The City of Canyon Lake, CR&R Waste and Recycling Services and Western Riverside Council of Governments have made it even easier to recycle and protect the environment, with the delivery of nearly 4,000 City of Canyon Lake Recycling Guides in the July 17 edition of The Friday Flyer. The guide, a two-sided wheel created by CR&R, reminds residents what color trash bins to use for household waste.
City Connection: Library to provide entertaining programs in August
The Canyon Lake Library is offering several entertaining programs for various age groups during August.
City Connection: Unsupervised youth
I hope everyone in Canyon Lake is having a great summer. I’d like to take a moment to address a couple of concerns that have been observed by the Canyon Lake Police Department. As always, summer in Canyon Lake would not be complete without Taco Tuesday and the fun everyone has with their friends and family. Recently though, some problems have arisen regarding unsupervised juveniles.

Kids Fishing Derby is only two weeks away
The Canyon Lake Bassmasters will host the 23nd annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, August 15, at Holiday Harbor, for Canyon Lake residents and their guests ages 5 to 15. From noon to 1 p.m., hot dogs, chips and water will be provided to registered participants.
Salvage and cleanup begin for law firm after fire
With the cause of the July 17 Towne Center Fire still under investigation, salvage work was underway Wednesday morning on the lawn next to the Law Offices of Giardinelli and Duke, with filing cabinets and piles of scorched and water-damaged paperwork laid out on tables and grass. The Giardinelli staff, accompanied by Kristy Giardinelli, worked in rubber gloves and masks to either sort papers into neat piles or throw them into the trash.

Lioness welcome former 1986 exchange student
When exchange students travel to another country and live with a family, it gives them the opportunity to experience another culture, something Eva Marie (Pree) Kircher feels may be the key to peace on earth. Eva was an Austrian exchange student 22 years ago and lived in Canyon Lake with the Van Rooy family.
Schnauzer hangs 10 in Huntington Beach contest
Nash Adams is one cool surfer dude dog. Even his real name is cool – “Moment of Glory.” Of course, if his mom, Kristyl Adams, wanted to call him by his real name and abbreviated it, she might call him Mommy and that probably wouldn’t be cool, so she calls him Nash. The name “Nash” has dash. And that’s what the 3 1/2-year-old black and silver miniature schnauzer had when he competed in a surf contest in Huntington Beach on July 11.
Families enjoy reenacting old photos
Two Canyon Lake families have found it entertaining recently to reenact old family photographs, capturing changes and fun family traditions.
'Caring Bridge' for Bill Faulds
Friends of Bill Faulds will be saddened to learn that their former neighbor was diagnosed earlier this month with Stage 4 adenocarcinoma stemming from the lung to the brain, spinal and pelvic areas. Nonetheless, “Bill still has a lot of fight in him and we believe in miracles,” says Ethel, his wife of 61 years.
Hawaiian Mars in Lake Elsinore
Many Canyon Lakers were interested to see the Hawaii Mars firefighting aircraft flying over Canyon Lake last week while conducting its test flights from Lake Elsinore. The huge aircraft, which lands on water, completed a rigorous series of tests to be certified for use with the U.S. Forest Service. Before being converted, it was originally used as a transport plane during World War II.
Due diligence can help residents avoid scams
Scam artists have been around for centuries so it has always been a good idea to apply due diligence to avoid being scammed. Just like cockroaches in the night, scammers seem to come out of the woodwork in challenging economic times. They feed on the innocence of even the savviest victims, often pretending to be providing a helpful service or acting as an official trying to help protect the victim.
Notes From a Road Once Taken: Encounter at Hawaiian cemetery is memorable
“If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea . . .” This inscription, taken from Psalm 139, graces the grave marker of American aviator and hero, Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic from New York to Paris in May 1927. Lindbergh is buried in the Palapalo Hoíomau Church Cemetery in Kipahulu, Maui.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'G-Force'
Years ago, high quality animation was created by Warner Brothers, Hanna-Barbera and, of course, Walt Disney. What a sight it was to see animated characters (cartoons) dancing with live action actors in ìMary Poppinsî (1964). In ìMilo and Otisî (1986), actors provided the dialog for live animals. And, in "The Animal" (2001), weíre still not really sure what Rob Schnieder was trying to accomplish.
Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Former Canyon Lakers heed the call to McCall
Four couples with Canyon Lake connections discovered McCall, Idaho is not only a wonderful place to vacation – but, for some, it’s also a nice place to live. Enjoying the Idaho mountains recently were Ken and Colleen Andersen, Dave and Diane Darden, Sue and Tom Wetzel and Chuck and Karen DeSalvo.

Announcement: Stater Bros. opens in Canyon Hills
A group of Canyon Lakers that included Mayor Mary Craton is pictured at the grand opening celebration of the new Stater Bros. along with Jack Brown, chairman and chief operating officer of the supermarket chain on Wednesday, July 22. The environmentally friendly store is located at the Canyon Hills Shopping Center and opened its doors for business the same day.
Letter: Stop mudslinging
Let’s discuss John Rosenbaum’s letter dated July 24. Like most Fridays, when I get home I enjoy reading The Friday Flyer. I was especially looking forward to reading about the fire we had the week before in the Towne Center. After reading the articles about the fires and feeling for the business owners who lost so much, I came across Letters to the Editor.
Letter: Cheers for Cris
Three cheers for Cris Gibson. I’ve known Cris since he was about 7 years old and have seen the pride and affection between him and his dad, Marty Gibson. Every parent knows how important their involvement in their activities is to their children, and playoff games are no exception.
Letter: Parade of Lights
Yes, I know it is the middle of summer, but now is a good time to start planning for the annual Parade of Lights (sometimes known as the Christmas Boat Parade). Now is a good time to start planning on how you are going to decorate your boat. It is probably in the water or at least uncovered, so that you can gather all of those important measurements to incorporate into your plan for a great entry in the annual parade!
Letter: Raccoon attack
This animal is not your friend! On the evening of July 21, a raccoon attacked my neighbor’s dog. The neighbor grabbed the raccoon off the dog and threw it off her deck, but not before the raccoon turned and bit her hand. That evening my neighbor had seven shots in the emergency room, with many more to come.

Standing Committee Schedule
Jr. Golf Clinic to be held next week
The annual Canyon Lake Jr. Golf Clinic is scheduled for the week of August 3 through 7. Although the registration deadline has passed, children will be accepted on a space available basis for a cost of $45 per child. “We are also in need of volunteers to help with the clinic and tournament,” says Golf Pro Dave Lindeman.
Important notices
The POA website, www.canyonlakepoa.com, has a new feature residents will find especially helpful for discovering up-to-date information. It is called “Important Notices” and can be found on the website’s home page. Unlike the static information found on many of the pages, this page is updated as needed with new information. For example, last Friday, July 24, there was a “Notice of Power Loss” that occurred in some areas of the Towne Center and Main Gate.
Check out 'Beach Treats at Sunset Beach'
Price and convenience are keys to the new food service the POA is providing at Sunset Beach – a food service now being advertised on signs and flyers throughout the community as “Beach Treats at Sunset Beach,” according to POA Vice-President Michelle Gordon, whose committee has been working on dining options in the Lodge area.
Don't park on streets during street sweeping
Members and their guests play a part in ensuring streets are clean by not parking on the street for sweep day between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Moving vehicles off a street scheduled for sweeping allows the sweeper to thoroughly clean the street from curb-to-curb. One parked car equals nearly three car-lengths of space that can’t be swept because the street sweeping equipment must leave room to avoid it.
Rule of the Week
Marine Patrol receives many inquiries regarding rules pertaining to the Lake. This summer we want to highlight some of the important ones.
ACCording to the ACC: Disabled vehicles
Section VI- C.3 of the Rules and Regulations states that no stripped-down, partially wrecked or junk vehicle, or any part thereof, shall be parked on any Canyon Lake street or any lot in such a manner as to be visible from any other lot, street, lake or golf course within Canyon Lake. No inoperable vehicle, or vehicle that is used regularly, i.e. at least once a week, shall be parked or stored on any lot in such a manner as to be visible from any other lot, street, lake of golf course within Canyon Lake.
