Stand up and be counted in 2010
Yard signs are going up, banners are being hoisted and announcements are being made at public meetings and community events as part of a comprehensive effort in the City of Canyon Lake to let residents know it is important they be counted in the 2010 Census.

Seniors in Riverside County should participate in the U.S. Census but beware of people who might use the once-a-decade survey to commit fraud, Riverside County officials warn.

Canyon Lake Little League President Alex Cook estimates more than 900 parents and kids showed up for last Saturday’s opening day ceremonies at Gault Field. “It was probably the best opening day most have experienced in Canyon Lake,” he says.

City Connection: Hats off to cats
A cat in a hat and a tall cat were the center of attention at last week’s story times at the Library. Tomorrow, March 13, kids are invited to a drawing class at the Library, hosted by Jerry Bates. The class will be offered from 11 a.m. to noon.

City Connection: Writing Workshop
The Canyon Lake Library will present a Family Legacy Writing Workshop led by Linda Weaver Clarke on Monday, March 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. This event is free to the public.

Chamber awardees are announced
The Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate the following individuals and organizations for being named annual award recipients and to thank them for their service on behalf of the community. Today, March 12 is the last day to make reservations for the annual Chamber of Commerce Awards and Installation Dinner on Friday, March 19, at the Diamond Club in Lake Elsinore. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are $40; call Chamber Director Lee Clark at 244-6124.

Chamber awardees - Organization of the Year
Mommy and Me was selected as this year's Chamber of Commerce Organization of the Year for being what sponsors describe as "a great way for mothers and their children to meet other families in the community in a structured, loving and nurturing setting" . . . that sometimes includes snakes!

Hankering to go hiking?
The north side of Canyon Lake has three locked gates for which Members in Good Standing can get keys to access trails in the Bureau of Land Management area, according to Member Services Administrator Kathie Barnes.

Singer-songwriter, Lindsey “Lincélie” Christian will be performing with other artists of “The Girls Against Abuse” at a CD pre-release party tomorrow, March 13, at 8:30 p.m. at The Mercantile in Old Town Temecula (next to the Old Town Temecula Community Theater on Main St.)

It is only a matter of time until someone golfing on the 13th hole is seriously injured or killed. People hitting drives longer than 170 yards cannot be seen from the tee box.

Letter: Chuck has my vote
My wife and I bought a home within Canyon Lake back in 1991 and have spent most of our time within the golfing community. I was given the names of the candidates for the upcoming POA election and only knew one. Chuck Newsom had applied for one of the two openings. I know Chuck as highly organized and find him also focused on the good for our community.

Skip from the East Bay felt it necessary to leave a nasty voicemail on one of the Bassmaster member’s machines where he proceeded to badmouth the club for having a tournament when the fish were getting ready to spawn.

I thought my job would always be secure when I started Nettles Family Childcare 13 years ago. Well, now so many people are out of work there is little need for daycare. I usually have six to eight full-time children, but now have only three part-time and am on the verge of losing everything.

Club News: Motorcycle Club
Motorcycle Club members braved the elements on February 27 to collect pet food, animal supplies and financial support totaling $819.31, which was donated to Animal Friends of the Valleys in Lake Elsinore.

Club News: Bassmasters Tournament
The Bassmasters held a tournament on March 6 with 11 boats and 20 fishermen participating. In all, 51 fish were caught that weighed a total of 136.01 lbs.

Club News: Tennis Club
The Canyon Lake Tennis Club's March Doubles Mixer tournament was held Saturday, March 6.

Meet the POA Board candidates
Five men will be vying for two positions on the Property Owners Association Board of Directors when the Canyon Lake POA holds its Annual Meeting and Election on May 18. The following introductions to candidates were taken from the resumes they filed with the Association on February 26. They are listed in the order they will appear on the ballot as determined by an official lottery.

It's time to determine eligibility for voting
Canyon Lake Property Owners are reminded they have until Thursday, March 18, to clear their accounts, pay off fines and catch up on their POA dues if they want to vote for new Directors at the General Meeting in May. Only “Members in Good Standing” will be allowed to vote.

Boat inspection program for quagga proposed
The Lake and Marina Committee has made a recommendation to move forward with implementation of a boat inspection program to help prevent quagga mussels from entering Canyon Lake. The program was presented as a 1st Reading at the March 2 Board meeting and residents have until April 6 to comment.

Longhorn Dr. paving is two-thirds complete
Longsuffering Longhorn Dr. residents are continuing to see progress in front of their homes as International Pavement Solutions’ big equipment finishes the second stretch of pavement in Phase 2 of the Road Project this week.

Members sought for ad hoc golf RFP committee
Members are sought to serve on the Ad Hoc Executive Golf Professional Proposal Review Committee in order to review and evaluate proposals received by the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association in response to Request for Proposals (RFP) for golf professional services.

Country Club: Experience luck o' the Irish Wednesday

Sponsors sought for 'Country Faire' Fiesta Day
“Country Faire” will be the theme of the annual Fiesta Day on May 29. Pastor Pete Van Dyke of Canyon Lake Community Church will be the grand marshal of the parade and the Silverados will provide music for festivities at the Lodge. In keeping with the theme, there will be a number of traditional country fair contests, such as an Apple Pie Baking Contest. Booth and parade applications will be available April 1.

Stop by Equestrian Center tomorrow
After getting rained out on February 27, the Canyon Lake Equestrian Club would like to invite the community to view or participate in Play Day at the Equestrian Center tomorrow, March 13, at 9 a.m.

Are you or someone you know moving? Arguably the hardest part of moving is tackling the garage and some of the interior, over-used closets. That’s the time many folks start thinking it’s time to order a dumpster or a POD to get oneself cleaned up and organized. Most of these containers are easily stored on the driveway or member’s property.

Seniors heap praise on one of their own
The members of the Senior Dancercise class that meets on Thursdays at the Senior Center treated their leader, Daryl Schwarz, to breakfast and gifts at the Country Club on February 25 in appreciation of her “excellent and tireless leadership,” according to spokesperson Millie Petersen.
