This Week's Official CLPOA News
Marine Band to return to Indian Beach
The Stars and Stripes will wave larger than life at tomorrow’s August 22 Concert Under the Stars at Indian Beach as the Twentynine Palms Marine Band serenades Canyon Lakers, beginning at 6 p.m. Sponsored by the Fine Arts Guild and the Home Owners Club, the concert is free of charge and open to all ages. Seating will be provided; however, attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets, as well as their own picnic supper.
City Connection: Local business owners warned of new scam
Local business owners who operate as a corporation or limited liability company (LLC) are being warned of a new scam directed at such entities. According to the press release issued by Senator John Benoit’s office, businesses have reported receiving letters from third parties indicating that certain documents, specifically the state’s Annual Statement of Information, must be filed with the Secretary of State’s office to comply with their California Corporations Code filing obligations, but can only be done so through the third party and for a substantial fee.
City Connection: Free recycle craft center for kids at Farmers' Market
The event held on Sunday, August 9, to celebrate the first full year of the Canyon Lake Farmers’ Market was well attended, with everyone having a lot of fun, according to Robin Ramirez of Second Chance Textiles, who helped to put on the party. In addition to the regular farmers, growers, fresh food and other vendors, the Farmers’ Market is also now the place for local kids to have fun while learning about recycling.
City Connection: Bus stop upgrades
Four new bus benches and matching trash cans were installed at Canyon Lake’s bus stops along Railroad Canyon Rd. last week, thanks to the Riverside Transit Authority (RTA) and Councilmember Barry Talbot, who serves as the Canyon Lake representative to the RTA committee. The bus stops, one of which is pictured above, are located on the north and south sides of Railroad Canyon Rd. at the intersection of Canyon Lake Dr. South and Skylink Dr.
County on the lookout for Master Composters
The Riverside County Waste Management Department is looking for people who are interested in becoming volunteer Master Composters with the Riverside County Backyard Composting Program. The annual six-week class will be offered this year on consecutive Saturdays beginning tomorrow, August 22, through October 3.
City Connection: News and notes
Canyon Lake residents are invited to attend a meeting of the City of Canyon Lake Planning Committee, which will be held Tuesday, August 25, at 6 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. At the meeting, planning staff will present proposed changes to the City’s General Plan and Zoning Map; those residents and businesses who may have received a notice in the mail are especially encouraged to attend, as their property may be included in the proposed changes.
Giant letters in waterfront parks are for emergencies
Emergencies can occur anywhere at anytime and often, the quality of information and the speed at which it is relayed to the 911 dispatcher can make the difference between the incident merely becoming an uncomfortable memory or, at worst, turning tragic. Residents may recall the untimely death of Bill von Zabern that cast a pall over this year’s Polar Bear Day, when he collapsed from heart failure while hydrofoiling.
Waterline under Longhorn Dr. to be replaced
The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District Board of Directors approved the Longhorn Dr. Waterline Replacement Project at the August 13 Board meeting. The project is designed to replace existing waterlines under Longhorn Dr. from Vacation Dr. to just south of Appaloosa Ct. The contract to construct 7,200 ft. of water pipeline was awarded to TBU, Inc. of Beaumont for $884,198.
Tickets now on sale for CLCT's 'My Fair Lady'
With the long-awaited reopening of Indian Beach, the magic returns to the Moonlight Theater on September 25 and 26 and October 2 and 3 as Canyon Lake Community Theatre presents the “loverly” musical, “My Fair Lady.” “We‘ve been waiting more than five long years to return to our little stage at Indian Beach,” says award-winning Director Lisa Tousseau.
Time to update Directory listings
The Golding Publications staff is preparing for the 2010 edition of Canyon Lake’s Residential Directory. With new escrows closed every month and, lately, foreclosures, it is a challenging task to keep the phone book current each year. Residents are reminded that being listed is not mandatory nor automatic.
Kids Fishing Derby a fitting (almost) end to summer
The annual Kids Fishing Derby, hosted by the Bassmasters last Saturday at Holiday Harbor, was a tremendous success with just under 200 youngsters participating, according to Bassmasters spokesperson Gary Bradford.
Kids Fishing Derby 2009: Photos
Meeks wasn't a SEAL - but still a hero
Readers may recall a somewhat dramatic twist that took place in the pages of The Friday Flyer after a story about Vietnam veteran Mike Meeks appeared in the May 22, 2009 issue, just before Fiesta Day. The story recollected Mike’s work with the Navy SEALs and an occasion when he and his unit were rescued from enemy entrapment with the help of Air Force pilots who were diverted from their original mission to come to the units’ aid.
Trio of friends travel to Europe on trip of a lifetime
For Michael Lee and his friends who traveled to Europe recently, it was a trip of a lifetime. “It was the first time I had been out of the country without my parents and I got to go with two of my good buddies, Trenton Paddock and Sean Iannarelli McDonald,” says Michael. The three Canyon Lake friends are all college students. Michael is a student at Cal State Monterey Bay; Trenton attends Kettering University in Michigan and Sean is a student locally at Mt. San Jacinto College.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'District 9'
What if aliens finally come to earth and bypass NY, DC and LA? In “District 9,” ET parks his saucer in the airspace above Johannesburg, South Africa and does nothing whatsoever. Sure, this is a low budget sci-fi thriller, but come on; you gotta follow some of the rules. Obviously, this film is flawed, but finds a way to become important, anyway.
Announcement: Wedding bells
Randy and Mavis Schutz are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter, Jessica Janelle, to Joseph Dean Jacques. The wedding took place on May 30 at The Orchard in Menifee. Attending the wedding were 170 people who came to wish the bride and groom a happy life together.
Announcement: Gymnast takes the gold
For the second year in a row, 10-year-old resident Lily Turner won the gold medal at the Junior Olympics National Championship, held earlier this summer in San Jose, California. Lily’s gold came in the double mini trampoline competition in the 11- to 12-year-old Level 6.
Announcement: Scholar heads to Chapman
Tara Reynen, a 2007 graduate of Temescal Canyon High School and a 2009 graduate of Mt. San Jacinto College, will be leaving her home community of Canyon Lake to enter her junior year of college at Chapman University in Orange, California.
Announcement: Coed softball a success
Sunday, August 16, marked the end of the Canyon Lake Summer Adult Coed Softball League. For the past two months, the teams got together on Sunday mornings at Gault Field to battle it out. “We had a good response and were able to fill six teams for our first trial season,” says League Coordinator Michele Sapp.
In Memoriam: Bud Reidt
Adolph (Bud) Reidt passed peacefully into eternal rest with the Lord at the age of 92 on August 16, 2009 after a short illness.
Letter: Ruining water on Lake
I agree with a previous letter writer who said that the “wake enhancing rules” are not enforced. I ski two to four times a week and constantly see boats that are obviously carrying massive amounts of ballast, throwing giant wakes that ruin the whole Lake, which are never pulled over or cited.
Letter: Electronic communications
POA President Randall Bonner has offered a proposal designed to make the Internet the prime source of communication between the POA and Canyon Lake residents. He is asking all residents to provide their e-mail address to the POA. This, plan, I fear, will fail for several reasons.
Letter: Print and electronic
Technology is a way of life. High school graduates today don’t know life before the Internet. The younger generations of our community grew up with desktop and laptop computers through their formal education and is used by them daily in their working world.
Letter: Lived up to potential
It was with great delight we saw the photo and caption showing Greg Hedrick at age 17 (August 7, The Friday Flyer). He was described as “a young man who could do a lot toward the betterment of Canyon Lake.” How true those words have proved.
Letter: $100 not a burden?
n a recent article, Mayor Mary Craton and Councilman Barry Talbot stated that a $100 tax or fee was such a small amount for a business license for the real estate agents they did not believe it would be a burden.
Letter: Greenwald accident
I have been a resident of Canyon Lake for five years. I have driven Greenwald Rd. several times and have seen several accidents. I never thought it would happen to my husband and myself. We were going the speed limit at around 8 a.m. on July 19.

Labor Day reservations
Happy Camp Reservations for the Labor Day weekend (September 5 to 7) opened today, August 21. Residents must have a POA card and be a Member in Good Standing to make reservations, according to Campround Manager Dwight Cogdill. Reservations are not site specific but rather first come, first served – with two sites allowed per tract and lot.
Family Movie Night: 'Bedtime Stories'
The final Family Movie Night of the summer will be held tonight, August 21, at 8 p.m. at Holiday Harbor with the movie, “Bedtime Stories.” Families are invited to bring their own blankets, chairs and snacks. Released in December 2008 and starring Adam Sandler as Skeeter Bronson, “Bedtime Stories” is family comedy about a hotel handyman whose life changes when the lavish bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew start to magically come true.
Only three Taco Tuesdays left this summer!
The crowd at Taco Tuesday has been great this year, according to DJ Mike Shroyer, who watched the fun each week from his station on the Lodge patio. “From what I can see, all generations are coexisting. I see a lot of younger families, along with the retirement-age seniors, sitting at the tables and on the lawn and beach enjoying themselves. We have had nothing but a great response to Taco Del Mar’s food. Overall it is a very enjoyable and fun Taco Tuesday season!”
Learn new computer skills at Senior Center
For residents of all ages who desire a convenient way to expand their knowledge of computers and various applications, the POA is offering a new schedule of computer classes, beginning in September. Classes will be held at the Senior Center. They are limited to eight students and are open to all residents. Some classes fill up early, so register early at the Member Services desk, making checks payable to the Senior Committee.
Canyon Lake Car Show registration open
Registration forms are now available at the POA Members Services desk for the Canyon Lake Car Show, to be held October 3 in the Lodge parking lot. The show is for pre-’73 vehicles only. All entries must be by property owners or sponsored by a property owner. The $25 registration fee includes goodie bag and event T-shirt. The popular event will feature a DJ, breakfast burritos, barbecue lunch and vendors. As in past shows, a live auction and drawing will benefit the Progeria Foundation.
Find charters, documents at www.canyonlakepoa.com
The POA website, www.canyonlakepoa.com, makes it much easier for residents to get forms and documents to take care of business in Canyon Lake and to learn how the Association is governed. The links column on the left side of the home page has a section called “Document Center” that gives residents access to every document the POA provides.
Did You Know?: Community Parks
Did you know there are 15 parks throughout the community? Each of these parks is unique in its setting and the facilities available. Parks are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. April through September. During the fall and winter months, they close earlier. With two exceptions parks cannot be reserved; those who would like a special table or area just need to go to the park early to secure their spot.
ACCording to the ACC: Screening trash cans
Residents are expected to keep their trash containers stored out of sight from the street, Lake and Golf Course. The preferred method for screening the cans is with fencing, but if wrought iron fencing is used, the Committee recommends using mesh to match the wrought iron on all exposed sides. Many members have chain link fences, so “privacy slats” (available at most home improvement stores) work well for the exposed sides.
Rule of the Week: Gone fishin'
Among the many questions Marine Patrol receives, fishing questions are among the most numerous. Marine Patrol Rule 4d.2 covers the “fishing license” question. If you are 16 years old or over, you must have a California state fishing license to fish in Canyon Lake.
