Celebrating 20 years Mayor Nancy Horton invites residents to bring memorabilia from Canyon Lake's history to be displayed at City Hall in celebration of the City's 20th anniversary. The City officially turns 20 on December 1, 2010, but special events will be planned over the next several months. Residents can obtain a 20th anniversary pin at City Hall. Mail theft Due to recent mail thefts, residents are reminded not to use the outgoing mail slots in the cluster mailboxes. The safest way to protect outgoing mail is to take it directly to the post office. Anyone whose mail has been stolen from outgoing slots or whose cluster boxes have been broken into should report this crime to the police department at 246-2020. After calling police, theft also should be reported to the United States Local Postal Inspector at 877-876-2455, Option 5. According to Lt. Danny Feltenberger of the Canyon Lake Police Department, more than 20 cars were affected. Anyone with information should contact the Canyon Lake Police Department at 246-2020. Communication volunteers needed Retired Fire Chief Larry Greene of the Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee is looking for volunteers to operate two-way hand-held radios during a declared disaster. Their job will be to provide information about casualties, damaged buildings and infrastructure and injuries to a command post manned by key City officials and public safety personnel. Once trained, the volunteer radio operators would be assigned to the five areas designated in the city's Emergency Operations Plan. If they didn't already have a license, volunteers would be required to take a two-day course to become certified to operate the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES), an amateur radio service created by the Federal Communications Commission. Greene says the class, which is no cost to volunteers, teaches participants all about the communication laws and how to operate the radio. For more information, call Chief Greene at City Hall at 244-2955. Wanted: TIP volunteers Trauma Intervention Programs Inc. (TIP), a 501,C,(3) non-profit organization, is looking for men, women and teens to be part of a unique team of citizen volunteers trained to provide immediate emotional first aid and practical support to victims of traumatic events. No experience is necessary. TIP volunteers are called to emergency scenes by law enforcement, fire and hospital ER personnel in Canyon Lake and surrounding areas. An orientation and training class is scheduled for Thursday, April 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. The course consists of four additional weeknights from 6 to 9 p.m. two Saturdays and half of a Sunday. TIP volunteers are available to assist: • Family members and friends following a natural or unexpected death • Victims of crime, including rape, assault, robbery and burglary • Victims of fire • Persons involved in vehicle accidents • Family members of a person who had committed suicide For more information on helping with fund raising events, becoming a supporting member or becoming a TIP volunteer, call TIP at 698-2453. Emergency preparedness The City of Canyon Lake has a very active Emergency Preparedness Committee that helps coordinate the state, county and local regulations that will help keep the City functioning during a state of emergency. The City welcomes all residents’ involvement in this process. Training is available; meetings of the Emergency Preparedness Committee are held the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Blue Bird Hall. The next meeting is April 1. CodeRED notification The City of Canyon Lake has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System – a high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. This system allows City officials to telephone all or targeted areas of the City in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action. The City used the system during the recent storms to let residents know what roads were closed and where they could get help in the event of an emergency. Farmers’ Market Parents are invited to bring their kids to the Farmers’ Market to visit the Easter Bunny and have their pictures taken by vendor Photography by GZ. The Farmers’ Market now offers fresh, barbecued pulled pork, tri tip and chicken made by certified professional chef Mathew Mujica of Backyard Barbecue and Catering Company, a local who has been whipping up “Que” for more than 13 years, according to spokesperson Deirdre Darrow. She says Mathew offers “yummy sandwich plates and catering packages – it’s worth it to come over for a bite.” Another new food offering is a taco cart from Los Amigos Restaurant, with fresh tacos prepared to order for $1 each. In addition to other seasonal and specialty foods, the market currently has several charities serving coffee, donuts, smoothies and other goodies. Deirdre’s Pampered Chef booth is hosting a fundraiser for Sea Scouts 39 of Wildomar. Sea Scouts is an offshoot of Boy Scouts, with a focus on water activities. Deirde is donating 20 percent of her Pampered Chef sales to the Sea Scouts. There also is a “Tool Pool,” where the Sea Scouts get half the pool money and the winner can win up to $100 in Pampered Chef products. New 511 service A new “Inland Empire 511” service to assist commuters and motorists is live and available to the public, thanks to the efforts of the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), in partnership with San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG). By calling 511 from any phone in Riverside and San Bernardino County, or by visiting www.ie511.org on the web, users can now get all of the information they need to plan a trip, avoid congestion and increase their mobility no matter where they are going in Southern California. The website is fully functional. Freeway signs advising motorists of the service are currently being installed and the telephone service is in the last phases of implementing 511. Callers using Verizon land and cellular phones; Sprint, T-mobile and AT&T cell phones; and Time Warner and Charter cable telephone service simply need to dial 511 to access the interactive voice recognition system for this free informational service. Callers using AT&T landlines will have to use the longer 1-877-MYIE511 number until April 2010 while AT&T completes its conversion activities to make the shortcut available. Pools at vacant homes Neighbors who notice that a home has been vacated and the pool has become stagnant and green should call City Hall. Staff will have the problem evaluated and begin the mitigation process. Disposal of bulky items Items that cannot fit in trash containers, such as a chair or a couch, are considered “bulky items.” A bulky item is an object that can be handled by a two-person crew and may include washers, dryers or other large materials. Each residential customer is entitled to two bulky item pick-ups free of charge per calendar year. Additional bulky item pick-ups will be provided for a nominal charge. To make arrangements for a bulky item pick-up on one’s regular waste collection day, call CR&R at 943-1991. Prescription discount card The National League of Cities and the City of Canyon Lake have a program to help residents save money on prescription medicines not covered by insurance. The City of Canyon Lake Prescription Discount Card is available to all City residents free of charge and can help save an average of 20 percent off the price of commonly prescribed medications at participating pharmacies. Canyon Lake residents can pick up a discount card at City Hall. Disaster handbook available In conjunction with the Emergency Preparedness Committee, the City of Canyon Lake offers a handbook to help families develop an emergency plan in the case of earthquake or other natural or manmade disasters. The handbook provides valuable tips on what to expect and what to plan during specific types of events, and includes checklists, handy fill-in forms and questionnaires that take families step-by-step through the process of preparing an emergency plan. Residents can pick up a handbook at City Hall. Passport services City Hall has all the forms needed to renew or apply for a U.S. passport. In addition, applications are available for a passport card that is less expensive and can be used for travel by land from Mexico, Canada, Bermuda and the Caribbean. Forms that are filled out and printed from the website, www.travel.state.com, also can be brought in for official processing. The City charges a $25 execution fee to process passport applications, the cost of which varies from $10 to $75, based on the applicant’s age and type of passport (book or card). City FAQ The City of Canyon Lake website, www.cityofcanyonlake.com, is a helpful source of information regarding services the City offers. Department hours and contact information is listed for City Council, City Manager, City Clerk, Building and Safety, Planning, Engineering, Finance, Fire and Police. Forms and applications are available to print for business license application, special events permit and Multi-purpose Room application. A link called “New to Town” provides names, addresses and phone numbers for animal control, utilities, library, post office services, transportation, the school district, hospitals, emergency services and lawmakers. There also are links to the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association, Chamber of Commerce and CR&R Waste Recycling Services. For further information, call City Hall at 244-2955. County office closures Residents are reminded that many Riverside County offices are now closed on Fridays while others have new, shorter hours. County closures will not affect public safety services, some health services and other 24-hour operations or the operating hours of county parks. Various health services, document recording offices and other important county functions will be available in some locations on weekdays when other county offices are closed. Residents who need to do business with the county are encouraged to go online and visit www.check-here-first.com ahead of time to verify whether the county office they plan to visit is open. The website offers a searchable database to help determine which days county buildings are closed due to furloughs and provides the hours and locations where some services are available when other offices are not open. Schedules can be searched using a department name, address, service and other keywords. Those without computer access can dial 211, the Riverside County call center, to obtain closure information or ask questions regarding the closures. City Council meeting The City Council meets on the first Wednesday of the month in the Council Chamber of the POA building. The next meeting is April 7. The 6:30 p.m. meeting is broadcast live on Time Warner Channel 29 and Verizon Channel 39. |
