If residents receive a census questionnaire with the wrong address, here’s what they should do:
Pool opens for first weekend of spring
Just in time for the first day of spring and the warm weather expected this weekend, the Pool is open and ready for sunbathing and splashing good fun. After being closed since mid-December, the covering recently was rolled back and the Pool cleaned in time for lap swimming and water aerobics classes that began last Monday.
Big Band Bash
Residents can escape to the swing era of the 1940s tomorrow, March 20, when the Canyon Lake Fine Arts Guild presents Kevin Mayse and his Big Band at 7 p.m. at the Lodge.
Detour at East Gate likely to begin next month
The R.J. Noble Company has been contracted by the County of Riverside to complete Phase 1 construction work on Newport Rd. and open the new six-lane roadway by June. The work was scheduled to begin on March 8 but residents just now are beginning to see the big equipment roll in and traffic signs posted.

City Connection: City honors firefighters who went to Haiti
Two Canyon Lakers know well the death and destruction that can be wrought by earthquakes. As members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue California Task Force 2 (CA-TF2), Paramedic Lewis Francescon and Fire Captain Ron Horetski train regularly for the task of saving lives following major earthquakes such as those in Haiti and Chile.
City Connection: Report dead birds on West Nile Virus hotline
The California Department of Public Health has begun a new season of testing dead birds for West Nile virus, according to Doug Osborn, supervisor for Riverside County’s Vector Control Program. Residents who find a dead bird are urged to call the West Nile virus phone line at 1-877-968-BIRD (2473) between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. The public can report dead birds 24 hours a day at www.westnile.ca.gov or www.bcmvcd.com.
City Connection: Shred Days tomorrow, next Saturday
The Library will host a Shred Day tomorrow, March 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as a way to dispose of old tax documents and confidential papers. The cost is $2 per storage box; proceeds will benefit Friends of the Canyon Lake Library.

Take steps to prepare for a big earthquake
Recently, a viral e-mail that was not authorized by Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department circulated regarding the possibility of an impending major earthquake, according to Fire Captain and Public Information Officer Fernando Herrera, who says the unauthorized e-mail has been widely forwarded and posted on blogs and other social media sites. This has raised major questions for citizens of Southern California.
Honor roll team brings cheer to community
The cheerleaders from CLMS frequently take time out of their busy schedules for community projects, such as sending dozens of cards to the troops in Afghanistan over the holidays and collecting clothing for local families.

'Ashley's Closet' sales to go toward scholarships
Are old prom dresses, cocktail gowns and bridesmaid dresses taking up valuable space? Canyon Lake resident Luann Strech would like to invite residents to clear their closets of the clutter and help a good cause by donating gently used formal gowns to “Ashley’s Closet,” a fundraiser to benefit the Ashley Megan Bucklin Memorial Scholarship fund.
Passing of NFL star brings back memories
The passing of NFL football Hall of Famer Merlin Olsen last week brought memories to Dr. Vick Knight, Canyon Lake author and school board member. In 1975, Vick had recently had two books published by the Ward Ritchie Press in Los Angeles, and Mr. Olsen had obtained a copy of one of them, “The Night the Crayons Talked.” He called Vick and complimented the author of the story, one combining a theme of tolerance and water conservation. The Rams star wanted to know if he could help promote the book, since his children enjoyed it.

Finally, a war movie with shooting, bombings, chase scenes and war-like action that we’ve come to know and love in real war movies! Paul Greengrass, who directed the last two Bourne features, treats Matt Damon as if he is Bourne again. “Green Zone” is a lot like “Hurt Locker,” except without the psycho-babble; oh, and it’s actually entertaining.

Cook's Corner: Fill up on yeast-free foods for Passover
Several years ago my family attended our first Passover Seder at our friends’ home. Being novices at the Seder sequence of events, my husband and I realized much too late that the traditional four glasses of wine imbibed during the Seder needn’t be full glasses. Our first Passover was renamed the Pass-out. Since then, we’ve become more Seder savvy and now opt for smaller glasses, filled only one-quarter full each time.

Announcement: Top academic achievers honored
Two Canyon Lake students, Erik Larson and Francesca Zuccola, were among the 131 Riverside County student nominees for the 2009-2010 All-County Academic Team. They attend Temescal Canyon High School and were nominated by Principal Errol Garnett.
Announcement: Soccer champ named MVP
Marissa Everett and her Arsenal FC soccer club team recently won the Cal South National Cup and will represent Southern California in the Far West Regionals in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on June 21 to 27. Marissa, 12, is the daughter of Don and Amy Everett and a 7th grader at Canyon Lake Middle School.

Poodle skirts, jeans, white T-shirts and “Dad’s dress shirts” brought back fond memories on March 5 when the Lodge was transformed into a 1950s High School gym for the Travel Club’s Sock Hop.

Thirty-six couples came away winners and there were nine skins winners in the Women’s Golf Club “Luck of the Irish” Jack and Jill tournament on March 13.

Candidate withdraws
George Irvine, a previously announced candidate for one of two seats on the POA Board of Directors, announced his withdrawal from candidacy in a written statement to the POA on March 12. George did not announce the reason for his withdrawal.
Annual meeting, election calendar
Vendors, sponsors wanted for Fiesta Days
“Country Faire” will be the theme of the annual Fiesta Day on May 29. Pastor Pete Van Dyke of Canyon Lake Community Church will be the grand marshal of the parade, “American Idol” contestant Tori Kelly will sing the National Anthem and the Silverados will provide music for festivities at the Lodge.
Computer classes
The POA is offering a new schedule of computer classes that begin next month. Register at the Member Services desk, making checks payable to the Senior Committee.
Calling all able-bodied men for work and fun
When trees fall on the Golf Course from weather-related causes, “someone has to clean up the mess,” according to Rolly Bittermann, spokesperson for the all-volunteer 58-member Tuesday Work Group that takes upon itself many such tasks.

The POA is offering a Horse Camp for kids ages 6 and above, beginning Monday, March 29. Sessions are four consecutive days, Monday through Thursday, from 9 to 11 a.m.; the cost is $100 per child.

Leaping leprechauns!
YMCA kids celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday with leprechaun crafts and snacks. Next week the preschoolers will have an Easter egg hunt on Tuesday, March 23, and make Easter crafts.
Boat inspection program for quagga proposed
The Lake and Marina Committee has made a recommendation to move forward with implementation of a boat inspection program to help prevent quagga mussels from entering Canyon Lake. The program was presented as a 1st Reading at the March 2 Board meeting and residents have until April 6 to comment.
Keys to BLM land
The north side of Canyon Lake has three locked gates for which Members in Good Standing can get keys to access trails in the Bureau of Land Management area, according to Member Services Administrator Kathie Barnes.
