive Hollywood experiences since taking advantage of the acting workshops offered by residents Corky and Bobbie Pigeon. The couple will be holding their next free “On Camera Commercial, Acting and Modeling” workshop at Pepe’s Restaurant in the Towne Center on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. The minimum age for children is 4.

See 'Fiddler Jr.'
Canyon Lake Middle School students are preparing for their 7th annual school-wide musical, “Fiddler on the Roof, Jr.” The curtain will rise at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4. Tickets can be purchased at Canyon Lake Middle School beginning Monday, March 30. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.

Theater is a venue to inspire and motivate
Educators at Temescal Canyon High School are looking beyond the smell of the grease paint and the thrill of applause and are using the power of theater as a venue to inspire students and motivate them to evaluate many aspects of their daily lives, according to TCHS Drama Teacher Tara Miller.

Golf Club members soon can set tee times online
Members of the Men’s and Women’s Golf Clubs soon will have the opportunity to reserve their tee times on the Internet, thanks to the efforts of webmaster Tim Brown and the website www.clgolf.org. The user-friendly website has a link labeled “Tee Times” that will allow players to enter their SCGA number, select players in their party and send the request to the Pro Shop.

Coast Guard member helps to keep drugs at bay
Unlike most wives, when Wendy Williams kissed her husband Matt and sent him off to work after Christmas with a kiss and a wave goodbye, she didn’t see him again until this week. His job with the United States Coast Guard drug enforcement crew took him to the waters off Central America. Matt is a Food Service Specialist 1st Class in charge of food services aboard the Coast Guard Cutter and has also undergone training on the smaller pursuit boat.

Looking Back: What happened in March of past years?
In 1974, Canyon Lake was six years old. The Fireside and Lakeside Rooms of the Lodge were the scenes of numerous banquets, plays, parties, dances, lunches, dinners and even weddings. The Quail Valley Volunteer Fire Department was called to take care of various community emergencies such as flooding and fires.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Duplicity' and 'Knowing'
In this double feature, Julia Roberts stars in a role made for this returning leading lady. And, Nicholas Cage again disappoints the serious critics, but wins over the masses.

Community Cuisine: Columnist asks, 'What about the Lighthouse?'
It’s almost spooky walking through the Lodge these days. The silence in that once vibrant place is oppressive. Oh yes, when community and club events occupy the Holiday Bay Room the lights come up and the bar brightens its little corner; but the restaurant and its state-of-the art kitchen remain dark. Caterers now fulfill the food service role once provided by the comatose Lighthouse Restaurant.

In Memoriam: Kathy Healey
Katherine (Kathy) Healey, 42, entered into eternal life on Sunday, March 22, 2009 with her loving family at her side.

In Memoriam: Sally Magill
Sarah Frances “Sally” Magill passed away at her Canyon Lake home on March 21, 2009.

Letter: Wants to hear from youth
As a property owner in Canyon Lake, I would like to ask the young ones in our community under the age of 17 – and hear in their own voice – what they would like to see changed in Canyon Lake if they had a voice in the community. My own grandchildren call me Grandma Rita.

Letter: Drip irrigation saves water
When I read the March 13 article in The Friday Flyer I was disappointed not to see drip irrigation as one of the ways to conserve water. Being that I do work for a drip irrigation company and live on the Lake, I, too, am concerned. I have seen the Lake very low with water many times. I am not writing for a sales pitch.

Letter: Surrounded by love
My husband, Wayne Canfield, has been diagnosed with brain cancer. A portion of the brain tumor was removed Sunday, March 15, at Scripps La Jolla. He is facing radiation and chemotherapy to keep the cancer from spreading. I would like the Canyon Lake community to know of the wonderful and generous people who live here.

Letter: Generous donation
As a member of the Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee (CLEPC), I would like to thank a fellow Canyon Laker and business owner who is no stranger to disaster. David Garcia, owner of Canyon Fitness, whose business is currently undergoing repairs from fire damage, has generously donated $200 to support the CLEPC.

Letter: Plan to attend concert
The Inland Valley Symphony, appearing here at Canyon Lake tomorrow evening, has reached a higher degree of performance and notoriety since their last appearance at Canyon Lake three years ago.Exuberant at the podium and aggressive at recruiting talent, Director Jeanine Trent has won good reviews for recent performances.

Letter: Sunken van
Many people have responded to me sympathetically after reading an article in the March 6 The Friday Flyer (“Sunken van draws helpers to Launch Ramp”). However, they have the impression I was repositioning the van when it began to slide backwards into the Lake.

Seven candidates run for Board of Directors
There will be seven names and three propositions on the ballot this year when the Canyon Lake POA holds its Annual Meeting and Election. Five men and two women are vying for the three positions available on the Board of Directors for the 2009 to 2011 term. The following introductions to candidates were taken from the resumes they filed with the Association last week. They are listed in the order they will appear on the ballot as determined by an official lottery.

Equestrian Center to offer Horse Camp in April
During spring break the POA will sponsor its popular Horse Camp for kids. Boys and girls can enjoy learning about horses April 6 to 9 at the Equestrian Center, with the fun taking place from 9 a.m. to noon each of the four days for a cost of $100. There is no need for students to have a horse to sign up, since horses normally used for lessons are available.

Enjoy spring break special at the Campground
There is a “Spring Break Special” at the Campground that will continue through April 20. Residents are invited to enjoy Happy Camp four nights and pay for only three, or stay seven nights and pay for only five. “The weather is nice and it’s a great time to take advantage of the Campground before the hot and busy days of summer,” says Campground Manager Dwight Cogdill.

Computer classes begin in April at Senior Center
For residents of all ages who desire a convenient way to expand their knowledge of computers and various applications, the POA is offering a new schedule of computer classes, beginning in April. Classes will be held at the Senior Center. They are limited to eight students and are open to all residents.

Welcome packets available
Member Services Manager Lynn Jensen is pleased to announce the POA is offering “welcome packets” to those who have recently purchased property in the community. Included in the packet is a welcome letter from General Manager Clint Warrell, a map of Canyon Lake and pages of helpful information regarding such POA amenities as the Golf Course and Pool, community clubs, the City’s Emergency Preparedness Committee and more.

From the Director's Chair: It's still 'a bit of paradise' despite issues
When I first sat down to write this article I wanted to write about our “Little Bit of Paradise;” but then I opened The Press Enterprise local section and again I have to read another negative article about Canyon Lake. This has not been our best year – Councilman and wife arrested; Councilman sued by fellow Councilpersons; Councilman fined by City for inappropriate sex related show at business; POA sued over use of dredge; POA and City involved in lawsuit over the use of the Lake.

ACCording to the ACC: Seawalls
Since the Shore-zone property (the strip of property surrounding the Lake) is leased by the Association from EVMWD, the applicant is actually seeking approval to install and maintain improvements upon the Association’s leasehold. As a result, the Architectural Control Committee may consider factors beyond the criteria normally applied by the ACC when considering applications for improvements located entirely on the applicant’s lot.
