Snowbound

Snowy scenes like this won’t be around too much longer, as winter begins to give way to spring in the days ahead. Fortunately for Canyon Lakers, the foreground pretty much remains the same all year round – beautiful! This scene was snapped by Colleen Smith. |

This Week's Official CLPOA News
Candidates announced for 2010 POA election
Five residents have announced their candidacy for the POA Board of Directors as of the 3 p.m. deadline on February 26. In alphabetical order they are Paul Chenette, George Irvine, Sean McDonald, Lawrence Neigel and Charles Newsom. They will run for three available seats in the 2010 election, including the seat of former President Randy Bonner who resigned on February 19.
POA President resigns
Canyon Lakers were stunned over the weekend to discover that Randy Bonner had resigned as POA President, spurring rumors of a health problem and a reaction to a letter in last week’s issue of The Friday Flyer that Randy’s commitment to transparency had not included disclosure of an alleged $100,000 audit of POA staff.
What's up this weekend
It’s hard to beat a leisurely day by the lake in February, especially if the sun is shining and temperatures are in the 70s, as they were last week when this picture was taken at Sunset Beach. But residents looking for something else to do with their time this Saturday should check out these three community events sponsored by Canyon Lake clubs tomorrow, February 27.

City Connection: City to consider emergency medical services fee
A preliminary agenda for the next City Council meeting on Wednesday, March 3, includes a recommendation by the Finance Committee to conduct a Fee Study for an Emergency Medical Services Prescription Program in Canyon Lake. The subscription service offers residents a low-cost alternative to direct billing for Fire Department emergency medical services
City Connection: ABC holds hearing on Marty Gibson/Pepe's case
An administrative hearing was held February 17 by the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to discuss the “Men of Magic” show held at Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant last year. Proprietor Marty Gibson decided last fall to bring the “Chippendales” type show to Pepe’s to increase revenue as well as provide entertainment for the community.
City Connection: Are you caught holding the bag?
Are you a good dog owner? Do you help to protect Canyon Lake by picking up and properly disposing of your dogÕs feces?Ê Did you know animal waste can be a contributor to storm water and Lake pollution? It contains disease-carrying bacteria and toxins that can increase the risk of viral infections, flu and skin rashes for swimmers. Pet waste also contains nutrients that can promote algae growth and fish kills when washed by storm water into the Lake.

Residents warned of mail theft, check fraud
Corporal Ole Williams of the Canyon Lake Police Department reports an increase in check fraud stemming from mail theft within the gates. He says all deputies have at least one reported theft they are working on but he could not confirm the number of suspects involved. As many as seven Canyon Lake residents have reported up to 12 incidents of check fraud in recent months.
Residents prepare to build cable skiing park
Two longtime Canyon Lake residents, Trevor Sudweeks and John Clemmons, announce construction is scheduled to begin at Santee Lakes on a water skiing venue known as a cable board park.
CFC's reopening could be a month away
With scaffolding surrounding its façade, Canyon Fitness Center (CFC) on Railroad Canyon Rd. is in the final stages of rebuilding after the fire and water damage that destroyed the west wing of the building in November 2008.
Residents find fulfillment as sanctuary volunteers
Touched by a TV news report last December, Canyon Lakers Van and Natalie Robinson have discovered a newfound passion for helping animals. More than 125 animals, such as a Palomino pony rescued from a dark, damp closet, dying of starvation, and a deer tied by its horns and dragged by a car, are just a few of the animals that have been rescued and cared for by volunteers like the Robinsons at the Meadowbrook Animal Sanctuary and Haven (MASH) off Highway 74 in Lake Elsinore.

Arts and Entertainment: Salute to Cole Porter
Residents are invited to hear the music of composer-songwriter Cole Porter, presented by the Temescal Canyon Spotlight Players, along with special guests and alumni, on Saturday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at the Lodge. The event is a fundraiser for the TCHS spring musical, "Peter Pan." The program will feature pianists, flute solos, lyrical and tap numbers, as well as vocalists. Admission is $12 for adults and $8 for students.
Movie Review: 'Shutter Island'
Master Director Martin Scorcese takes gothic thrillers to a new level on “Shutter Island.” Generously borrowing clichés from prior horror flicks is a tribute to the genre. Scorcese then embellishes and assembles them into a much more intelligent creep-fest. The result is a modern classic and possibly one of the best B-movies ever made.
Day Tripping with Mary: Santa Rosa Plateau is a local hidden gem
I had forgotten what a hidden treasure the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve is to this area. Located at 39400 Clinton Keith Rd. in Murrieta, the Reserve is about a 20-minute drive from Canyon Lake, and home to 40 miles of hiking trails, vernal pools, wildlife and rare plants.
Betsy's Best Bets: Facing phobia leads to life saving donations
For years, when I thought about donating blood, I would flash back to an image of a friend in high school passing out cold on the gym floor after she donated. Add to that a lifelong fear of needles, and I was pretty sure that 'blood donor' was not going to be on my resume any time soon.
Cook's Corner: Eat local Farmers Market produce 'slow'ly
Long tables loaded with colorful vegetables like broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, radishes and beets. And more table lengths with mounds of Meyer lemons, blood oranges and Oro Blanco grapefruit. Is this a mid-winter day’s dream? Hardly! It is the scene that welcomed me as I visited the Canyon Lake Farmer’s Market this past Sunday.
Canyon Lake Ink: Woman's tattoo art holds spiritual significance
For one Canyon Lake woman, tattoos go beyond the fun and whimsical to become representations of deep-seated beliefs and spirituality. Andrea Bossenmeyer currently has five tattoos, and each was carefully selected and designed.
Letter: Bidding process
In looking back over my old The Friday Flyers from 1993 to the present, I see we are having the same problems based on poor decisions made now as in the past 17 years. Could it be because we have had many, if not all, of the same contract players for that many years?
Letter: Never been a quitter
First, I would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of member support from Canyon Lake who appreciate an active, involved President and CEO – and it seems to be increasing daily.
Letter: Bonner's resignation
Last Friday was a sad day for Canyon Lake. A very good man had enough, and decided to turn in his resignation. As most of you know by now, Randy Bonner quit his elected position as POA President.
Letter: Making a difference
I would like to extend a “thank you” to Barbara and Chris Dinelli of the IHOP Restaurant on Newport Rd. in Menifee. On February 13 and 14, they allowed our team to set up in front of their store to sell Valentine goodies to their patrons. It was a fundraiser for our team for the ACS Relay For Life (Team Zebra).
Letter: PGA pro
I have known Mr. Dave Lindeman for over 25 years. He is one of the most outstanding and caring young men I have ever known. I personally cut his and his family’s hair for almost 20 years before I had to retire. Hairdressers know their clients closer than just about anyone.
Letter: City manager contract
These are difficult economic times for our country, state, county and city. Every municipality is looking for ways to save money. The City of Canyon Lake has an opportunity ahead of us. The contract for our city manager will be up for renewal very shortly.
Letter: Candidates needed
It is a shame that Randy Bonner felt compelled to resign from the POA Board of Directors and as President for personal reasons. It is difficult in this community of 4,800 residences to find candidates to run for the POA Board. It is not difficult to find many voices and signatures in opposition to Board issues – the setback rule and going out to contract as two recent examples.
Letter: Emergency medical services
The City Council’s agenda for Wednesday includes a proposal to hire a firm to study the feasibility of charging for paramedical services.

ACCording to the ACC...
Canyon Lake is a little ahead of the calendar when it comes to the old saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” But since there have been February showers, there certainly are the weeds and greenery that typically come with rain. There has been just enough rain to make the hills come alive with new growth and that also means new, and sometimes unwanted growth in yards.

POA Notes: Roadwork recommendations
The Facility Review Committee has reviewed the bids for repaving Vacation Dr. and Canyon Lake Dr. South and have recommended to the Board to use the paving company, Cooley, which had the lowest bid, according to Facilities Review Committee Chair Vito Rasso, who says the paving will include adding an additional one-inch layer of asphalt from Blue Bird Dr. to Railroad Canyon Rd.
