Flying the red, white and blue

Patriotism and pride in country aren't just for national holidays. Take a drive around the community and one is apt to see flags of every shape and size flying proudly, mounted to porches and poles or displayed in windows. Living on the Lake, though, affords some Canyon Lakers a unique way to display the red, white and blue to passing boaters, as seen in this photo by Richard Bannock.

Residents invited to public hearing on proposal to raise water rates
The price of water is going up and the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District doesn’t like it any more than its customers do, according to Ben Wicke, who spoke at Tuesday night’s POA Board meeting and Wednesday night’s City Council meeting. He is the Canyon Lake representative to the EVMWD board.

City Connection: Hundreds attend City's inaugural Water Summit
Mayor Pro-Tem Nancy Horton says she was thrilled with Saturday’s turnout of several hundred Canyon Lakers for the City’s inaugural Water Summit. A member of the City Water Committee, Nancy was integral in bringing the event to the City, saying that she believes community education is critical in cutting back on water use as the state suffers through a third year of drought, edging ever closer to mandatory water rationing.

The winners were Katie and Ryan Ammenheuser, Joshua and Robert Bayless, Allison Lee, Michael and Niki Loo and Katelynn and Sierra Macias.

Canyon Lake Little League 'hits it out of the park'
Gault Field was awash in colorful booths and inflatable jumpers last Saturday as Canyon Lake Little League hosted its annual closing day ceremonies and carnival. Ticket sales will benefit Heart to Heart, Donate Life Organ and Tissue Transplant and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Cyber sleuths uncover false claims in article
The Friday Flyer has been informed that an article appearing in the May 22 issue was based on false information. The story, “Wartime heroics are recounted by Navy SEAL,” garnered immediate response from two former Navy SEALs and the office of the Naval Special Warfare Command after it was posted at www.thefridayflyer.com. Under question was Mike Meeks’ claim of being a Navy SEAL.

Looking Back: What happened in June of past years?
In 1974, Canyon Lake was six years young, and still growing. Richard Nixon resigned as president, Mao launched his Cultural Revolution, heiress Patty Hearst was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army and inflation was determined to be 13.9 percent. “Jaws” by Peter Benchley topped the bestseller list, but no sharks were observed off Indian Beach.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Up'
Inside every old person is a younger person wondering what happened? So, Disney-Pixar created a 3-D animated feature seemingly directed to senior citizens. Oh sure, kids will enjoy “Up,” it’s a cartoon! But, 79-year-old Ed Asner voices the part of a retired balloon salesman who literally takes his house on the high flying adventure of a lifetime. The stage is set beautifully and succinctly for this seriously uplifting story by writer Bob Peterson (“Finding Nemo”) in the first 10 minutes.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Barbados a favorite of the Barbays
Bert Barbay, who has taken countless photographs for The Friday Flyer, recently returned from a two week Caribbean cruise with his wife, Kathy, aboard the Caribbean Princess. Bert says he has gotten to relive each day of the trip while sorting through the 1,500 digital photos he took along the way.

Royal enjoyment for traveling friends
Traveling is a favorite pastime of the Canyon Lake Travel Club members, many of whom have formed friendships and travel together for non-club events. Such was the case for this group of Canyon Lakers who spent several weeks in May at the Cancun Palace.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: A bit of surfer's paradise
When some residents go on vacation, they escape Canyon Lake’s “little bit of paradise” for a different bit of paradise. Relaxing at a beach house with a pool, a maid, a cook and great waves was a “little bit of surfer’s paradise” resident Scott Enochs and a friend experienced during a recent surfing trip to Guatemala.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Roadrunners 'road-eo'
Thirty-two members of the Canyon Lake Roadrunners attended an outing at Tombstone Territories RV Park in southeastern Arizona in May. According to Chuck and Joy Call, highlights of the trip were tours of the Kartchner Caverns and Fort Huachuca, as well as the cities of Tombstone and Bisbee. Phyllis and Jim Lippen hold a copy of The Friday Flyer.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: In the footsteps of Jesus
Walking in the footsteps of Jesus – that is what Canyon Lakers Mike and Aubrey Zingale, Jerry and Janelle Liem and Dave and Rita Griggs experienced on a recent trip to Israel. Pictured with them are Pastor Josh Black, holding The Friday Flyer, and his wife, McKensie, along with Paul and Laura Novotny, all members of Calvary Chapel Canyon Hills.

In Memoriam: Adele Keefer
Longtime resident Adele Marie Keefer, 82, passed away on Wednesday, May 27.

In Memoriam: Robert Anthony
Robert “Bobby” E. Anthony, 87, transitioned into his spiritual life on May 27.

Letter: Fiesta Day thanks
We had a wonderful Fiesta Day thanks to the following: Vonnie Kent organized an outstanding parade; LaRue McNamara put together the dignitaries breakfast donated by Karen McSpadden and Susanne Mardirosian; Mike Shroyer organized the entertainment and emceed events on the inside and outside stages.

Letter: Man of his word
Kudos to Jordan Ehrenkranz. As I watched the City Council budget meeting on May 26, it reinforced my thoughts as to why this fine man was elected to our Council, despite the obstacles of other people running for office. When elected, he promised he would bring peace and harmony back to the Council.

Letter: Urban legend
The Pepe’s “boycott” issue is becoming an urban legend. I note Tim Brown’s letter of May 29 and agree. Like Tim I am a member of “Concerned Citizens” and would also have expected to be involved in any such alleged boycott. I know of no such action and would condemn it if I had. Two correspondents have now made concrete accusations.

Letter: Water Summit a success
I wanted to write and thank everyone who attended our first City of Canyon Lake Water Summit. It was a great success and we are hopeful this is something we can make an annual event. I would also like to thank our generous sponsors who made the event possible; our primary sponsor was the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association.

Letter: Who is concerned?
Who are the real Concerned Citizens? It was interesting to watch the City Council budget meeting on May 26. It appears that the two new Council members who have a way of belittling Marty Gibson perhaps have a different reason for serving than being concerned citizens.

Letter: Too much control
While I was sitting in Pepe’s having dinner this last Friday night with my family, I was shocked to see, in about one hour’s time, three cars of Canyon Lake people pulled over by the police the minute they entered the Main Gate. Flashing lights and police officers were everywhere, pulling people out in the middle of the street and performing tests on them.

Corporate Counsel provides report
This report will focus on what is likely the most significant legal ruling affecting the Association made during the years I have had the honor to be your Corporate Counsel. In December 2008, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Mac Fisher granted a motion for summary adjudication in the case of ìBolanos vs. Canyon Lake Property Owners Associationî and others.

ACCording to the ACC: Dumpsters, PODs and roll-offs
Are you or someone you know moving? Arguably the hardest part of moving is tackling the garage and some of the interior, underused closets. That’s the time many folks start thinking it’s time to order a dumpster or a POD to get oneself cleaned up and organized. Most of these containers are easily stored on the driveway or member’s property.
