Skipper's birds

The pastel shades of sun-dappled hills contrast sharply with a gloomy foreground, as this flock of black cormorants covers Skipper's Island. Dave Guthery caught this Hitchcock-like scene during the recent storms. Look for more scenes of Canyon Lake's waterfowl in this issue.

Movie Review: Academy Awards: and the winner is?
What a great year for movies! We saw blockbuster prequels/sequels: “Harry Potter,” “Twilight,” “X-Men,” “Transformers” and “Star Trek.” Michael Jackson declared, “This is It!” Roland Emmerich devastated our planet in “2012,” Sandra Bullock extended an unusual “Proposal” and the grunge celebrated “The Hangover.” This Sunday night, the Academy will select its favorites. We might not agree, but here are our predictions:

Betsy's Best Bets: Reaping the benefits and rewards of home parties
I am such a sucker for home parties. I know people who groan and roll their eyes when they are invited to a home cooking show or a candle party. Not me! I enjoy the fun of the party almost as much as the shopping opportunities themselves. Plus, I know I am helping a friend make a sale or earn free products when I make a purchase. There are usually games and give-aways, and there is sure to be good food, especially at the kitchenware parties!
