S.S. Canyon Lake

In all their travels, members of the Travel Club usually express their pleasure being back home in Canyon Lake - and no wonder with a setting like this for their annual poolside dinner-dance, "Aboard the SS Canyon Lake," held last Friday at the Lodge Pool. With members barely visible in the waning light, this scene was captured by club publicist Ron Kelly.

Lake faced with need for mussel prevention
The Lake is the heart of Canyon Lake, and like a human heart, it faces threats to its health that are silent and deadly without proper care and supervision. In some ways, it is already ill, according to water officials, with levels of particular nutrients that violate state water quality standards called TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load). Specialists contracted by the City of Canyon Lake already are researching ways to improve the health of the Lake and reduce TMDL by 2020.

Time to update Directory listings
The Golding Publications staff is preparing for the 2010 edition of Canyon Lake’s Residential Directory. With new escrows closed every month and, lately, foreclosures, it is a challenging task to keep the phone book current each year. Residents are reminded that being listed is not mandatory nor automatic.

Be cautious posting personal information online
I have friends who swear by online social and professional networks like Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn. Where else can you reconnect with long-lost former classmates, post vacation photos for friends around the world, share your resume with potential employers and perhaps even find love – all without leaving your couch? Although the Internet has made reaching out easier than ever, whenever you share personal information, a few cautions are in order.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: World traveler takes 'Fire and Ice' cruise
My 18-day July-August sojourn took me from LAX to New York, where 614 passengers and I boarded the Tahitian Princess for a cruise to the Arctic. Our first day out of New York was spent “settling in” and the second day we traveled the Atlantic Ocean on the way to our Arctic adventure. On day three, we docked at Halifax, Nova Scotia, often called the gateway to Canada.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Fun in the 'Big Apple'
Maria Volkoff and her grandson Brandon Sidley vacationed together in New York City, in July. They are pictured in “The Big Apple” at Times Square, which was among one of the many sites they visited that included Central Park, Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. They also traveled to West Point, Boston, Salem, Plymouth and other cities.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Gorgeous glacier
Dave and Barbara Spraul say they recently enjoyed a fabulous nine-day bus tour of the Canadian Rockies. They took a snow coach up a trail to where they are pictured on the 1,000-ft. thick Athabasca Glacier, part of the Columbia ice field.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: River Regatta
Team Happy Camp, consisting of residents Dave Clarke and Susan Clarke, their son Tyler and friend Jim Lytle, brother of Happy Camp Campground Manager Dwight Cogdill’s wife, Peggy, headed to Bullhead, Arizona, and competed in relay games and floating down the river as Team Happy Camp during the annual Bullhead City River Regatta.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'All About Steve'
If you don’t really embrace the chick-flick concept, run fast run far from Sandra Bullock’s latest romcom (romantic comedy), “All About Steve.” Actually, this is mostly about Sandy, who plays Mary Magdalene Horowitz, a cruciverbalist, which is a Latin word for “nerd.” Mary creates crossword puzzles for a Sacramento newspaper, but for some unknown reason, dresses as what appears to be a backup singer for ABBA.

Mom About Town: A recipe for memorable but easy family suppers
We still laugh about a standing dinnertime tradition when I was growing up. Mom would do the cooking and the serving and the washing up, but it was up to us to pour our own drinks. More often than not, only one of us would go to all the “trouble” it took to pour a drink, so hearing “please pass the corn . . . and the milk” was not uncommon.

In Memoriam: Mac McBride
Longtime resident “Mac” Leonard McBride, 90, passed away on September 9 from natural causes.

Letter: A great 'cruise'
We want to thank the Canyon Lake Travel Club for putting on such a great dinner dance. The cruise theme was so well planned. The photos as you entered the party set the mood for the evening. They were terrific pictures. The attention to details was outstanding – the cute sailors, the centerpieces, the food, the music, etc. We so enjoyed our cruise on the U.S.S. Canyon Lake. Again, we thank them for all of their efforts in planning a wonderful event.

Letter: Enough is enough
In regards to Marty Gibson being censured by three-fifths of the City Council . . . enough is enough! Doesn’t our City have bigger issues to deal with than trying to demean and defame one of our outstanding citizens? I will be the first to admit Marty may not have shown the best judgment in some of his decisions, but I know he has never done anything maliciously to harm our city or our community.

Letter: Ignored common sense
In regards to the City Council meeting at which the three members of the City Council voted to censure Marty Gibson – by far and away residents asked and pleaded with the three to quit their vendetta. Obviously, they had their minds made up and nothing would stop them. More than one resident lamented the fact they are making Canyon Lake the laughing stock of Riverside County.

Letter: Recycling for Relay
Thank you Canyon Lakers! Last May I was involved in a life-changing event, the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. This year I decided to get my fundraising started early. I created recycling trashcans (Recycle For Relay) and have been placing them at the public parks and beaches in an effort to collect cans and bottles that otherwise would have found their way to the landfill.

Suggestions sought for Lodge restaurant
The Lighthouse Restaurant study group is working towards a goal of opening the restaurant, according to Director Michelle Gordon, who says, “Community input is important in achieving this goal. We want to know ‘what you want.’ We need your thoughts and support as we go forward. Please take a few minutes and complete this survey and return it to the POA or you may go to our website (www.canyonlakepoa.com) and complete it online. Hopefully, when the restaurant is open, the entire community of Canyon Lake will support it.”

It's time to sign up for Car Show at the Lodge
Car enthusiasts proud of their pre-1973 autos and trucks are invited to register for the Canyon Lake Car Show and Cruise, to be held Saturday, October 3, in the Lodge parking lot. The fee to enter the car show is only $25, payable to the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association. It includes an event T-shirt and goodie bag. Car owners who would like to be parked next to each other should arrive together.

Ramona Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, a leader in home health and hospice care for Southwest Riverside County, will facilitate a new six-week bereavement support group to serve the residents of Canyon Lake, beginning Wednesday, September 23, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Towne Center Conference Room.

Director Reports
At the Board meeting each month, Directors provide information from POA committees on which they serve as liaisons. The following is a continuation of those reports.

CPC Communique: Dog days of summer
Currently, Canyon Lakers can take their dogs to Emerald Park, Harrelson Park, Lions Park and Eastport Park. Dogs are also allowed at the Campground and the Equestrian Center. Please remember that all dogs must be on a leash or confined within an owner’s property.

Community Patrol Log

Did You Know?: Community Relations Department formed
Did you know that, in July, the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association implemented a new structure in an effort to streamline operations to allow for better communication, service and availability to members? With the new structure came some title changes, including that of the new Community Relations Manager Laurie Owen, formerly the Corporate Administration Manager.

ACCording to the ACC: Dumpsters, PODs, etc.
It could be time to clean out that garage in order to find last year’s pool toys or extricate the badminton and croquet sets we use on the cooler evenings. But what to do with all the “junk” you don’t need anymore? Many of us find this is a good time to rent a dumpster; or, if you’re really serious about re-organizing the garage, a storage container.
