Heroes heeded call to work in Haiti
By now, most people have seen or read the statistics for the 7.0 earthquake that destroyed Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on January 12 and killed more than 200,000 people. But Fire Captain Ron Horetski and Paramedic Lewis Francescon, both of Canyon Lake, saw the devastation firsthand when they were deployed with the Los Angeles County Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue Task Force on January 13. The 72-member team returned to a heroes’ welcome on January 27.

Those following Canyon Lake teen Tori Kelly on “American Idol” caught a glimpse of her on Tuesday night during “Hollywood Week.” Newest judge, Ellen DeGeneres, toyed with Tori and three others on stage before telling them they had made it through to the next round.
City Connection: City Manager discusses Housing Element Law
State law recognizes the vital role local governments play in the supply and affordability of housing. Each governing body (city council or board of supervisors) of a local government in California is required to adopt a comprehensive, longterm general plan for the physical development of the city. The housing element is one of the seven mandated elements of the local general plan.
City Connection: CLPD reports results of February 7 deployment
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department scheduled an “Avoid the 30” deployment for each of its contract cities, including Canyon Lake, on Super Bowl Sunday. With two deputies deployed in Canyon Lake from 2 to 10 p.m., CLPD made 19 vehicle stops and gave two field sobriety tests.

A new “Inland Empire 511” service to assist commuters and motorists is live and available to the public, thanks to the efforts of the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), in partnership with San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG).

There's a lot going on at the Canyon Lake Library
A lot of activities have been taking place at the Canyon Lake Library; however, the Library is closed today, February 12, for Lincoln’s Birthday, and Monday, February 15, for President’s Day. Look forward to a Mardi Gras theme for Preschool Story Time on Friday, February 19.

Fun Facts for Valentine's Day
Arts and Entertainment: 'Little Women' to open next week at the Lodge
Next Friday, Canyon Lake Community Theatre will open its production of “Little Women.” Performances are scheduled for February 19, at 7 p.m., Saturday, February 20, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, February 21, at 3 p.m. Tickets are now available. Ticket prices are $15 for preferred seating, $12 for general seating, $10 for seniors 65 and over and $8 for children 12 and under. To purchase tickets, call 403-0639. Tickets also are available at the POA office – checks only.

Teen Talk: Being single on February 14 no cause for despair
The “I Love My Boyfriend,” shirts are not uncommon, especially around this time of year. Which is why I was glad, almost relieved to see a girl across the street with a shirt that said “Single and Not Looking.”
Letter: Mail being stolen
I am writing this letter to share with the community of Canyon Lake that mail is being stolen from our mailboxes. The criminal or criminals retrieve your mail from the open drop slot. The information is being used to print fraudulent checks with your checking account number and route number.

I would like to alert my neighbors that there has been theft from the cluster mailboxes in Canyon Lake. The mail is being taken from the outgoing slots in the cluster boxes.

I find it interesting that the people opposing Dave Lindeman have been working silently behind the scenes for two years. Instead of doing the right thing and sharing their concerns with everyone, including Dave, they chose to slander him behind his back and continue to do so.

The decision by the POA to send contracts out to bid, affecting the lives and livelihoods of dedicated employees of the Canyon Lake community is nothing short of disgusting and immoral.

Re: the Tuesday Board meeting and renewal of the Golf Pro’s contract, once again the Board of Directors decided against the majority.
In Memoriam: Jules Wesselink
Memorial services will be held tomorrow, February 13, for Jules Wesselink, a long-time Canyon Lake resident who died February 2 after a lengthy illness.
In Memoriam: Neil Hughes
Neil Parvin Hughes, 76, died February 4, 2010. A longtime former resident and Canyon Lake POA Board member, Neil was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, on March 5, 1933 to Darius and Minnie.
In Memoriam: Robert "Bob" Fuess
Robert “Bob” Fuess, 77, passed away on February 8 following a long illness.
In Memoriam: Carl Armbrust
Canyon Lake lost one of its most influential citizens last Tuesday with the death of Carl Armbrust.

It's time to determine eligibility for voting
Canyon Lake Property Owners are reminded they have until Friday, March 18, to clear their accounts, pay off fines and catch up on their POA dues if they want to vote for new Directors at the General Meeting in May. Only “Members in Good Standing” will be allowed to vote.
Cooks aim to please at the Country Club
Meet Joe Scanio, the kitchen supervisor at the Country Club, and his line cook, Mike Simpson. Joe began working in the Country Club kitchen in the summer of 2002; Mike started working here just three months ago. This dynamic duo works hard to prepare a variety of delectable dishes that will please all palates at reasonable prices.
Residents invited to serve on ad hoc committees
At the POA Board meeting on February 2, Directors authorized the establishment of two executive ad hoc committees that will provide information and guidance to the Board as it prepares a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the contracts of POA Legal Counsel and the POA Tennis Pro.
Series of dog-training classes to begin at Eastport Park
The duo of Allison McDorman and Cindy Chaisson of Custom Canine Training will be running a five-week group dog-training course at Eastport Park, beginning tomorrow, February 13, at noon.
Quagga risk assessment available for residents' review
Canyon Lake residents soon will hear from the Board of Directors on a proposed inspection program for boats entering the community. This is in response to studies and recommendations made over the past couple of years regarding the potential for quagga mussel infiltration in Canyon Lake.
Update records to avoid membership expiration
Did you know that Member Services is updating records? Many memberships have expired, so the Member Services Department is asking owners/prime members to update their records to continue or remove those expired memberships.
Bereavement support group to begin next week
Ramona Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, a leader in home health and hospice care for Southwest Riverside County, will facilitate a new five-week bereavement support group to serve the residents of Canyon Lake, beginning Wednesday, February 17, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Towne Center Conference Room.
TWG toils away
While awaiting a new Golf Course Master Plan that will give them direction on major projects they can tackle on the Golf Course, volunteers from the Tuesday Work Group (TWG) continue to plug away at the beautification of the course.
