Jace Febo, 5, is getting what his father, Tash Febo, calls "a fat ride" out in front of the Lighthouse and Lodge. "Jace just began wakeboarding this summer on a board he received for his 4th birthday and has been improving by leaps and bounds," says Tash. Jace's picture is included in The Friday Flyer series, "Canyon Lake Cuties."

This Week's Official CLPOA News

Bank takes new name, keeps familiar faces
Some say the economy is showing signs of recovery. But it didn’t look that way to Canyon Lakers who checked their Guaranty Bank accounts last weekend and learned the neighborhood bank had been taken over by BBVA Compass – a financial institution most had never heard of.

City Connection: Committee making plans to honor veterans
The City of Canyon Lake’s recently-formed Veterans Day committee, chaired by Councilmember Nancy Horton, has been busy planning for what Nancy says will be a “wonderful tribute to our veterans and service people” on November 11, at 10:30 a.m. in front of City Hall.

City Connection: CLPD chief explains noise, curfew ordinances
The City of Canyon Lake has two ordinances on the books to help curtail criminal activity and streamline the prosecution of violators. Canyon Lake Municipal Code Section 11.30.040 and 11.30.040 addresses loud and disturbing noise. Section 11.16.010 addresses nighttime juvenile curfew restrictions after 10 p.m. and before 6 a.m.

City Connection: 'Thunder'-ous end to Library's summer program
Canyon Lake youngsters and their families enjoyed a double treat on Wednesday, August 19 at the Library. The first was a visit by “Thunder,” of the Lake Elsinore Storm, who chatted with patrons in the Library and gave out tickets to the next ball game. Following Thunder’s appearance, juggler David Cousins performed amazing feats in the City Multi-purpose Room by juggling bowling pins, fireballs, monster tennis balls and more.

City Connection: Reward offered for Lake House arson fire information
The Canyon Lake City Council has authorized a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for the fire that occurred at the Lake House on Saturday, July 18.Riverside County Fire investigators have determined arson as the cause of that fire, which was reported at 4:44 a.m., just one day after another fire leveled a Towne Center building that housed a total of nine businesses, including another bar, the Sports Stop.

City Connection: News and notes
The Canyon Lake City Council holds regular meetings the first Wednesday of each month, with the next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Services and POA Boardroom. Canyon Lake Crime Stats: August 4 - August 17, 2009

Festive crowd turns out for Marine Band show
Although it could more aptly be named “Concert Under the Setting Sun,” last Saturday’s Concert Under the Stars at Indian Beach lived up to its hype of being a beloved community tradition since 1982, with an estimated 500 community members in attendance to hear the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Band of Twentynine Palms, led by Chief Warrant Officer Steve Giove.

Blaze devours family history but not family spirit
There is a certain irony in the story Christine Greer and Richard Beck tell about the fire that consumed their law office on July 17 in the Towne Center. Among the items lost were 150-year-old family records, photographs, love letters and memorabilia belonging to Richard’s mother that they brought to Canyon Lake a month earlier to safeguard from what they believed to be a greater fire threat at Richard’s family home in Pacific Palisades.

Rescue adds new dimension to family vacation
Two young women from Canyon Lake, Shawna and Kelli Berry, were instrumental in saving the life of a 53-year-old man who nearly drowned near Yosemite’s Vernal Falls on July 20. According to their mom, Lisa Berry, the family was camping in Yosemite as part of 10-year tradition that included an annual hike to Vernal Falls, sometimes with the sisters’ dad, Phil, and sometimes with friends.

40th anniversary of Apollo 11 brings out treasure trove of memories and autographs for one resident
On July 20, Americans celebrated the 40th anniversary of the day astronauts from Apollo 11 walked on the moon and Neil Armstrong uttered the famous statement, “That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.” Canyon Lake resident Velta Nichols watched the newspaper and TV coverage of the anniversary with great interest, recalling the part she played in that historic event as one of only two women to be involved in the Apollo manufacturing program at North American Rockwell.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Inglourious Basterds'
In this World War II epic, historical facts aren’t portrayed as remembered. Maybe we were absent that day from school, but more than likely, writer-director Quentin Tarantino makes up so much even Oliver Stone is flabbergasted. QT’s goal is to make the audience feel innocent about guilty pleasures, but the title isn’t even spelled right . . . is it?

Mom About Town: New column will explore activities for kids
The Friday Flyer welcomes a new columnist, stay-at-home mom Betsy Semmens. She is the mother of Cole, 7, and Riley, 3, and wife of Bryan, a certified public accountant. Betsy spent her teen years in Lake Elsinore, often visiting friends in Canyon Lake and dreaming of one day living here. Her dream came true in March of this year.

Canyon Lake Cuties
This photo feature, “Canyon Lake Cuties,” gives parents the opportunity to take pictures of their kids, 5 years of age and younger, while they are out and about in Canyon Lake. Some choose not to provide their child’s name; however, the child’s age and the parent’s (photographer’s) first and last name are required. Digital photos are preferred and may be sent to news@goldingpublications.com. Please attach photo as a .jpg.

It's a Dog's Life
Canyon Lakers love their dogs. Anywhere people go, canine friends can usually be found – in cars, trucks, golf carts and boats. Some dogs make their presence known more than others, usually by barking. But some are just so darn cute they catch the eye of camera bugs like Bert Barbay and randomly show up in the paper under this very irregular series known as “It’s a Dog’s Life.”

Announcement: Giant 'goldfish'
Fisherman Greg Ferris and his 4 lb. test line were both tested by this Koi carp when Greg hooked it on August 21 at Diamond Point Park. The fish weighed 12 lbs. but “had a 50-lb. heart,” says Greg, who took an hour and five minutes to reel it in. The big “goldfish” was happily returned to the Lake.

Announcement: First grandchild
Guy and Suzanne Kestell are proud to announce the birth of their first grandchild, Mia Lee Cyr, daughter of new Canyon Lake residents, Tim and Erin Cyr. Mia was born on July 28 at 2:55 a.m. at Rancho Springs Hospital. She weighed 6 lbs. 8 oz. and was 19 in. long. In addition to her grandparents, she was welcomed into the family by her Uncle Lee Kestell and Grandma Donna Cyr of Selah, Washington.

Announcement: Water GM to lead advocacy agency
The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District’s General Manager Ron Young has been elected to serve as the president of the California Association of Sanitation Agencies. He has been active in CASA for more than 20 years and spent the past year as the association’s 1st vice-president.

In Memoriam: Dorothy Bishop
Former resident Dorothy Walton Bishop passed away recently in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Letter: Thank you to Marine Patrol
A great big “thank you” to Marine Patrol. Earlier in August, during one of my Glastron boat’s plainings, the right half of the engine cover decided to go overboard and I didn’t discover it until several minutes later. I combed the entire Main Lake, didn’t find it and assumed it went to the bottom of the lake, although it has buoyant material that should have kept it surfaced.

Letter: Driving safety tip
My father taught Driver’s Ed in the summers. At the dinner table, he often “provided” me (a teenager approaching legal driving age) with numerous tips beyond nominal driver training. My interest (boring) and response (“yeah, yeah”) was typical for a teen. But one tip in particular has been truly useful. If your right tires slip off the pavement onto the shoulder, and there is a significant height difference, don’t immediately turn back to the pavement.

Letter: Emergency locator signs
Please take down those silly eyesores at the parks and return them to whichever tarmac they were taken from. If park identification is needed, I am sure the powers that be can come up with a better solution than those obnoxious signs. Here’s an idea: add a park name quiz to the boaters safety check.

Letter: Letter mostly incorrect
I don’t normally debate things in the press, but this is important to me. Although Mr. Carlton’s letter of August 21 is mostly incorrect, the part I want to address is that he stated that I charge the City mileage to drive from my home to City Hall. I have never charged this mileage.

Letter: Caveny's concert
The Marine Band concert Saturday night was a thing of beauty, as was the weather. We can all agree that Indian Beach is back in all its glory and a wonderful place to greet old friends. It was nice that the concert was given to honor John Zaitz’s wife and that Pepe’s provided the dinner for the band.

Letter: Solar solutions
I am sure everyone has gotten a letter from SCE about the cost of electricity going up almost 12 percent from last year. We can do something about this; it is called Community Choice Aggregation (CCA). CCA, as defined by AB 117, permits any city, county or city and county to aggregate the electric loads of residents, businesses and municipal facilities to facilitate the purchase and sale of electrical energy.

Arts and Entertainment
An ’80s Night dance party at the popular Falkner Winery on Thursday, September 10, will raise money to assist Canyon Lakers John and Wendy Rodriguez with the restoration of their business, VIP Events, destroyed in the July 17 Towne Center fire. The Falkner Winery, site of many events put on by VIP Events, is donating the use of its facility free of charge.

POA Agenda

One last Taco Tuesday!
The final Taco Tuesday of the summer is this coming Tuesday, September 1. Come out to enjoy the food, friends and music!

Learn new computer skills at Senior Center
For residents of all ages who desire a convenient way to expand their knowledge of computers and various applications, the POA is offering a new schedule of computer classes, beginning in September. Classes will be held at the Senior Center. They are limited to eight students each and are open to all residents. Some classes fill up early, so register early at the Member Services desk, making checks payable to the Senior Committee.

Car show sign-ups now open
Registration forms are now available at the POA Members Services desk for the Canyon Lake Car Show, to be held October 3 in the Lodge parking lot. The show is for pre-’73 vehicles only. All entries must be by property owners or sponsored by a property owner. The $25 registration fee includes goodie bag and event T-shirt.

Important notices
The POA website, www.canyonlakepoa.com, has a feature residents will find helpful for discovering timely information. It is called “Important Notices” and can be found on the website’s home page. Unlike the static information found on many of the pages, this page is updated as needed with new information. For example, the page currently lists “Disclosure of Litigation Matters” and “Neglected pools can transmit West Nile Virus.”

Residents can learn online how Association governs
The POA website, www.canyonlakepoa.com, makes it much easier for residents to get forms and documents to take care of business in Canyon Lake and to understand how the Canyon Lake Property Owners is organized and governed. The links column on the left side of the home page has a section called “Document Center” that gives residents access to every document the POA provides.

ACCording to the ACC: Setback definitions
The CC&Rs call for front, side and rear setback restrictions for all lots. Each numbered lot also includes a Community Setback, defined as the area between the curb line and the front line. The depth of this setback varies between four and 22 feet, depending on the width of the street in front of the lot.

Rule of the Week: Skier down
As the summer season wanes and boat traffic on the Lake subsides, Marine Patrol trusts that the weekly reminders on some of the more important Lake rules have been helpful to you. Marine Patrol Rule 7E.9 is an important rule for continuity and safety on the Lake.
