Howdy neighbor!

Like many others at last Saturday's Fiesta Day, this friendly couple was all smiles in the “parade after the parade” of flag adorned golf carts that headed to the Lodge grounds for a day of food, shopping and entertainment. Additional Fiesta Day photos can be found throughout this issue. |

Familes invited to inaugural Water Summit
Water conservation is much in the news these days. From the earliest grades in school, children are being taught to turn off faucets and do their part to conserve water – that’s why kids aren’t being left out of tomorrow’s Water Summit in the Towne Center, sponsored by the City of Canyon Lake and Property Owners Association.
Shredding event tomorrow
A shredding service will be offered during tomorrow\\\'s Water Summit. For a $2 donation for each trash bag or copy paper-size box brought in, the proceeds of which will benefit the Canyon Lake Library, Document Security Solutions will shred all documents; there is no limit and no need to remove staples or paperclips beforehand.
'Try to remember' on Sunday
Take a trip down memory lane this Sunday, May 31, as the Canyon Lake Choraleers, under new director Gail Christensen, present "Try to Remember" at the Lodge Holiday Bay Room. The nostalgic presentation of favorite movie, musical and folk songs will begin at 4 p.m. The cost is $7 and includes refreshments of coffee, tea and cookies.
City Connection: CLPD announces checkpoint in City tonight
The Canyon Lake Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint and safety check tonight, May 29, on a major street within the City. The following information was provided by the department to help residents understand the reasons for checkpoints as well as to provide an explanation of how checkpoints work.
City Connection: Triple treat at the Library
Canyon Lake kids were treated to a triple treat on May 25 with Ginny Furnish reading stories about elephants and why they are "not irrelevant." Afterward, she treated children to a Hokey Pokey dance session, accompanied by Bill Evans on the piano. The last part of the morning was devoted to crafts, with youngsters making elephant faces out of paper plates.
City Connection: News and notes
The last meeting of the Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee will be on June 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Blue Bird Hall. It is the group's last meeting until September. Members are invited to come and pick up their badges, learn what will be going on during the summer months and listen to guest speaker Robert De Groot. The public is invited and new members are always welcome.
Bosom Buddies create moving memorial to co-founder Cathy Zaitz in Fiesta Day Parade
Carolyn Knight was asked to write an article for The Common Ground, the national magazine of the Community Associations Institute. The editor of that publication had heard that Cathy Zaitz was being honored by the Bosom Buddies in the Fiesta Day parade and thought it would make a good feature article in a future issue. It is printed here for the benefit of Canyon Lake residents.

City of Canyon Lake well represented at Fiesta Day
Representatives of the City of Canyon Lake were out in force during the Fiesta Day Parade and festivities that followed at the Lodge last Saturday.
Chamber awardees and others take a ride in parade
Chamber of Commerce awardees who rode in the parade included Citizens of the Year Paul Chenette and Ed Strong, Volunteer of the Year Debby Gagnon, Youths of the Year Cort Pruett and Bailey Howe, Business of the Year Canyon Car Company, owned by Steve Newlin, and Senator John Benoit's Woman of the Year Lee Clark.

EVMWD to replace aging waterline on Longhorn
The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD) board of directors took action Tuesday evening at its special board meeting to approve a design contract with Albert Webb and Associates for the replacement of approximately 7,200 linear feet of old waterline on Longhorn Dr. from Appaloosa Dr. to Vacation Dr., according to EVMWD spokesperson Greg Morrison, director of legislative and community affairs.
School district tables proposed funding measure
The Lake Elsinore Unified School District recently opted not to place a local funding measure before property owners this month, despite substantial budget cuts due to the recession and state budget crisis. The board of trustees directed staff after a special meeting to table a proposal to establish a Recreational Improvement and Management District.
Host a student, have an international experience
Students from various countries are hoping residents of Canyon Lake will open their homes again this July and become a short-term host family for 28 days. Josie Rigden of EF Educational Homestay Programs (EFEHP), a non-profit organization says, “We would like to thank the families of Canyon Lake for hosting in 2008. Without the caring support of these families, EF would not receive the great evaluations from our students. All students had a fabulous time and enjoyed the family atmosphere of Canyon Lake.”
Here are common sense tips to protect identity and credit
A corporate attorney sent the following to employees in his company: 1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put “Photo ID required.” 2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, do not put the complete account number on the “For” line. Instead, just put the last four numbers.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian' and 'Terminator Salvation'
"Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" has a returning star, director and writing team, so what could possibly go wrong? Well, let's start with what went right. "Museum" is a wholesome, mildly amusing, family-friendly popcorn flick. It has some witty dialogue as well as a larger cast and a lot more special effects than its predecessor. There is nothing really wrong with all that, especially with so few alternatives for a family with younger children.
It's Miller Time: Election's over. Now, 'can't we all just get along?'
I’ve been gone for a couple of weeks, so when I came back the local election was over and I’m glad I missed the backbiting grand finale. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again . . . elections really bring out the ugly in people! Usually it’s a national or school board election when one political party slings mud at the other party, only to have them retaliate to defend themselves…each forgetting that the people they are so viscously attacking all want the same thing . . . to make their community a better place to live and raise their kids safely.
Letter: Failure of fence proposition
The lack of votes causing the failure of the CC&R change of the 5-ft. to 6-ft. fence height appears to me that Canyon Lake homeowners tacitly approve of “peeping Toms.” This 5-ft. fence limit rule clearly is to allow POA, snooping neighbors and perverts to spy on anyone they choose. Not only easier to spy, but the 5-ft. rule makes the fence easier to scale by those who may wish to do harm as well as large dogs.
Letter: Kids and golf carts
It’s summer time. The family golf carts are out more and I have seen a disturbing trend: parents holding infants and young children in their laps while driving! While there are many responsible families that put the child’s car seat in the cart and secure them properly, there are just as many of those that do not.
Letter: Learned a lot
I would very much like to thank everyone who supported me with the last election and even those who chose not to. My grandchildren inspired me to run (all 18 of them). I went in green; however, I enjoyed and learned a lot about running as a candidate and have respect for those who are brave enough to do so.
Letter: Fiesta Day Parade kudos
There are many people who made the Fiesta Day Parade the success that it was. Thanks to the scouts who carried flags and to banner carriers Emily, Angela, Madeline, Hunter, Scarlett and Madeline. Babette Stubbs and the Canyon Lake Car Club are instrumental in accommodating our dignitaries with classy convertibles every year. Thank you to all the drivers in this year’s parade.
Letter: Alleged boycott
Enough is enough. All the letters to the editor supporting Marty Gibson and purporting an alleged boycott of Pepe’s are getting a bit ridiculous. I was one of the coordinators of the Concerned Citizens and I never heard of any boycott of Pepe’s. This sounds like a political ploy to garner sympathy or the preamble for another frivolous lawsuit.
Letter: More on boycott
Please read and absorb what wise Ken Cable advised in the previous The Friday Flyer issue of letters to the editor. Do not comply with this cruel outrageous boycott of Pepe’s. We do believe this practice is being done as it comes from a reliable source. Marty Gibson has been and is one of the most generous contributors for all POA clubs and City fundraisers. This is well verified.

POA Agenda
Holiday Harbor turns into 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' tonight
Taking advantage of warm evenings and a lovely setting overlooking the Lake, Friday night Movie Nights at Holiday Harbor began two weeks ago and will continue twice a month through August. Families are invited to bring their own blankets, chairs and snacks. The movie to be shown tonight, May 29, at 8 p.m. will be “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” the fourth film in the Indiana Jones franchise.
Ever popular Taco Tuesday is back!
Fiesta Day got the party started. To keep it going through the summer months, Canyon Lakers are invited to enjoy Taco Tuesday each week from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lodge. Guests can look forward to cuisine catered by Taco Del Mar; music, games and Guitar Hero provided by Mike Shroyer of Good Time Entertainment and kids’ fun provided by ABC Bounce Company.
Sign up for swim lessons at the Pool
Sign-ups are being taken for summer swim lessons at the Pool. Lessons begin in June and will run for six weeks: June 15 to 19, June 22 to 26, July 6 to 10, July 13 to 17, July 20 to 24 and July 27 to 31. The half-hour sessions are Monday through Friday, 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. and 11 to 11:30 a.m. The price is $70 for the first child and $40 for each additional sibling or each additional session.
Exercise with Baby
The Exercise With Baby moms had fun pushing their strollers and representing the WWII icon, "Rosie the Riveter," in last week's Fiesta Day Parade. For its summer hours, the group now meets at Sierra Park Monday through Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Instructor Leslie Kahn invites all moms and kids with a sturdy stroller to give the class a try with a free week trial pass.
POA President provides rumored boycott response
There have been comments in The Friday Flyer, Letters to the Editor, making reference to a boycott of a business located in the Towne Center of the City of Canyon Lake (CL). As the President of the CL Property Owners Association (CL POA), I can unequivocally state that the basis for this purposely unfounded rumor is potentially damaging to our community. In response to the CL Chamber of Commerce, the Board of the POA would like to state publicly that we have no knowledge of any such boycott.
Barbecue provided for TWG and other guests
On Tuesday, members of the Tuesday Work Group were joined by members of the Thursday Work Group (Senior Center), POA Operations and Valley Crest to enjoy a barbecue at the Golf Course maintenance yard. Food was courtesy of the Senior Committee.
TWG is about teamwork, toil, camaraderie
Before their work season ends for the summer, Tuesday Work Group volunteers have been finishing projects around the Golf Course, including the cement crew’s project to repair a broken cart path that got undermined during the winter rains and the welding crew’s project to create and place a grate over a large drainage pipe on the 7th fairway. The cement crew earlier built the block wall surrounding the drainage pipe.
Controller's Report: Corporate office to go cashless, beginning June 1
As residents may have noticed in the airline industry and major corporations throughout the world, companies are moving to a cashless society. What does that mean to members of the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association? The corporate office no longer will accept cash for the payment of any of the services one would normally pay at the corporate office, such as assessments, permits, decals and registration for boats and golf carts.
ACCording to the ACC: Neighbors
Have you ever stopped to consider why you chose to live in Canyon Lake? I’m not talking about your frustrations with all the rules right now. I’m talking about what impressed you about the community in the first place. Was it the access to the Lake, Campground, Tennis Courts, Golf Course or Equestrian Center? Could it have been the locale? We are in such close proximity to the desert, mountain and beaches.
