Flooded

This week's hard copy issue of The Friday Flyer had to go to press Thursday morning, before the heavy rainfall of Thursday's storm and the runoff into the Lake that forced the closure of the North Causeway by mid-afternoon Thursday. The Lake began flowing over the dam early Thursday morning; EVMWD opened the floodgates at 7 a.m. A number of new photographs of the flooding have been submitted by residents and can be found here. This photo was taken by Ruben Flores Thursday evening when it looked like Community Patrol was about to close the Main Causeway; however, the Main Causeway never was completely closed. The North Causeway and Railroad Canyon Rd. at Salt Creek remained closed as of noon Friday. It was anticipated RRC Rd. might be opened by mid-afternoon Friday. The City of Canyon Lake declared a local emergency and an Emergency Operation Center (EOC) was opened at City Hall Thursday afternoon, led by General Manager Lori Moss and manned by volunteers from the Emergency Preparedness Committee. For updated conditions, call City Hall at 244-2955.

Storms topple trees, flood streets, fill Lake
While the rains were far from over at the time of publication – and yesterday’s storm was predicted to be the worst of all – it still isn’t clear whether this week’s series of storms brought the type of historic weather event the California Water Science Center predicted when it said in part, “The next two to three weeks (at least) are likely to be more active across California than any other two- to three-week period in recent memory.

Movie Review: 'The Lovely Bones'
Based on the bestselling novel by Alice Sebold, director Peter Jackson (“Lord of the Rings”) uses his remarkably creative and imaginative palette to help us comprehend the incomprehensible. This isn’t really a “whodunit.” The neighborhood sociopath murders a young teenage girl, as her mournful family learns how to cope with their horrifying loss.

Day Tripping with Mary: No need for rainy day blues with these ideas
Rain, rain, go away, come again another day! I enjoy a day or two of rain and I know we need all the precipitation we can get in Southern California; but for me, after about one day, staying at home loses its charm! I have compiled a few ideas from my own experiences, keeping a small budget in mind, on how to cure the rainy day blues.

Mom About Town: Day-to-day activities can be made more meaningful
I have spent the last week absolutely enchanted with the ideas in Alexandra Stoddard’s “Living a Beautiful Life,” which I happened upon at a thrift store. Best dollar I ever spent!

Letter: Keep the golf pro
I would like to say how disappointed I am with a few of the current POA Board members. At the last POA meeting it was mentioned that all contracts would be going out to bid. This included Golf Professional Dave Lindeman and staff.

Letter: Golf Course Master Plan
We are simply astounded at the conceived so-called “Master Plan” of the Golf Course. What reason does the POA Board have for its more-than-$62,000 expenditure (not including its implementation) at this economically stressed time?

ACCording to the ACC...
Standing at the kitchen window, I was the first to see it go. Crack! There went an otherwise healthy eucalyptus branch – snapped like a cheap toothpick. I was so taken aback by the first limb I didn’t see the second one snap. I don’t even know when the third limb jumped ship. This week’s wind and rain has wreaked some havoc in the neighborhoods of Canyon Lake.
