Residents view initial Golf Course Master Plan
There are two groups of people in Canyon Lake who care most about what happens to the Golf Course: those who play on it and those who live on it. Since that’s quite a significant percentage of residents, it’s no surprise seats were filled in the City Multi-purpose Room for the September 22 presentation of the first revision in the Golf Course Master Plan.

City Connection: Learn 'State of the City' at special luncheon

It’s October and, in conjunction with Halloween, two special events are planned. City Connection: CERT training will be offered October 15 to 17
Many Canyon Lake residents are not radio operators; however, they have a desire to help their community in the event of a disaster. They can come to regular meetings of the Emergency Preparedness Committee on the first Thursday of the month, and/or they can get more intensive training through a certified program called Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

City Connection: Realtor's Report
The following article was provided to The Friday Flyer by City Manager Lori Moss. Gene Wunderlich is the Director of Government Affairs for the Southwest Riverside County Association of Realtors. Business Showcase: Bow Wow Bath celebrates grand opening this weekend
Few business owners can say their dog helped them start their business. In the case of the Pentz family, however, their dog, Huff, was the reason they started their new business, Bow Wow Bath, which is celebrating its grand opening this weekend. Bow Wow Bath is a place where pet owners can take their pet for self-service grooming. Toys and treats will be given away during the grand opening.

Arts and Entertainment: Open Studios Tour, Western Barbecue and more

Arts and Entertainment: In concert, stars below outshone stars above
The planet Jupiter, low in the eastern sky over Indian Beach, competed with a full moon for attention last Saturday night at the Canyon Lake Community Theatre and Performing Arts Association’s concert “Under the Stars with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber” – until the Association’s stars emerged and brought the audience’s attention back to an unadorned stage.

Day-tripping with Mary: Relish a day of wine and butterflies in Temecula
Now is a great time to visit Temecula wineries, as the vines are ripe with plump, purple grapes ready for harvest. Recently, my husband and I combined a visit to two of the local wineries, along with watching a butterfly release at the nearby Pala Casino.

Movie Review: 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps'
Some say in professional sports if you aren’t cheating, you aren’t trying. During the savings and loan scandal of the ’80s, Gordon Gekko boasted, “Greed is good.” He taught such a valuable lesson, we now have entered the dawn of a new error; an even more devastating fiscal crises. Gekko now suggests the mother of all evil is speculation.

Teams to honor councilman at Relay for Life
Residents whose lives have been touched by cancer are invited to come out for the 8th annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life next Saturday and Sunday, October 9 and 10, at the Canyon Lake Middle School track. Even those not participating with a team are invited to come for the day and evening to enjoy the dancing, music, vendors and Luminaria Ceremony.

Titans coming home for four straight games
The Temescal Canyon High School Titans faced off against a tough Fountain Valley High School two weeks ago and, despite a great effort by Canyon Lake’s junior back Michael Shepherd, who rumbled down the field for 210 yards and two scores, the Titan Varsity came up just short of winning the game – Titans 14, Fountain Valley 21.

JWC Chili Cook-off looking for cooks, tasters

Letter: Editor's Note
In the interest of giving City Council candidates a chance to respond to Letters to the Editor containing perceived misinformation about their candidacy, letters about specific candidates will not be accepted after the October 15 issue of The Friday Flyer.

Letter: Disillusioned
I would like to express my frustration, disappointment and disillusionment with living here. I purchased a bank owned home on the water three months ago, spent a great deal of time, money and effort to make it beautiful and no longer an eyesore. I was excited to move in.

Letter: Response to letters
Two letters last week were from confused people. The first lamented the loss of Dave, regardless of “all” homeowners’ support. News alert to the Gammills: the committee was not stacked. They asked each candidate the same questions and made an impartial decision.

Letter: Candidates considered
I have examined the choices available to us in the upcoming election to our City Council. I respect the desire of each candidate to serve our community – Mary Craton for wanting to continue to serve; Randy Bonner for wanting to return in a leadership role; Richard Beck for desiring to bring a new perspective to City government and John Zaitz’ commitment to financial discipline.

Letter: Need to make changes
I have lived in Canyon Lake over 21 years and still enjoy it. In the last several years, things have changed. There is bickering in the City Council and we’re operating our City in the red. We’re facing an election in a few weeks. I believe we need to make changes . . .

Letter: A right to know
I’ve found actions of elected representatives consistent. Our Boards regularly withhold truth/half-truths and consistently make decisions behind closed doors that should be openly discussed ($350,000 computer contract to two guys working in their garage. We lost $500,000 before it failed).

Letter: City Manager Salary clarification
Last week’s letter to the editor regarding the salary of City Manager Lori Moss indicated she is a part-time employee. That is technically correct, but to clarify, Lori is on contract with the City for 36 hours per week.

Announcement: Locks of Love
Trevor Novins, son of Christy and Mark Novins of Canyon Lake, recently parted with the long hair he has been growing for two years to donate to Locks of Love, according to Diana Mackie of Salon Silque, who says she had the privilege of cutting Trevor’s hair. Diana reminds Canyon Lakers that Locks of Love accepts healthy, non-processed hair in lengths of 10 in. or more.

For example, if you are going 46 mph in a 35-mph zone, that would be 11 miles per hour over the speed limit and subject to a $125 fine.

Play at the YMCA: Preschoolers 'pump it up' on outings
In addition to their regular games and crafts at Blue Bird Hall, the YMCA pre-schoolers have been out and about lately. Last week they took a field trip to "Pump it Up" in Murrieta, pictured here, and on September 30 had a park day at Holiday Harbor.
