Fall splendor

Many water sports enthusiasts have to give up their sports in the fall, when changing leaves usually signal chilly weather. But despite a few pumpkin-colored leaves along the shoreline of Canyon Lake, there's still plenty of activity in the North Ski Area, as seen in this picture by Jerry McMaster.

Mary Craton and Randy Bonner have been elected to fill two open seats on the Canyon Lake City Council.

Celebrate veterans on Thursday
Canyon Lakers will have the opportunity to honor veterans and active-duty service members at a Veterans Day Ceremony in the Towne Center on Thursday, November 11, beginning at 10 a.m.

It's time for giving and helping hands
“Turkey Day” is arriving early in Canyon Lake! That’s because today, from 1 to 5 p.m., residents are invited to bring a frozen turkey to City Hall to give “HOPE” to those less fortunate in the upcoming holidays. The acronym for the charitable organization, Helping Our People in Elsinore, is especially fitting at this time of year as area families affected by the economic times are finding themselves in need of basic food items.

City Connection: First manager recalls challenges of new city
In recognition of the 20th anniversary of incorporation of the City of Canyon Lake, Jeff Butzlaff, the man who was hired to serve as the City’s first City Manager, wrote the following letter to City staff, the Mayor and residents of Canyon Lake. There’s usually something new to try at the Canyon Lake Farmers Market. Rebecca’s Mexican Entrees offers steaming chicken verde, tamales, burritos and nachos. Abigail’s Smokehouse is selling a variety of smoked fish and Alaskan salmon. A local artisan offers ceramics, pottery and silver.

Chamber Notes
A U.S. Border Patrol agent will be the guest speaker at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon on November 10. In addition, Monica Argandona will be speaking in support of HR 4303, a bill that Congressman Darrell Issa introduced to save the Agua Tibia Wilderness. In honor of Veterans Day, all veterans will receive a flag.

CFC celebrates grand opening and ribbon cutting
Canyon Fitness Center celebrated its grand opening in grand style on October 16 with activities for members and guests. More than 250 people enjoyed the celebration, which included a DJ, who rocked the house from 4 p.m. until midnight, food, jumpers, face painting and balloons for the kids.

Plan ahead to enter the Parade of Lights
The annual Parade of Lights, also known as the Boat Parade, is only a few weeks away on Saturday, December 11. Organizers say now is a good time to plan on putting a boat in the parade.

The California Fertilizer Foundation (CFF) presented a $1,200 School Garden Grant to Canyon Lake Middle School’s Special Education teacher Adina Ross during a special ceremony on October 14, attended by representatives of Senator Bill Emmerson and 66th District Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries.

Cliff Miller is proving to family and friends that it takes more than a concussion, collapsed lung, ruptured spleen, six broken ribs, a broken clavicle, scapula and arm to slow down an “adrenaline junkie.”

Announcement: Car of the Month
The Canyon Lake Car Club named Rolly and Joan Bittermann’s newly restored Nash Metropolitan as Car of the Month. Rolly explains he wasn’t planning to fix up a car, but his brother-in-law, Robert Amick of Pearblossom, California, had purchased six Metropolitans in order to restore the one he was building from the ground up.

Nail artist nails big win
Nail artists at Letting Go Salon in the Towne Center are excited about their nail art wins at recent competitions in Long Beach, Las Vegas, Florida and Sacramento. Since the salon opened, the nail artists have won five awards for their creative designs.

Alfred K Smith passed away October 27, 2010 at Menifee Hospital.

Main Gate to be closed for roadwork two days next week
People heading to work and parents taking their kids to school out the Main Gate will want to make a note that Cooley Construction is planning to close the Main Gate for two days to perform grinding and capping on the roadway. The dates of closure are Wednesday and Thursday, November 10 and 11, between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Board Recap for November 2010
The Board of Directors met for regular session Tuesday, November 2. Present were President Chuck Newsom, Vice-President David Johnston, Treasurer Michelle Gordon, Secretary Paul Chenette and Director Steve Salazar.

At the Lodge: Bar and Grill to open for Thursday games
The Lighthouse Bar and Grill will start opening its doors for NFL games on Thursday nights, beginning November 11.

Country Club: Make reservations for Thanksgiving Buffet
The Country Club is now taking reservations for the Thanksgiving Buffet on Thursday, November 25. Two seatings will be offered: the first from 12 to 2 p.m. and the second from 3 to 5 p.m.

Classes and Activities: Dog training classes begin today at Eastport
A new course of Dog Training begins today, November 5, at Eastport Park. Classes are taught by Custom Canine Training and are held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Classes will meet for six weeks on Fridays, except Thanksgiving weekend.

Classes and Activities: Learn to paint
Learn to paint this wintry scene this Sunday, November 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Pool View Room at the Lodge. There needs to be at last four signups per class; a maximum of 12 will be accepted.

Mummies' day out
Moms and other good sports got turned into "mummies" during one of the Halloween activities for YMCA kids last Thursday at Blue Bird Hall.

The Senior Center is gearing up for its very popular Holiday Boutique on Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Planning and Compliance: This is the best time to install docks
This is the prime time of year to install and maintain docks. The water level is low and the work should come easier. Anytime a member makes repairs or installs new docks, the Planning and Compliance Department requires an application and plans indicating the scope of work to be performed.
