Just because...

The name on Pat and Corrie Tutt's boat, "Just Because," may sum up their reasoning for planting this slope full of breathtaking blooms. And just because it's so beautiful, this photo by Linda Kamashian is The Friday Flyer's way of offering a bouquet of flowers to Canyon Lake moms on this Mother's Day weekend! Corrie says when she bought the 100-plus flats of groundcover for her slope two years ago, she could only hope it would look as beautiful as it does this spring. Husband, Pat, and son, Landon, initially planted the small drought-resistant ice plant sprigs several inches apart. Fortunately, the plants spread easily and don't require a lot of water, according to Corrie, who adds that Pat fertilizes them occasionally and they have proven to be very low maintenance. They also have taken clippings to their front yard, where they easily grew and are blooming. The hill remains green throughout the year, with the flowers bursting with color beginning in April. Corrie expects the plants to stay in bloom until June and, barring any sprinkler malfunctions, to re-bloom again in the fall. Homeowners like the Tutts are invited to enter a Western Water-wise Landscape Contest, the details of which can be found in this week's City Connection.

This Week's Official CLPOA News

POA ballots due Tuesday
Voters are reminded the POA Annual Meeting will be held Tuesday, May 12, with ballots accepted until 9 a.m. that morning. Everyone is urged to turn in his or her ballot early so that quorum can be met at the first meeting. If quorum isn’t met, the Alternate Meeting date is May 14. The Bylaws currently define “quorum” as the presence in person or by proxy of the holders of 50 percent plus one of the voting power; hence this year’s POA voting slogan: “50(%)+1=change.”

City Connection: Support mail carrier food drive tomorrow
The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), in partnership with the United States Postal Service and Campbell Soup Company, will hold its annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive tomorrow, May 9. Canyon Lake residents can participate in the 17th annual nationwide effort by placing donations of non-perishable foods, such as canned foods, rice, pasta and cereal, next to the mailbox prior to Saturday’s regular mail delivery.

City Connection: Does your home boast water-wise landscaping?
Canyon Lake residents who have water-efficient landscaping are invited to enter the Western Water-wise Landscape Contest for a chance to be recognized for their water conservation efforts. The contest is open to current customers of both the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District and Eastern Municipal Water District, but is limited to front yard landscaping only.

City Connection: Police Blotter
The Canyon Lake Police Department responded to two separate calls from homeowners last Thursday night, both reporting that their homes had been shot with BB guns. According to Lt. Danny Feltenberger, the calls came in approximately 30 minutes apart on the night of Thursday, April 30, with the first call received shortly after 11 p.m.

City Connection: News and notes
Canyon Lake Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Horton holds office hours at City Hall one day per month, with the next date scheduled for next Wednesday, May 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. “The purpose of the office hours is to give residents an opportunity to discuss issues of importance to them, ask for information or find out if the topic is a City issue or POA area of jurisdiction,” says Nancy.

Chamber Notes
The Chamber’s regular monthly meeting will be held next Wednesday, May 13, at 11:30 a.m. in the banquet room of Pepe’s Restaurant. Ben Wicke, Greg Morrison and Ron Young from EVMWD will be the featured speakers and will be discussing water conditions on the Lake and water conservation, as well as other water-related issues of interest to Canyon Lake residents and businesses.

Curtains to rise on 'Godspell' next Friday
Members of the cast for the Canyon Lake Community Theatre production of "Godspell" have donned their costumes, practiced their lines and, in every way possible, prepared themselves for what Producer Sue Collins calls a "joyous celebration of music, comedy and slapstick." The show will open next week in the Holiday Bay Room of the Lodge on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, at 7 p.m. Matinee performances will be Saturday, May 16, at 1 p.m. and Sunday, May 17, at 3 p.m.

Quaggas and zebras exert mussel power - what does it mean to Canyon Lakers?
Concern about potential quagga or zebra mussel infestation in Canyon Lake is escalating to the point that the POA Board agreed Tuesday night to join with four other agencies to fund a “Risk Assessment and Response Plan” to specifically research the risks to Canyon Lake and Lake Elsinore. The research would be carried out by Dr. Michael Anderson of the University of California Riverside.

Former mayor sentenced to house arrest
Riverside Superior Court Judge James T. Warren last Friday handed down a sentence of 90 days house arrest and three years formal probation to Frank Kessler, who pleaded guilty to embezzlement related to misuse of a City-issued credit card. The former Canyon Lake City Councilman and one-time mayor had agreed to a plea deal with the Riverside County District Attorney’s office in February that spared him from a possible maximum prison sentence of four years and eight months, but still allowed for up to 180 days in county jail.

Looking Back: What happened in May of past years?
In 1974, Canyon Lake was six years old, and plans were in the works for a ball diamond to be constructed next to the Equestrian Center, with Don Martin and Al Rogers co-chairing the project. Jim Cross was president of the Property Owners Association, and the POA Board approved a $165 assessment fee for the 1974-75 year. The Canyon Lake Home Owners Club sponsored a highly successful Las Vegas Night and filled the Lodge with members and their guests.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine''
Oooh, Shiny! The new summer blockbuster season is off and running with song and dance man Hugh Jackman reprising his role as the vicious, temperamental and heroic Wolverine/Logan. As the unofficial leader of a gang of freaks and geeks, called X-Men, “Origins” is a prequel to the Marvel comic book trilogy transformed to live action.

Announcement: Undefeated
Coach John Rojas of Canyon Lake is pictured with his winning club baseball team, the Murrieta Hurricanes, a 13-year-old travel team. The team, which includes Canyon Lakers Tanner Allen, Marino Rojas, Jacob Zinda and Chase Patton, was undefeated last weekend at a tournament in San Clemente. The players are Canyon Lake Middle School students and are former Canyon Lake Little League players.

Announcement: Clarification
Frank Opp has been helping the Canyon Lake Middle School PTSA coordinate the inaugural Fundraiser Festival Custom Car and Motorcycle Show at Storm Stadium on May 17. He and his wife, Jamie, are pictured in front of their home in Canyon Lake; however, the car on the left belongs to Anthony Ganci and the car on the right to Jerry Jaramillo.

Announcement: What a catch!
Debbie Perry she was returning to work from her lunch break when she saw Cory Taylor and his “catch” and she just had to stop and ask him about it. Cory told her he had been fishing, heard a rustle next to him and saw the snake, which they believe is a red racer. Cory was on his way to a nearby field, where he said he planned to let it go so it wouldn’t get run over by passing cars.

Announcement: Prom pictures wanted
It’s that time of year to send in favorite prom photos from the local high schools, like this shot of Kyle Cords and Bri Grossman, for The Friday Flyer's Promenade 2009 feature. Digital photos are preferred and can be sent to news@goldingpublications.com. Hard copy photos can be brought into The Friday Flyer office in the Towne Center.

In Memoriam: Steven Volkoff
Steven Edward Volkoff, 62, passed away on April 22 in Wildomar.

Letter: Fabulous Fifties!
What a wonderful step back in time! The Fabulous Fifties Fashion Show brought back many happy memories! Shirley Beuttas and her committee did such a superb job renovating the Lodge to what our ’50s proms looked like, complete with crepe paper streamers, a balloon arch and ’50s photos of movie stars and our own Canyon Lake Woman’s Club “stars.”

Letter: Officials should be vigilant
Make your vote count. Our elected officials should be vigilant about stamping out mismanagement. Lax oversight generates public skepticism about spending. That distrust can distort policy choices and undercut the credibility of legitimate spending. Past reports list cases of undeserved waste and foolishness.

Letter: Denounce boycott
I just received a letter from the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce of which I have been a member for several years. The letter addresses the boycott on Pepe’s restaurant and Marty Gibson because of his position on the Goetz Hill Project, even though Marty has withdrawn from this project. It appears the boycott is determined to punish and drive Marty out of business.

Letter: Revolving door
Don’t be caught in the revolving door. For years now Coldwell Banker Realty has promoted, quite successfully, family members to be on the POA Board. Currently Kreg McCoy is president and now his brother-in-law, Chuck Whitehead, is running for the Board (again). This family connection has been repeated over and over through the years.

Letter: Make a difference for students
I would like to thank our very generous businesses who have so far donated to our CLMS PTSA Custom Car Show, happening Sunday, May 17, in the Storm Stadium parking lot. Admission is free; only $5 to park – fun for the whole family!

Letter: No. 3 tee box
I recently was informed that No. 3 tee box changes as submitted by the TWG have been approved by the POA for the 2009-2010 TWG budget. The budgeted amount of $12,500 (approximate) appalled me. As a member of the TWG, I provided drawings for the changes based on the TWG Committee’s recommendations.

Letter: Candidates not 'joined at the hip'
This is in response to Cliff Miller’s May 1 letter to the editor. It puzzles me as to why anyone should be threatened by the community recognizing a slate of viable candidates for the open POA Board positions. These three candidates – Michelle Gordon, David Johnston and Steve Salazar – are not joined at the hip nor do they share one brain.

Letter: Experience is important
Be sure to vote by May 12 for our next POA Board of Directors. This is an opportunity to help the community adjust and work through the present economic downturn. Some have said don’t vote for those candidates that have experience and have served in the past. We believe experience and lessons learned are extremely important.

Annual Meeting agenda

May's Board meeting recapped
Director Bonner presented a resolution on behalf of the Board (printed in full in the Treasurer’s Report on Page A-9) to deny all requests for fee waivers or deductions for charitable events at POA amenities. The resolution resulted in a lengthy discussion among the Board members. Director Johnston felt it was premature to vote on the resolution without knowing all the figures.

Exercise ambassadors
On April 30, the “Canyon Lakers” chair volleyball team and its sponsor, HRBC Insurance, took an ambassador team to Murrieta Senior Center’s Wellness Fair and demonstrated the sport of chair volleyball. The center’s coordinator was so impressed with the sport she is adding it to the activity schedule.

ACCording to the ACC: Signs
This is a good time to remind the community of acceptable practices for signs. While the Association can direct a sign to be placed outside the Community Setback (POA property) we do allow signs to be a minimum of 6 ft. back from the curb. Signs of a reasonable and customary dimension, but not to exceed 5 sq. ft., are appropriate for “For Sale/Real Estate” signs.
