Anna Fox is Canyon Lake's new librarian.

City Connection: New librarian takes charge at Canyon Lake Library

Anna Fox has been around books most of her adult life. For years the Fontana resident helped managed bookstores in the Crown Books and Borders chains. But she says it wasn’t until recently she found her true calling working in libraries. This month Anna was named branch manager of the recently expanded Canyon Lake Library.
She has worked in the Riverside County Library system for three years, most recently in Sun City. She graduated in December with a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State. She sees a library as an extremely valuable community resource, especially in tough economic times and a technology-driven world.
“I’ve been around books for about 20 years, but I’ve enjoyed working in libraries because they are so customer friendly,” she says. “There’s too much information out there. People rely on library staff to help narrow it down.”
Coming to Canyon Lake, Anna takes over a library that recently expanded its footprint by 50 percent. An additional 850 square feet has paved the way for about 1,000 new items (books, periodicals, electronic items and music), 12 new computer stations, an upgraded teen area and a new children’s section. The expansion was made possible by a grant from the City that pays the $10,000 annual lease for the added space as well as janitorial and maintenance services.
The expansion also was made possible by contributions from Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone, Southern California Edison, the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club, Friends of Canyon Lake Library and Canyon Car Company.
Anna says she plans to continue many of the same library programs as her predecessor, including Preschool Story Time. The Library is taking signups through the month of January for a contest during February called “Smart Investing Your Library.” Participants will start with $1,000 of virtual money and, by following the tips given in the website – provided once the game starts – they try to increase the amount. Winners will win prizes, including a notebook computer, flash drives, a graphing calculator and investing books. Sign up at the Canyon Lake Library.
Upcoming events for February include Pajama Story Time on Monday, February 1, at 6 p.m. The theme will be “Chinese New Year.”
Preschool Story Time will be held Friday, February 5, at 11 a.m. with the theme, “Come Aboard the Heartland Express.” Mardi Gras will be the theme for Preschool Story Time on Friday, February 19, at 11 a.m.
An adult event is planned for Monday, February 22, at 4 p.m. when IRS speaker Lori Cacioppo will be talking about “Better Business Through Better Records.”
     The Canyon Lake Library is located at 31516 Railroad Canyon Rd. It is open Monday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 244-9181.
