City Council votes to censure Gibson
“We just want you to be civil and courteous and you will get the same in return. We just want you to lighten up a little.” With that comment, Mayor Mary Craton was joined by Councilmember Barry Talbot and Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Horton in adopting Resolution 09-38 in a 3-1 vote censuring fellow Councilmember Marty Gibson at Wednesday night’s meeting and officially admonishing him “immediately to alter his behavior to conform to the City’s Code of Conduct without delay or to consider resignation from the City Council.”

City Connection: Committee making plans to honor veterans
The City of Canyon Lake’s recently-formed Veterans Day committee, chaired by Councilmember Nancy Horton, has been busy planning for what Nancy says will be a “wonderful tribute to our veterans and service people” on November 11, at 10:30 a.m. in front of City Hall.

City Connection: Library's tile wall fundraiser placed on hold
In a surprise turn of events for Ceramics To Go, owned by Judy and Jim Randle, their sub-lease at The Surfer Bean Coffee Shop was lost due to the sale of the coffee shop on August 31. Judy and Jim Randle say they are sorry to announce that the Canyon Lake Library Tile Wall Fundraiser will need to be placed on hold.

City Connection: Don't leave vehicles for sale in City parking lots
Residents are reminded that, while it might seem like the ideal location to advertise their vehicle or boat for sale, it is a citable offense under the Canyon Lake Municipal Code to leave those items in the Canyon Lake Towne Center parking lot as well as any other public parking lot within City boundaries or on any public street outside the gates.

City Connection: CLEPC working hard to keep pets safe, too
A major goal of the Emergency Preparedness Committee last year was to develop a pet safety program, with Mayor Mary Craton taking the lead on the project. This includes a pet census designed to help the CLEPC protect pets during a disaster and determine shelter needs.

City Connection: Farmers' Market expands to include kids' craft center
In addition to the regular farmers, growers, fresh food and other vendors, the Farmers’ Market is also now the place for local kids to have fun while learning about recycling. According to Robin Ramirez of Second Chance Textiles, the company is now offering a recycle craft center where kids can make crafts from new, used and recycled items, all while learning about the importance of reducing waste and reusing materials whenever possible.

City Connection: News and notes
Councilmember Marty Gibson and Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Horton hold regular office hours at City Hall; residents are invited to stop in to discuss topics of importance, ask questions or request information. Marty is available every other Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m., with the next time scheduled for next Tuesday, September 8.

Brain book a ' no brainer' for local instructor
Debbi Harper has been an employee of Canyon Lake POA since 2003. She teaches water aerobics and the Fish Out of Water classes with Maria Dagostino and Pool Manager Val Grillo. For the past 25 years, Debbi has also been developing and teaching “wellness programs.” Her wellness customers have included insurance groups, hospitals, medical groups and government organizations.  She currently lectures at more than 40 colleges throughout the United States.

Switzerland serves up sporting opportunity
For some professional athletes, the opportunity to play in America can be very limited, which was the case for professional volleyball player and Canyon Laker Jennifer Senftleben. She is pursuing her indoor volleyball career this season in Glarus, Switzerland, playing for VBC Glaronia, an international indoor volleyball club team.

Pismo Beach golf getaway
Ninety-two residents of Canyon Lake, of which 75 were golfers, escaped the Canyon Lake heat and went on a golf outing to beautiful Pismo Beach, California. The outing was organized by Joe Kamashian and Fran Pothier but was not affiliated with any of the local clubs. The group stayed at the Oxford Suites Hotel for three nights and played two rounds of golf at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.

Looking Back: What happened in September of past years?
In 1974, local residents were concerned over security in the Campground and officials were planning to curtail issuance of keys to the North and East Gates. A dune buggy was purchased in order to better patrol the perimeter of the fledgling gated community. The POA Bard passed resolutions barring use of vehicles within Canyon Lake’s private streets unless the operator was properly licensed and qualified under the California Vehicle Code.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Final Destination'
“The Final Destination” is a specifically unique movie; just like the other three. It is a flimsy excuse to graphically illustrate violent and gruesome death scenes doled out by the fickle finger of fate. Now, in eye-gouging 3-D, this is the final chapter of creatively sick minds. Having said that, we’re actually disappointed this is “The” “Final Destination.”

Mom About Town: With MOPS, moms don't need to feel isolated
When my son Cole was born, my best friend told me to find a MOPS group. “Mother of Preschoolers?” I thought. “But my son isn’t in preschool yet!” Turns out MOPS is for moms of children from birth to 5 years old and there was a group right in Canyon Lake I could check out.

Time to update directory listings
The Golding Publications staff is preparing for the 2010 edition of Canyon Lake’s Residential Directory. With new escrows closed every month and, lately, foreclosures, it is a challenging task to keep the phone book current each year. Residents are reminded that being listed is not mandatory nor automatic.

Pictured in back are Coach Scott Brophy, Ryan Cameron, Dillon Brophy, Manager Ric Sisco, Tanner Allen, Marino Rojas, Brad Henderson, Neil Crum, Coach Keith Henderson and Coach Ceasar Gardea. Bill Faulds was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on November 10, 1927, the youngest of five children.

In Memoriam: Marion Keeler
Marion R Keeler, 87, passed away August 28, 2009.

Letters to the Editor
California government’s imposed water crisis has been inspired by an environmental lobby that is literally choking Southern California and damaging some of the nation’s best farmland. After decades of developing one of the best water delivery systems in the world, the purveyors of water have had the faucet turned off without a visible fight.

Arts and Entertainment
An ’80s Night dance party at the popular Falkner Winery on Thursday, September 10, will raise money to assist Canyon Lakers John and Wendy Rodriguez with the restoration of their business, VIP Events, destroyed in the July 17 Towne Center fire. ArtThe Falkner Winery, site of many events put on by VIP Events, is donating the use of its facility free of charge.

Many thanks go to the Fiesta Day Committee members for their dedication and hard work.

Counsel provides disclosure of selected litigation matters affecting Association
The Association has determined certain claims made against or by the Association in various pending matters may be material to the interests of the Association’s members. This memorandum advises the members of the existence of these claims. This memorandum does not disclose cases brought against the Association that are considered minor (typically, small-claims or limited-jurisdiction matters).

Rule of the Week: Am I old enough to drive a boat?
One of the most frequently asked questions Marine Patrol receives is, “How old do you have to be to drive a boat?”

President's Report
POA President Randy Bonner gave a shorter report at Tuesday night’s Board meeting, stating that he provided more thorough reports in months past to answer the question members were asking as to “What do Directors do anyway?” Now that constituents are more aware of the duties, he feels he can give more compact reports.

Controller's Report
This report includes a brief description on the variances in the budget for three months ending July 31, 2009. The variances described are on the last line of the chart on Page A-6 and are labeled “(Over)/Under Budget.” For the purposes of this analysis, each area that exceeded a $15,000 and five percent variance in either direction is being discussed.

ACCording to the ACC: Dock installation, maintenance
Submitted plans must show the placement of all proposed structures and be adequately dimensioned so the installation can be checked for accuracy of location. There must also be an accurate profile showing the present condition of the slope (if any), the location of the dock, the method of anchorage (cable ties are required for most) and the provision for keeping the dock near to the shore at all elevations of the Lake.
