Go fly a kite!

While adults may fume and fret over a stalled real estate market and an economy spiraling out of control, the simple pleasures of life are still free to enjoy, especially for those who live in the "bit of paradise" called Canyon Lake. Take time to enjoy it. |

This Week's Lead Stories
This Week's Official CLPOA News
Spring cleaning, Lake clean-up and eco-drive tomorrow
It’s the day clean-freaks, pack-rats and spring-cleaning homeowners have been waiting for – the day when old mattresses and outdated couches and non-functioning computer parts can be tossed; the day when garages finally achieve their true purpose in life as a place to park the family car. It’s Community Clean-up Day – tomorrow, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Canyon Lake Community Church parking lot.
City budget is on target
As the City of Canyon Lake nears the end of the 2008-09 fiscal year on June 30, City Manager Lori Moss says City staff and City Council are working hard to make sure the budget is balanced and essential City services and programs remain intact. Typically, Lori explains, the City performs a mid-year budget review in January, but because the state budget wasn’t approved until late February, City finances were examined after eight months rather than the normal six.
City Connection: Police Blotter
A minor non-injury collision that occurred Monday afternoon resulted in traffic congestion along Railroad Canyon Rd. for a short time while the drivers exchanged information. According to Lt. Danny Feltenberger, the department received a call regarding the accident at approximately 2 p.m., which occurred between a gold Lincoln Navigator and a white Ford Explorer near the entrance to the Canyon Lake Country Club.
City Conection: CLEPC monthly meeting, training classes planned
Upcoming events for the Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee (CLEPC) include the next monthly meeting on Thursday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m. in Blue Bird Hall, with the guest speaker discussing identity theft. The group also is taking sign-ups for two upcoming classes, both of which will be held in the City Multi-purpose Room.
City Connection: Check out Farmers' Market for unique gift ideas
Still trying to find that perfect Mother’s Day gift? According to Deirdre Darrow, a Pampered Chef consultant and regular Canyon Lake Farmers’ Market vendor, Canyon Lakers can find more than just veggies each week at the Market. “There is a wide array of items to make your mom feel appreciated, cherished and loved!” she says.
City Connection: News and notes
The Canyon Lake City Council holds regular meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Services Building Boardroom. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6. The meetings are televised live on Time Warner Cable Channel 29. Verizon FiOS customers can now watch meetings on Channel 39.
Chamber Notes
The Chamber’s regular monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, May 13, at 11:30 a.m. in the banquet room of Pepe’s Restaurant. A representative from the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District will be the afternoon’s guest speaker. The cost of the luncheon, which is open to everyone, is $12; reservations are required and must be made no later than Monday, May 11.
City plans for Water Summit 2009
Residents of Canyon Lake don’t have to look far to see what role water plays in their lives. With nearly 15 miles of shoreline, the 383-acre Lake is a constant reminder of just how important a resource water is. As the state suffers through a third year of drought and edges closers to mandatory water rationing, the City of Canyon Lake is taking steps to make sure its residents are prepared for what lies ahead.
Landscaping doesn't have to suffer in drought
When homeowners hear the words “drought” and “water restrictions,” often the first thing that comes to mind is, “How is my landscaping going to survive?” One of the biggest expenses of owning a home is the installation and maintenance of landscaping – grass, trees, flowerbeds, shrubs and the like.
Warnings and health tips issued on Swine Flu
The recent outbreak of swine flu has caused a great deal of concern across the nation and the world prompting the Centers for Disease Control to release safety guidelines for staying healthy. This week Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s response to the outbreak was sent to the City of Canyon Lake via Mark Bassett, the Southern Region Administrator for the California Emergency Management Agency.
'Fabulous Fifties' fashion show is just swell
The sounds of Elvis and the beauty of Marilyn Monroe added to this year’s fun-filled fashion show, “The Fabulous Fifties,” according to Bonnie Carnagey, publicity chair for this year’s event. Those in attendance saw the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge transformed into a 1950s high school gym, decorated with crepe paper streamers and balloons, while guests were transported to the era of “Grease” and “Happy Days.”

For Mother's Day, why not help mom get organized
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, wouldn’t you like to show your appreciation in a way that’s more meaningful than buying your mom a box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers? Here’s a thought: Offer to spend a few hours helping to sort through your mom’s financial, legal and medical paperwork so she – and you – know where she stands and can take appropriate actions, if necessary.
Prom pictures wanted
It’s that time of year to send in favorite prom photos from the local high schools. Digital photos are preferred and can be sent to news@goldingpublications.com. Hard copy photos can be brought into The Friday Flyer office in the Towne Center. Please include the first and last name of the person providing the photo and which school is represented. The deadline for photos is May 11 at noon.
Spotlight on Seniors
The Friday Flyer wants to celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding Canyon Lake seniors graduating from local schools in June. Parents are invited to contact the paper regarding the academic, athletic and/or artistic accomplishments of their children, especially of high school and college seniors preparing to graduate. Information may be e-mailed to news@goldingpublications.com or brought to the office at 31558 Railroad Canyon Rd.
Arts and Entertainment
This new section in The Friday Flyer will feature arts and entertainment in Canyon Lake, as well as various performance dates and locations where residents can go to enjoy and support entertainers who are Canyon Lake residents. Tonight, a trip down memory lane is just a golf cart ride away if any of these popular radio songs bring back memories: "Daytripper," "Can't Help Falling in Love," "I'm a Believer," "Crystal Blue Persuasion," "Mellow Yellow" and "Born to Be Wild."
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Soloist'
When we see somebody in a state of despair, tortured by inner voices and deeply troubled by the world around them, we ask, “What’s so different about this guy?” But, this rumpled homeless man was once a gifted Julliard student. Now, living on the streets of skid row, the schizophrenic was apparently riding high in April, shot down in May.
It's Miller Time: Intolerance, fanaticism a dangerous combination
Sometimes something shocks me so badly or makes me so mad I am left speechless. However, in this case, I am so incensed by what I just read in the LA Times newspaper I have to voice my opinion about something so wrong – no, more like so offensively insane – that I have to address what was said! It’s just too bad I didn’t read it until after last week’s The Friday Flyer deadline.
Teen Talk: Fame alone is no reason to look up to someone
Who do you look up to? Just take a second, think it through and say who your role model is. Over coffee the other day, my friends and I were catching up over the latest this-and-that in our lives. We were discussing politics, romance and recent books we’ve enjoyed. All of a sudden I blurted out how I want to go to one of my favorite group’s shows later this summer – Pat Benatar. The table went silent.
School Daze: Parents, educators learn of school safety issues
Recently, the Riverside County School Boards Association offered educators and parents an eye-opening training in regard to school safety. Wayne Sakamoto, an expert in the field, spoke to the group of 80 present about the aftermath of the Columbine shootings. After outlining the culture of drugs, violence and gang-related activities that often appeal to youngsters as early as elementary school, Wayne offered a test to those present to see where they stood in picking up what is written on walls or drawn inside of school folders.
Announcement: 'Sophisticated' dancer
For local dancer Jocelyn Basham, Saturday, April 18, was a big day. She attended the Sophisticated Productions Dance Competition with her studio, Todd’s Backstage of Lake Elsinore. The competition took place at Polytechnic High School, home of Snoop Dogg and Cameron Diaz.
Announcement: Cougar Hockey three-peat
The Canyon Lake Middle School Cougar roller hockey team has won its third straight championship. The Temecula Valley Inline Hockey Association has held a middle school hockey league since 2006 and Canyon Lake was the only LEUSD middle school that participated against Temecula and Murrieta middle schools.
Letter: Out of the quagmire
Been thinking about past experiences here in Canyon Lake – busy enterprises, most unnecessary, special projects, personal agendas promoted by past Board members, ever-increasing homeowner assessments. What do we have to show for them? An uncomfortable, fireplace-in-front-of-hallway, unsocial, Beverly Hills-priced, small bar, echo chamber Lodge instead of the beautiful, comfy, reasonably priced restaurant/lodge we used to enjoy together, destroyed so the elite could separate itself from the rest of us or curtail competition for nearby restaurants.
Letter: Community Patrol doing its job
After reading a couple of letters complaining about Community Patrol having a “speed trap,” I can’t help but write a letter to these jerks. Do you realize how silly you sound? Have you noticed that Canyon Lake does not have sidewalks; therefore, we have children riding bicycles, skateboards, parents pushing strollers, other folks just out for a walk and golf carts using the road.
Letter: Thank you Treasurer Bonner
As relatively new Canyon Lake residents, my wife and I want to publicly acknowledge the outstanding job Director Bonner has done with the 2008-2009 POA Fiscal Year results. While many people and committees are responsible for the cost-cutting efforts and the sacrifices that have been required for 2008-2009, the final positive financial results are directly attributable to the leadership and commitment of Director Bonner in his position as POA Board Member and Treasurer.
Letter: Art on the Green
The Canyon Lake Art Association would like to thank the community for their endless support in attending our various art exhibits, especially the “Art on the Green” on April 5, held at the Golf Course. Our gratitude also to the Operations Department, which kept us comfortable with the sun shades and tables they provided; and to Loretta Dudziak and her staff for ice water and making sandwiches during their busy Champagne Brunch.
Letter: Fabulous event
On behalf of the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club and as chairman and co-chairmen of the Fabulous 50s Fashion Show, we would like to extend our thanks to the many businesses, members, friends and sponsors too numerous to mention for their generous support. Without them our fashion show would not have been possible.
Letter: Director Johnston responds
In response to Richard Messer criticizing my voting record on the Golf Maintenance Contract and Lodge, I will explain facts he is not aware of. Last year when the Golf Maintenance Contract came up for renewal, the Green Committee asked it be radically up-scaled, raising the cost from $600,000 to $900,000 (50 percent increase). At that time the economy was in a downturn and our residents were feeling the pinch.
Letter: Candidates served community well
I think it’s important for people to consider, as they vote for new POA Directors, whether or not they want a slate of candidates chosen by a group with an obvious agenda or whether they want individuals who are independent thinkers. John Zaitz and Chuck Whitehead have served this community well in past years and have a history and knowledge of this community and what it really needs.
Letter: Stimulate golf play
In Monday’s The Californian there was an article regarding the loss of play on many golf courses due to the economy. It spelled out many devices to stimulate play and income. I’m sending it to the CLPOA. For some reason, our POA believes when business is tanking, the solution is to raise prices. Last year they instituted the “pay all fees for annual golf membership up front” policy and deleted the “five-day annual membership” for “seven-day annual membership” as the only package available.
Letter: Thanks for caring
The family of Sue Bowen wishes to thank her many friends during her short illness for brightening her day with visits, flowers and cards. She said she didn’t know so many people cared. Sue was loved and will be missed by many, but what a great reunion in Heaven when she was called home.
Letter: Johnston Open House
As everyone knows, David Johnston has been deeply concerned that the “POA Open Community Forum” meetings were cancelled in January, saying POA Board and staff lost a very important informal method of communicating with residents. For the last two months he has hosted an “Open House” at his home. These were very successful – with the residents being present and able to ask questions and make suggestions.
Letter: An independent thinker
What do we look for ideally when voting for a candidate for our POA Board? A person of moral character. A person with common sense. A person who understands how a POA runs. A person who knows how to read and understand a financial statement and knows how to prepare a budget. A person who has the desire to listen to and represent the homeowners. A person who doesn’t stand to benefit financially from his or her Board position.

At its March meeting, the POA Board of Directors approved a change to the Board meeting policy that resulted in a change to the meeting schedule, switching it from the third Tuesday of the month to the first Tuesday of the month. This will go into effect with this month’s Board meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, May 5.

Phase II of Road Project to begin Monday
International Pavement Solutions (IPS) will begin the road construction portion of the Phase II Road Project on Monday, May 4. Construction will start on Longhorn Dr. at the Campground and move north in approximately 1,500-ft. increments, according to IPS Project Manager Ron Johnson.
Banquet celebrates efforts of committees
With volunteers being one of the single greatest resources of the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association, there were many to commend during the annual POA Committee Recognition event on April 27 in the Holiday Bay Room of the Lodge. Tables were festooned with wine carafe centerpieces containing flowers that were provided at a discount, some even donated, by Lake Elsinore Florist, along with ribbons and buttons bearing the POA voting slogan: 50(%) +1= Change.”
