Dawn's splendor

Only early risers were treated to this dramatic autumn-colored sunrise, captured a week ago by Tuscany Hills resident Irma Covarrubias. The hot weather may say otherwise, but fall officially began on September 22.

Nancy Carroll, Canyon Lake’s Emergency Preparedness Committee director, was enjoying a much anticipated reunion trip with classmates from West Carrolton High School in Ohio when she started experiencing her own emergency situation – something she wasn’t prepared for. Every year Nancy and her classmates travel from their homes across the U.S. for a reunion trip. Nancy says she has known her high school friends for 55 years and has only missed one reunion trip.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Informant'
Leave it to Jason Bourne himself to uncover the most infamous price-fixing scheme in corporate history. But this time, Matt Damon plays a pudgy, corn-fed, corporate kiss-butt. Frankly, we were shocked, shocked to find that illegal activity was going on there. But, one theme a corporate underworld shares with an urban ghetto, "snitches get stitches."

Mom About Town: Here are handbag organization tips for busy moms
Earlier this week, I found myself in the middle of Costco with a broken nail, and all I wanted at that moment was a nail file. Luckily, my mother was there with her makeup bag and the ancient little metal nail file she has carried my entire life. It occurred to me that I really should have a nail file in my purse all the time. Actually, there are a lot of little things I really should have with me wherever I go – and I don’t. My purse is more likely to be full of action figures and doll brushes than anything useful in an emergency.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Sturgis Rally
Lynnelle Henderson says in January 2006, when her mother, Sheila Henderson, came up with the idea of having Canyon Lakers take The Friday Flyer on their travels, she might never have suggested it if she knew four years later her oldest daughter would take advantage of her idea while on a Harley motorcycle in Sturgis, South Dakota!

Letter: Water seminar
This letter is to invite all Canyon Lake residents to join the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA), Regions 8, 9 and 10, for its fourth annual joint fall event to be held this year in Lake Elsinore at the Diamond Club Restaurant.

Letter: Recreational vehicles in driveways
As I drove around Canyon Lake more than 10 years ago, I was glad to see boats, boat trailers, toy haulers, trailers and motorhomes in the driveways. I purchased my home because I could have my vehicles in my driveway and I would have convenient access. I wasn’t concerned what other communities permitted, I was only interested in what Canyon Lake allowed.

Letter: More on driveway storage
Chuck Marler says that whenever the issue of driveway storage is raised, the most common rebuttal is that Canyon Lake is a “recreational community.” Well, Chuck, it is.

Letter: TCHS Baseball carwash
On behalf of all the TCHS baseball players, I want to thank everyone who participated in the car wash this past weekend. It was a big success and will enable the baseball players to purchase their uniforms.

Letter: Paradise Classic
Last weekend the Canyon Lake Men’s Golf Club held its Paradise Classic Member Guest Golf Tournament. I’d like to thank the Men’s Club board, especially Tournament Director Terry Terhune, for hosting such a great event. The two-day Classic began Friday with each player receiving a dozen Titleist golf balls (half were Pro V1s) at a noon shotgun start.

Letter: Social fee for restaurant
In response to the Lighthouse Restaurant re-opening survey, I suggest there is an obvious answer to successfully operating an in-house restaurant in a private community. In gated communities all over the Coachella Valley, clubs have first-class restaurants primed by a fixed moderate Social Fee included in the annual homeowner’s assessment.

Letter: A.L.S. thanks Marty Gibson
We would like to thank Marty Gibson for helping in the past six years to raise money in the fight to find a cure for A.L.S. (Lou Gehrigís Disease).

Letter: Eastport berm
For years the pile of dredging waste has been piled up in the Eastport. The dredging, like many other projects in Canyon Lake, turned into a fiasco. It was a terrible eyesore for everyone. Finally, work started to pave the Eastport and I thought the pile of waste would finally disappear. That did not happen. Incredibly, the pile stayed.
