Stars and stripes

For all the red, white and blue that was displayed at Holiday Harbor last weekend, the Fine Arts Guild's picnic dinner-dance could have been called "Summer Fun Under the Stars and Stripes!" More pictures of this popular event, taken by Bert Barbay, can be found in this issue.

Learn to recognize the dreaded quagga/zebra mussels tomorrow
What if, after spending a week on the Colorado River, something unusual had attached itself to your boat, floats, anchor and buoys? Something slimy . . . or something gritty, like sandpaper? Those who are well read, like the Harper family of Canyon Lake, would immediately suspect the dreaded quagga mussels – and well they should.

City Connection: Citation issued over 'Seduction' show dismissed
In a hearing held Tuesday in the City Multi-purpose Room, a hearing officer found that the show, "Seduction: Exotic Men of Magic," staged at Pepe's Mexican Restaurant earlier this year, did not violate City municipal code and dismissed the administrative citation issued against owner Marty Gibson, ordering the City to refund $300 in fines paid by him to the City.

City Connection: Council to vote on redevelopment plan Wednesday
Residents and Towne Center business owners are encouraged to attend next Wednesday’s Canyon Lake City Council meeting at which a joint public hearing of the Council and the Canyon Lake Redevelopment Agency will be held. The hearing will center around adoption of the proposed redevelopment plan and final Environmental Impact Report for the project area, which consists of a total of 86 acres in three separate commercial areas along Railroad Canyon Rd.

City Connection: CLPD focuses on public safety behind the gates
With summer upon us and the 4th of July holiday approaching, it might be a good time to review traffic laws inside and outside the gates of Canyon Lake. Many of the same laws apply on both sides of the fence. From time to time, Canyon Lake residents ask questions about what the CLPD can do in regard to traffic enforcement within the gates of Canyon Lake. As most of you know, the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association contracts with Allied Barton Security to enforce POA rules.

City Connection: Library traffic up around County
According to administrators with the Riverside County Library System, traffic at libraries in the county is up 25 percent from a year ago and the same is true at the newly expanded Canyon Lake Library. Currently, the Library is visited by over 850 patrons each week and serves not only Canyon Lake, but also those from Canyon Hills, Quail Valley and surrounding areas.

City Connection: News and notes
Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Horton and Councilmember Marty Gibson are now holding regular office hours at City Hall and residents are invited to stop in to discuss topics of importance to them, ask questions or request information. Marty is available every other Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m., with the next time scheduled for Tuesday, June 30. Nancy holds office hours on the second Thursday of each month from 4 to 6 p.m., with the next time set for Thursday, July 9.

Chamber Notes
The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce regular monthly luncheon will be held on Wednesday, July 8, at 11:30 a.m. in the banquet room of Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant. The guest speaker will be Riverside County Fire Chief John Hawkins. The cost of the luncheon is $13 and is open to everyone; however, reservations are required and must be made no later than Monday, July 6.

First of three 'Learn to Ski Days' is today
The Canyon Lake Ski Club will host three Learn To Ski days this summer in the North Ski Area and the first one is today, June 26, from noon to 3 p.m. The next Learn to Ski Days are Thursday, July 16 and Wednesday, August 5, also from noon to 3 p.m. in the North Ski Area. Three boats will run with three skiers per boat per hour. “We cater to all learning levels and ages,” says Ski Club instructor and boat driver Al Van Beenen.

Indian Beach is the site of Sunday's Poker Run
In addition to being a preferred mode of transportation in Canyon Lake, what do street carts, golf carts and boats have in common? This weekend it’s an event designed to welcome them all! Street Carts of Canyon Lake is hosting its annual Poker Run this Sunday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Indian Beach. The family event will feature picnic-style games and music, drawings and the sale of hot dogs and hamburgers.

Free fishing days
The Department of Fish and Game has an offer that will suit the once-in-a-summer fisherman who wants to fish with his or her kids without having to buy an adult fishing license. Each year, the Department of Fish and Game offers two “Free Fishing Days” when adults 16 years and older can fish in inland or ocean waters without having to buy a sport-fishing license. A one-day sport-fishing license normally costs $13.40. Free Fishing Days for 2009 are July 4 and September 7.

Children's 'surf musical' to wash ashore in July
It’s a month away, but Canyon Lakers will want to mark their calendars for the Canyon Lake Community Theatre children’s production, “Wipeout,” to be performed on the Lodge stage Thursday, July 23, through Sunday, July 26. Directed by Ilene Moore, the cast is made up of about 75 local children ages 4 to 14; some have been acting for years and others are experiencing their first show.

'Twas a night for 'Summer Fun Under the Stars'
Attendees at last weekend’s “Summer Fun Under the Stars” picnic dinner-dance, featuring the group, “Kulayd,” experienced near-perfect weather, good friends, food of their choosing and music to set their toes tapping and their feet dancing. Some groups of friends went all out with their table décor, with five tables winning prizes for "Most Original," "Most Patriotic" (two tables that were together), "Most Glamorous" and "Event Theme."

Woman's Club honors its own and others
The final meeting of the Woman’s Club’s calendar year on June 17 was a day for sharing the bounty of the club’s fundraising efforts for its many philanthropic causes. Among other presentations, the club gave scholarships to 12 deserving young women in Canyon Lake, according to spokesperson Bonnie Carnagey. The scholarship recipients were Julie Willis, Alexandra Cohen, Kimberly Collins, Leah Janke, Ava Shih, Holly Wallace, Audrey Zenteno, Brooke Hansen, Kelli Lynn Keigwin, Pamela Kelly, Christine O’Malley and Althea Wagoner.

Charity boxing event benefits Heart to Heart
The 600-plus spectators who attended the “Fight for Life” Riverside County Youth Amateur Boxing Championship, held June 7 in Menifee, were impressed not only with the 52 fighters who participated in the 26 bouts fought that day, but also with the facility, according to event organizer Steve Harriman of Canyon Martial Arts. The event was a fundraising event held at the Valley Wide Recreation and Park District Gym.

Couple reflects on 60 years, 30 homes together
Sixty years is a long time to live with the same person and definitely calls for a celebration; which is exactly what Joe and Vi Henderson will be doing with their family this Sunday, June 28. They were married June 24, 1949, in Reno, Nevada. Asked how they have managed to survive the ups and downs of life together, they mention honesty, patience, good genes and staying active. Perhaps they could add “a change of scenery” to that list.

Education Foundation presents scholarships
The Lake Elsinore Valley Education Foundation (LEVEF) has awarded five $1,000 scholarships to students at Elsinore, Lakeside, Ortega and Temescal Canyon High Schools. Canyon Lake resident Ava Shih, a 2009 graduate of TCHS, was one of the recipients. She will attend UC Berkeley and is planning to pursue a career in business.

Elsinore High recognizes Top 100 in academics
The following students, several from Canyon Lake, were named in the Top 100 at Elsinore High School for 2008-09:

Have an international summer - host a student
The last few years, as the economy worsened and families were displaced from their homes, organizations like EF Educational Homestay Programs (EFEHP), a non-profit organization that arranges international student homestays, have found it more and more difficult to find families to host students. Two years ago Josie Rigden, a coordinator for EF who arranges homestays with local families, found her own small home full of international students who had not been placed by the time they arrived in Southern California.

Spotlight on Seniors
The Friday Flyer is celebrating the accomplishments of outstanding Canyon Lake seniors who have graduated from local schools this month. The Friday Flyer does not automatically receive notices of Canyon Lake students’ accomplishments in local schools. Parents are invited to contact The Friday Flyer regarding the academic, athletic and/or artistic accomplishments of their children, especially of high school and college seniors just graduating.

Spotlight on Seniors: Don Dennert II
Temescal Canyon High School senior Don W. Dennert II has a voluminous list of achievements. A resident of Canyon Lake since he was in the 6th grade, Don is the son of Drake and Charlotte Dennert. He was selected Student of the Month in December 2008 and recently presented with a $2,500 scholarship as one of only eight Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce Students of the Year.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Proposal'
Move over Matthew McConaughey, the “romcom” (romantic comedy) has a new leading man. Picture a better looking and less creepy Ben Affleck as stud puppet Ryan Reynolds joins America’s sweetheart Sandra Bullock and a remarkable ensemble cast. This is a laugh out loud, but charming chick flick that even guys might not mind on date night. Serious movie buffs should stay away, as the story is predictable and formulaic. But that’s how these films are supposed to be; hello!

Announcement: Oh, the serendipity of winning a special quilt!
Every now and then there are special coincidences that occur that stand out and are interesting, as was the case last month on May 23 at Fiesta Day. A lot of celebrations were going on that day, but few could match the personal celebration experienced by Elsie Ronkainen and her daughter, Nancy Crotty, who attended the parade and festivities that followed. The Bosom Buddies were selling opportunity tickets for a quilt and Nancy, who says she isn't normally lucky, bought two tickets and lovingly slipped them into her mother’s pocket.

Announcement: Car of the Month
The Canyon Lake Car Club has bestowed Dave and Judy Deboe with car of the month honors for their 1955 Chevy Bel Air convertible, which they have owned since December 2007. The car had been fully restored by the previous owners in a two-and-a-half-year frame-off project and had only 703 miles on it since completion. Dave says the car was painstakingly restored to original condition and features a 265 cubic inch 180 horsepower V8 and a manual transmission with three on the column.

Announcement: June fishing at June Lake
Jack Wamsley, John Sullivan, Howard Berkowitz, Rob Smith, Leroy Madera, Neil Wagerley and Gene Jones (taking the picture above and feeding the raccoon in the photo at right) show off a few of the 60 trout they caught during their 11th annual trip to the Fern Creek Lodge over the week of June 7 to 12 in June Lake, located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada.

Announcement: Jr. Waterskier to represent U.S.
Steven Brooks of Canyon Lake traveled to Florida to compete at the U.S. Waterski Team Trials this past weekend.  Junior skiers from all over the country vied for one of four spots on the Jr. U.S. Waterski Team.  Steven’s scores of 152 ft. and 151 ft. in Jump, 6290 and 6190 points in Tricks and two rounds of 1 at -35 off in Slalom earned him a spot on the U.S. team.

Announcement: Hole-in-one times two!
It was a busy week for the Women’s Golf Club, according to Handicap Chairperson Cheryl Ritsema. On Tuesday, June 9, while playing in the Senior Tournament, Mary Leathley had a hole-in-one on Hole 15 using her 7-iron. In her group to witness this accomplishment were Ann Franks, Jody McConville and Diane Schneider.

Letter: Students need a home
EF Educational Homestay Programs has worked with the families of Canyon Lake and wants to thank all the families that have hosted in the previous years. Over the past six years, EF has placed about 200 students in Canyon Lake. Unfortunately, this year, we have only placed 10 students and still need homes for 20 more students. Are there any families that can host a student for just 27 days?

Letter: Saying good-bye
To all Canyon Lake residents and friends, I just wanted to say it was an honor and a privilege to work for you in Canyon Lake. It saddens me to tell you I no longer work for Allied Barton Security Services – not by choice. The last 10 years have been wonderful and I have enjoyed serving the community. Canyon Lake has become a part of me and will be greatly missed. Please take care of Canyon Lake for me; I will miss you all – you truly have a bit of paradise.

Letter: Campground reservations
My adventure on making reservations at Happy Camp began with giddiness and excitement and, sad to say, ended with defeat. I guess some residents of Canyon Lake would say, “Stop whining! You didn’t get a spot! Neither did I!” Well, my complaint is not that I did not get a spot; it is to give suggestions, inform and, hopefully, improve reservations at Happy Camp.

Letter: Holiday Harbor parking
During the sanctioned CLAMS picnic on June 17, a number of cars were given tickets by the Community Patrol for parking in Holiday Harbor’s boat trailer slots. The CLAMS have been assured those tickets will be voided. I counted only three units with trailers in the lot at the time and 20 slots were available. In the club’s history of scheduling events at that park, we have never been advised by the POA that we must also reserve the parking lot for attendees.

Letter: Tea Party
On June 16, I submitted a request for permission to host a two-and-a-half-hour Tea Party to be held on POA-owned lawns. Next day, I received a letter stating that the Association could not give its permission “to conduct this demonstration at its Main Gate.” Thus, we were prevented from conveying a patriotic message to Canyon Lake residents and visitors.

East Gate to open tomorrow
As part of Phase 2 of the POA’s Road Project, International Pavement Solutions has been removing the old asphalt and rebuilding the roadway from curb to curb on Canyon Lake Dr. North between White Wake Dr. and Goetz Rd., necessitating the closure of the East Gate for the past two weeks. The work included rebuilding and lengthening the concrete island at the gate. The East Gate is scheduled to reopen tomorrow and striping will commence Monday, June 29.

Lottery for Holiday Harbor is tomorrow morning
For those wanting to enjoy 4th of July at Holiday Harbor – one of the best parks for viewing the fireworks – residents are reminded the Activities Department will hold a lottery to assign the tables tomorrow morning, June 27, in the POA Board Room. The POA will start accepting forms at 9 a.m., at which time members will be given a lottery number drawn from a pool of random numbers. One number will be allowed per tract and lot.

Having friends for the 4th? Plan ahead!
In anticipation of a busy 4th of July weekend, Member Services Manager Lynn Jenson urges members who are planning to have parties that weekend to turn in their guest lists early. “We are allowing lists to be turned in earlier than the usual 48 hours as set in the Rules and Regulations in order to process all the requests in time for the holiday,” says Lynn. With long lines expected at the gates, Community Patrol Manager Vince Schiavi urges residents to obtain pre-printed passes they can mail to their guests so they can enter via the decal lane rather than wait in the visitor lane.

Website provides holiday information
At www.canyonlakepoa.com, a click on the icon at right will take visitors to links for the Online Guest Call-in Form, Online Party List Form, Canyon Lake Map and Stop the Quagga, the latter being a link that provides information about boat registration. Quick facts for the 4th of July regarding Member Services hours, tee times on the Golf Course, Pool Hours and more also can be found at this site.

Notice re: 4th of July Tea Party
Members may have seen advertisements in the non-POA pages of The Friday Flyer advertising a Tea Party demonstration to be held at the POA’s Main Gate on July 4, 2009. This event has not been scheduled with or approved by the POA. The 4th of July is the busiest guest traffic day of the year and the POA cannot permit this event to take place given the increased risk it creates for accidents, injuries and interference with ingress and egress of vehicles on that date. Please do not show up for this unauthorized event.

The Equestrian Center loses an old friend
The Equestrian Center and the community of people who use it regularly, including those who board horses and those who attend Horse Camps and Play Days, lost a friend June 16 with the passing of the little Welsh lesson pony, Charlie, according to Equestrian Club member Kerri Sunbeck, who says Charlie served the Equestrian Center and Trainer Alex Radomirovich more than 10 years, teaching children how to ride.

Here's a refresher course on ski rules
With a busy summer ahead, it makes sense for Canyon Lakers and their guests to refresh their memories regarding the “rules of the road” for skiers.

Taco Tuesday is a tradition for all ages
Canyon Lakers are invited to enjoy Taco Tuesday each week from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on the Lodge patio. Taco Del Mar, the official caterer, is offering taco salads, burritos, Baja Bowls, tacos, rice, beans and chips and salsa/queso. ABC Bounce provides a play area for the kids, as well as sno-cones and cotton candy. Coldstone’s sells smoothies and coffee drinks; the Canyon Lake Explorers, sell sodas, water, Monster drinks and candy and the Lodge Bar sells beer and margaritas.

POA website helps members stay 'in the know'
A new feature has been added to the Property Owners Association website, www.canyonlakepoa.com, that allows members to keep track of proposed rule changes that are in a 30-day reading status. Members can get background information on the proposed change and see exactly what the new rule would look like. They also can send POA staff members their comments on those changes.

Rule of the Week
Marine Patrol receives many inquiries regarding rules pertaining to the Lake. In the coming months we will try to highlight some of the most important ones. This week’s rule deals with flotation devices. MP7C.13 states that persons may be towed on a flotation device at the 5 mph areas not designated for water skiing. It’s important to remember that a life jacket must be worn by everyone, regardless of age. No standing up on the flotation device.

ACCording to the ACC: Changes or improvements
Any time you change the exterior of your home in any way, shape or form, a permit is required by the Architectural Control Department. Requirements for the City of Canyon Lake (Building Department) and the Property Owners Association are not usually the same. While the City handles structural matters, the POA deals with the aesthetics of the community. Each property owner is required to notify the Association of any exterior changes to their properties.
