East Bay

It's just another beautiful day in the bit of paradise known as Canyon Lake in this photo taken of the East Bay by regular contributor Bert Barbay. Cottony clouds tinged with a hint of purple-gray skate across the sky, propelled by the same brisk breeze that ripples the impossibly blue Lake in a scene shot just after the last rains - and well before the sweltering temperatures experienced this past week. |

City Connection: Crimes of opportunity can be prevented by simply locking up
Spring is here and the weather is beginning to get warmer. Many thefts that occur this time of year are crimes of opportunity. 'Kelly's Bistro' is fresh idea on Lodge dining
There might be hope for the Lodge dining facility after all! To replace the Lighthouse Restaurant, some POA Directors and a few candidates for the Board have recommended that the facility be leased to a restaurant professional. Several restaurateurs have expressed an interest in this concept, including Canyon Laker Kelly Kingman who has proposed that the vacant restaurant space be replaced with “Kelly’s Bistro.”

What government's stimulus bill means to you
The 2009 economic stimulus bill President Barak Obama signed into law on February 17, 2009, is a whopper, not only in cost ($787 billion) and length (1,070 pages), but also in terms of the vast number of spending and tax-relief programs it touches – everything from multi-billion dollar infrastructure investments to business tax cuts to small increases in unemployment benefits.
Be alert to potential presence of termites
The following information is provided by Joe Kaegi, a representative of Terminix of Southern California, who says termite swarm season has hit Canyon Lake. These are the answers to frequently asked questions.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'State of Play'
What did they know and when did they know it? In the spirit of “All the President’s Men” (1976), investigative reporters dig down the deep throats of politicians while they follow the money to corrupt big business. The Congressmen don’t reveal their political party, so it’s more difficult to figure out early in this movie whether they’re guilty or not.
Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Not so terrible...
Several members of the Canyon Lake Roadrunners recently took an RV trip to Pahrump, Nevada, where they stayed at Terrible’s Lakeside RV Park. “We ate many meals together, held contests in golf and peddle boat racing, gambled, did some sightseeing and sometimes just relaxed,” says John De Young, whose wife, Lou, is pictured holding The Friday Flyer.
Announcement: Cal Poly Pomona concrete canoe champion
Over spring break, Canyon Laker Danielle Libring represented Cal Poly Pomona in the U.S. Western Region Annual Civil Engineering Conference in Hawaii. Eighteen universities from California, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada attended the conference.
Announcement: TCHS top athlete
Heidi Hauser, daughter of Eric and Kathy Hauser, was named 2009 “Athlete of the Winter” season at Temescal Canyon High School. The 16-year-old is co-captain of the girls varsity soccer team and won out over all players in four sports, including boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, girls water polo and wrestling.
Letter: Wants independent thinkers
Everyone wants change; I don’t think it would be in our best interest to reelect someone who sends mixed messages on issues. I have questions about Mr. Johnston’s ability to govern from our Board. Last year there were frequent articles recognizing the terrible conditions of our Golf Course, all attributed to the contractor responsible for the maintenance of the Golf Course.
Letter: Taco Tuesday catering
I noticed in last week’s paper that the POA was looking for an outside caterer to run Taco Tuesday at the Lodge. I asked a friend who is running for the Board why the Country Club wouldn’t handle this event. She told me she would find out the reason. She told me the reason is they would need a staff of 15 people. What! This is why we lose money on our foodservice operations, and why the Lodge is closed.
Letter: Three candidates of choice
The Property Rights Committee – Question: Who are they? Answer: They are exactly what the name implies. We are the people working to make this community a better place, who are at present asking you, the voter, to vote for our chosen candidates who, if elected, will do just that. Why wasn't the dredge project investigated thoroughly? This is just one of the costly mistakes the present and past Board of Directors have made.
Letter: Questions about candidates
Sometimes it’s what they don’t say that is more important. I would like to see the candidates publish their feelings regarding each of the following: John Zaitz and several of the other candidates did not mention the Goat Hill controversy, the setback issue, the Lodge Restaurant, the proposed East Bay redevelopment project, the new restrooms at Roadrunner Park and the future proposal for dredging of the East Bay.
Letter: Caution advised
Our five-member Board is empowered as the decision making body for all POA members. A simple majority is all that is needed to either pass or reject a Board agenda item. I’m concerned about an apparent alliance with three of this year’s candidates. A Board of Directors where three of the five members have “teamed up” could be disastrous. I recently received an advertisement from the Property Rights Committee emphasizing three candidates.
Letter: Theater benefactors
Canyon Lake Community Theatre wants to thank all our Benefactors for their previous support in making dreams come true for our community. On May 16, all our 2009 benefactor will be receiving a dinner show ticket for our benefactor show “Godspell.” Many of you are not aware that this fall the Moonlight Theatre under the stars at Indian Beach will be reopening.

Fiesta Day - as American as apple pie!
Although nachos, bratwurst and pizza will no doubt be served at Canyon Lake’s annual event marking the beginning of summer, apple pie has been enjoyed by Americans since the days of the early colonists and, as such, gave rise to the expression, “As American as apple pie.” Therefore, in keeping with the patriotic Fiesta Day theme, “Small Town American Heroes,” the Fiesta Day Committee is promoting an old-fashioned Apple Pie Baking Contest. The entry form appears below.

From the Director's Chair: Pass and review
As an old adage states: Time goes fast when you’re having fun! This is true for me as the first year as a POA Director and the Treasurer comes to an end next month. It has been a privilege to work closely with the professional POA employees and have the opportunity to introduce innovative solutions for our community challenges.

ACCording to the ACC: Definitions
The CC&Rs call for Front, Side and Rear Setback restrictions for all lots. Each numbered lot also includes a Community Setback, defined as the area between the curb line and the front line. The depth of this setback varies between four and 22 feet, depending on the width of the street in front of the lot.
