Under the rainbow

Black skies brightened by a rainbow, a muddy, flood-swollen lake offset by the golden leaves and green lawns of nearby landscape – this photograph by Gail McCollom is a fitting picture for one of the last weekends of 2010 – a year that has been filled with highs and lows in a community still considered by most residents to be "a little bit of paradise."

POA, City leaders look back on 2010 - Property Owners Association
Canyon Lake – “What a nice place to live.” This is a quote from my wife, Carol, while we were driving home and observing the new roads, the Christmas lights and thinking about all the wonderful people who live here.

POA, City leaders look back on 2010 - City of Canyon Lake
The first note in my January 2010 calendar mentions a visit by Brian Nestande, our California state legislative representative, to the Senior Center. Unprompted, he said Canyon Lake is the most efficient city in Riverside County because we outsource our departments, police and fire. With two paid full-time employees, and a part-time city manager, we are as lean as we can get.

Here are a few highlights from 2010
2010 year in review.

Residents photograph search and recovery efforts
The accident that occurred when a car was washed into the East Bay off Goetz Rd. at Salt Creek in the early morning hours of December 22 was not the first time such an event has happened at that location, but hopefully it is the last.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'True Grit' and 'Gulliver's Travels'
This holiday double feature includes a remake of “True Grit,” an old-fashioned Western, and just one more in a line of remakes to the centuries’ old novel, “Gulliver’s Travels.”

Cook's Corner: New Year's black-eyed peas
Feeling lucky? If tradition has anything to do with it, the wish for a prosperous New Year may be helped along by eating a few black-eyed peas.

Letter: Generous Lion
Recently during a visit to the Canyon Lake general meeting of Lions by the district governor and his vice-president, a request was made for a Lion(s) to help fund the Lions International New Year Rose Parade Float.

Letter: Flooding
It appears Mr. Wicke and the water company do not understand what “flooding” does to the citizens of Canyon Lake and the Association and the City who work hard to keep a beautiful place.

Letter: Kudos to the Country Club
We would like to thank Marcie Nordman and her staff at the Country Club restaurant for their wonderful assistance for our daughter’s graduation dinner party on December 17.

Letter: Celebrating Ed Tucker's life
My husband, Ed Tucker, passed away on November 22. On December 18 we celebrated Ed’s life with family and friends at the Canyon Lake Country Club. In spite of rainy weather, we had a great turnout and everyone had a good time as we reflected on wonderful memories and funny stories.

Letter: Christmas thief
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the thief that stole my granddaughters’ brand new sleds they got for Christmas. My daughter and her husband were taking them up to Big Bear Sunday morning to play in the snow for the first time in their lives. I told Riley to put the sleds in the back of my truck Saturday night so we would not run off without them, not realizing that my truck was down on the street.

Letter: Above and beyond
I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the award and recognition presented to me at the annual Women’s Golf Club Christmas installation and awards presentation.

Letter: Let voices be heard
It has been more than six months since the POA Directors authorized an audit of Sierra records, ESP (banquet) records and the Reserve Accounts. What is the status of these three audits? How long has the Franchise Tax Board been auditing our records and what have they found?

Letter: Waterfront lights
Bob Templeton, commodore of the Yacht Club, advised the Home Owners Club that, due to the extreme rain and Lake condition, they were unable to go out on the Lake to judge the waterfront lights. He apologized for any inconvenience this may have caused waterfront homeowners.

In Memoriam: Glen King
Glen E. King, 54, a former resident of Canyon Lake, died suddenly on December 26 at his home in Newaygo, Michigan.

Photo of the Week: Adios to 2010
In this photo by Yvonne Walsh of one of the most colorful evenings of 2010, Santa appears to be "riding into the sunset" – a fitting symbol for New Year's Eve as the holidays and 2010 come to a close.

Did you Know? What's to know about leasing in Canyon Lake?
Here is information for homeowners who have decided to lease out their home in Canyon Lake to others:

Planning and Compliance: Planning to rent a dumpster or POD?
With the New Year, many people make resolutions. One of them could be to clean out the garage or the inside of the house. But what to do with all that stuff? This may be a good time to rent a dumpster, or, if you’re really serious about reorganizing the garage, a storage container.

Resolve to get fit at Boot Camp
“While it’s obvious to most that proper diet and exercise are the master keys to weight loss, health and fitness, there is one thing to ensure success in these areas in 2011: make it fun!” says Canyon Lake resident and Total Commitment owner Leslie Kahn. “At the end of the day, what you do has got to be fun or you just won’t stick with it.” Leslie teaches the Boot Camp classes and invites everyone to give the class a try for free.

Classes and Activities: Last day for 5K/10K early-bird discount
Members of the Fitness and Recreation Committee would like to remind residents this is the last day to get the early bird discount for participating in the Fit Community 5K/10K event on Saturday, January 22. Other classes and activities can also be found here.

Classes and Activities: Learn to paint
Rita Forand's painting classes are continuing at the Lodge. The POA will sponsor an oil painting class to paint this wintry scene on Sunday, January 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Pool View Room at the Lodge.

Classes and Activities: Computer classes
The POA is offering a new schedule of computer classes that begin in January. Register at Member Services, making checks payable to the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association.

Member Memos
Useful information for residents and members of the POA.

Guests can be 'called in' on POA website
During the busy holiday season, members are reminded they don't have to wait until business hours to call in a guest; they can "call in" a guest on the website any time of the day or night. However, is important to input guest information on the website at least 24 hours prior to the guest’s arrival. This will allow staff time to process the request during normal business hours.

Call police for crime
Some residents have a misunderstanding about the Association’s role in its contract with Allied Barton Community Patrol services.

Marine Patrol/Community Patrol says...
The Marine Patrol would like to remind residents of Rules and Regulations IV-D.2 and 3, which states: A California State Fishing License (for those over the age of 16) is required for fishing in Canyon Lake.
